Stop ganging up on Japanese, we only got two of 'em here and I appreciate the diversity of the site .

That said one would think that recent efforts of Japan to become more militarily independent would be backed by a more independent foreign policy, perhaps Japan considers USA to be central to its defense doctrine in future (which runs contrary to how many of us understood it). Also it appears that they are underestimating the reaction of Russia in this case.

You failed to recognize the strategy, @senheiser . Despite Putin's proposed "Hajime" of Japanese and Russian relations , it would have been centered on our bilateral trade, which was centered on energy sales -- which reached $38 Billion this year. Come now, do you honestly think that Russia would have given southern Sakhalin Island to Japan? lol.

That southern tip was taken by Japan after the Russo-Japanese War of 1905, which was given back after Japan's surrender terms to the Allied Powers in 1945. The Russian side would have never given southern Sakhalin Island even if bilateral trade would have reached $100 billion per annum.

Why would Russia give back southern Sakhalin to Japan when that was the very source of national travesty after Russia was defeated by Imperial Japan in 1905? Does the Battle of Tsushima Straits and The annihilation of the Russian Baltic Fleet, the cream of the Imperial Russian Navy, ring a bell?

I find it funny when some russian and chinese members here say Russia could/would have ceeded the kuril/sakhalin islands back to Japan at some point if there was no Ukraine crisis or issues between the two countries. This is laughable. Its just like saying Japan will give back the senkakus to china/taiwan. of course this will never happen, well at least not without a bloddy fight.

Russia never had any intention of giving back any islands to Japan, in fact Russia and Japan still havent signed a peace treaty despite world war II ending decades ago. So its not like Japan has anything to lose siding with the U.S(Its main ally/patron), Russia offers Japan nothing concrete really, apart from supplying Gas/oil(which Japan pays for), Russia and Japan interests simply dont match, Japan is still a developed country and firmly entrenched in the western/U.S camp, its interests are very well served siding with the U.S for the time being/years to come.

This is not to say Japan will cut off all ties with Russia, no they wont, they will still keep trading with each other, after all China and Japan being much more bitter ennemies have an even larger trade with each other than any country in this region.lol
So japan will maintain its trade with Russia, albeit maybe it might slow down abit, but it wont change drastically. Since Russia still needs customers for its natural resources, thats the only thing Russia can offer Japan IMO, Russia produces nothing that Japan cant produce/have apart from oil.lol just being honest.

Afterall, these islands were also seized by Japan when Japan crushed Russia so called 'mighty Navy' during the 1905 war. Very few people even know/remember this. So this island issue is more than meets the eye. there's also some history/emotional sentiment in it.

Im also surprised to see some Indians here badmouthing Japan because of Japan sanctioning Russia. India should first decide which camp to which its belong, it doesnt even have a clear foreign policy. So far, its the only main big country/power who doesnt have a clear stand on major issues in the world when it affects its former cold war patron Russia and the west/U.S., it doesnt even know which place it wants for itself in this world unlike Russia and China whose main aim/objectives are to reduce/kick out western 'imperialism' and influence in their repsective spehere of inluence i.e eastern europe and Asia . India sometimes seems to be contended dancing with the West/U.S one day and Russia/China the other day.lool India can still afford to do this, but in a decade or two from now, im afraid it wont be able to play all sides without being in one camp when it comes to critical issues affecting the west/US and RUssia/China. So india should first get its own house in order before criticizing Japan stance on sanctioning Russia(which i think is correct).

Japan recently concluded an energy pact with Papau New Guinea on Natural Gas and Petro, just this year. So if there will be disruptions in Russian sales, Japan can offset that with imports from PNG, as well as increased imports from the United States (the world's #1 largest producer of NG).

im Goodmy friend Nihonji, just been busy with some familly issues and work lately, but all good. I have been browsing on and off once in a while on here as well. But only comment when need be, though there are some pretty arrogant/rude member, i tend to avoid arguments/namecalling, i got more to do than wasting my time arguing with some arrogant people i know are biased/will never change their stand no matter what(there are many of them on here) lool . Reason why i dont comment alot on many issues here, or when i do, i just try and make my point and dissapear if the repsponse i get is insulting/name calling. the best answer to give to an arrogant person is Ignore.

As for the topic, yes Japan has really nothing to loose as i said with Russia, apart from natural resources i.e Oil and gas. Russia produces/offers nothing much to Japan that Japan needs/cant produce. At least authoritarian China, South Korea, Taiwan, etc have electronics, textile, affordable/cheap labour and supply chain for industries, large demand/market(in terms of China), etc. Russia merely relies on its Soviet era weapons/defence industry and oil to survive. And japan doesnt need any russian soviet era weapons, since it has way more better quality access to western/U.S weapons.
In short as i said Russia interests doesnt really match with that of Japan as of now/near term, Japan simply has way way more to gain by allying/remaining firmly entrneched in U.S/western camp.

MOSCOW, July 28 (RIA Novosti) – Japan is expected to release a list of individuals and companies, against which sanctions will be imposed over the crisis in Ukraine, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Monday at a press conference.

“Given the situation in Ukraine, we introduce new sanctions. Firstly, the assets of people involved in Crimea annexation and responsible for destabilizing the situation in Ukraine will be frozen. Secondly, our country will implement its new projects in Russia in accordance with the policy of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, as the European Union does. Thirdly, since Japan does not acknowledge Crimea as part of Russia, there will be limitations on the goods imported from Crimea,” Suga said.

Suga added that all formalities to implement these measures would be settled shortly. The sanctions that Japan is planning to impose had been approved by Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe prior to his trip to South America.

After the Malaysia Airlines plane crash in Ukraine, the United States and the EU members began considering tougher sanctions against Russia.

Japan said it was important to make this step together with other members of G7, which is why the announcement of the sanctions came four days later then they were approved by the prime minister.

Up until recently Japan’s position concerning Russia was far from stern, and there was a positive dynamic in Japan-Russia relations.

Earlier on, the majority of the directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development said it was not possible to make new investments in Russia in the nearest future.

It seems to me that Japan and Russia would be better of cooperating rather than playing the sanctions game. They have the Kuriles islands issue to deal with, where the russians already said that they are willing to go for a 50% split and both of them have a geopolitical interest in cooperating with each other in order to check and balance china. The russians have been trying to get closer to Japan in the last few years. Sanctions will play against that and in the end is an strategic mistake for Japan's interest in my opinion.

Lool japan is a bankrupt country/ economy? Lool.
Japan is still the worlds 3rd largest economy (more than twice russsia size, despite having virtually no natural resources, unlike Russia and even China). In fact it wasnt until 2010 that china overtook japan, despite being almost 10 times more populous than japan, china is still just about twice the size of Japan. Lol it should be at least 5 times biggertthan japan if it was at least half as productive as japan.
Japan is still bigger than any european power economically: france, germany, russia, U.K . Its just that they were in the wrong side of history during wirld war II, if noy believe me japan would have way more say in the world than it does today. Same with Germany.
So your talk of japan as a finished great power/bankrupt cpuntry is premature. China will need to keep growing at its past rate for at least 45 years or more to even dream of reaching japanese living standard. As I always said dont make fun of a country who is still ahead of you.
