Japan-Russia islands dispute: fears tensions are dragging in US and China as jets scramble

nah Russia isn't going to use nukes on Japan. Japan has humiliated Russia in the past I wouldn't rule them out. Given sufficient motivation, time to plan and execute an offensive campaign Japan is capable of defeating the Russians near her homeland. But then I don't think Japan is looking for a fight. Not sure why Russia is ratcheting tensions, may be Putin is just bored.
Wow humiliate Russia? They took kurils and didn't gave a fck about it. What is Japan gonna do? Cry?

what you think doesn't matter though. what they actually said does. and what russia said is that they WILL use nukes in a conventional war if it threatens russian lands. and they DO consider the kurils to be russian right now.

and sure if you give japan all the advantage in the world, time to plan without russia finding out, be more motivated to attack than the russian are to defend. then sure japan can take the islands right before Tokyo gets flattened by a few multi-megaton warheads.

in the real world, a japanese build up will trigger not only a russian counter build up but also a chinese buildup and even a korean build up.

and it also seems like you cant stop jerking off to the one japanese victory over tzarist russia. catch up with the times. that was over 100 years ago and we have more recent examples of the soviets absolutely trashing the japanese. or did you forget how the kurils ended up in russian hands right now?

Kurils are highly strategic. Russia has been investing heavily on Kunashir and Iturup lately and moving more people there from the mainland. If Japan invades, it'll be Falklands War 2.0

A senior Russian official once told me the importance of all things can be gauged by its distance from Moscow. This includes officials and their postings throughout Russia. The Russians aren't going to nuke Japan over some remote island no matter how hard you wish it..

I'm sorry, but you're not arguing against me. you are arguing against russia's own declared policy on nuclear use. a single unnamed "senior russian official" does overrule declared policy.

plus, i too don't think nuke will be needed. but not because russia won't use them, but because Japan cant conquer the kurils right now anyhow.

Japan, opposing 3 neighbors on all fronts.
It's bad strategy.

It is unlikely Russians will use nukes but if Japan manages to overwhelm Russian conventional military then Russia will have no choice but to nuke Tokyo to force Japan to retreat from Kurils.

But Japan doesn't have an independent foreign policy, it has to do what US orders it to do, how pathetic.
Japan do have independent foreign policy. But just that they cannot accept the reality of rising China and Japan losing to China in all areas.

Look at South Korea. They cant even control their military war declaration but they set their own foreign policy with little anti-China but more focus on anti-Japan despite massive US soldiers presence on their soil.
