Japan plans to construct industrial corridor in India

Chennai: The Japanese government has proposed to construct an industrial corridor in south India and a senior official would visit here this month for signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU), reports PTI quoting Hiroshima Prefecture governor Hidehiko Yuzaki.

"The Japanese government is planning an industrial corridor in South India... Top officials (from the Japanese government) will be visiting here and sign a memorandum of understanding for the industrial corridor", he told reporters here.

Early in May, during the inauguration of the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) office in Chennai, deputy chief minister M K Stalin had welcomed Japanese government investing in developing industrial corridors between Chennai-Bangalore and Chennai-Ennore, besides setting up a multi-level car park near Chennai.

The officials would be coming later this month, Mr Yuzaki, who is on a four-day visit along with a 30-member delegation from Japan, said.

The delegation, as part of enhancing trade relations between the Tamil Nadu government and Hiroshima (Japan), would sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government to carry out activities in promoting investments and people-to-people networking relations, he said.

The University of Hiroshima and Hiroshima International University would also sign a MoU with College of Engineering, Anna University, and Guindy here as part of student exchange programmes.

He said nine Hiroshima Prefecture companies were present in India of which four were operational in Tamil Nadu. During 2000-2009, projects worth $5.3 billion were executed in India.

As of 2008-09, India exported goods worth 300 billion yen to Japan, while it imported 760 billion yen, he said.

Japan, Tamil Nadu to ink MoU for industrial corridor project

Chennai, Nov 8 – Japan and the Tamil Nadu government are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by the end of this month to take forward the Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor project.

Disclosing this to reporters here, Japan External Trade Organisation’s (JETRO) Director General Shinya Fujii said: ‘A senior official of Japanese Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI) is expected to sign the MoU with the Tamil Nadu government.’

The Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor project envisages building six lane roads, a high speed rail network and industrial estates along the route.

Japan has evinced interest in providing its expertise for the project.

Also, a business delegation led by Hidehiko Yuzaki, Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, is here to explore investment possibilities in auto components, food processing and environment sectors in Tamil Nadu.

Yuzaki said a business matchmaking seminar will be held here Tuesday and members of the business delegation would meet like minded Indian businessmen to explore joint venture possibilities.

‘Nearly fifty percent of the delegates are interested to have an Indian partner to start with and the other half would like to go in alone,’ Yuzaki said.

Already four companies from Hiroshima- construction equipment maker Kobelco, rice mill equipment company Satake, pesticide maker Fumakida and precision machinery company Mitsuoyo- have invested in and near Tamil Nadu.

Apart from industrial investments, Yuzaki said his team will meet officials at Anna University to have student exchange programmes between the two regions.

Hiroshima Prefecture and Tamil Nadu government Monday signed a MoU to explore investment opportunities.

‘The MoU is basically to increase people to people networking. We will organise various exchange of business delegations,’ Yuzaki said.

According to Fujii, between 2000-2009 Japanese companies have invested around $5.3 billion in Tamil Nadu.

About Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor

The industrial corridor is being developed in two phases.The first phase will run from Chennai to Sriperumbudur and then to Ranipet. The second phase starts at Ranipet to reach Bangalore through Hosur. Industrial parks, Special Economic Zones, information technology parks and integrated townships are expected to come along the corridor.

Key Advantages

* With plans of a bullet train, a six-lane road and an extension of the metro rail from Chennai to Bangalore, the two cities are coming closer. Sriperumbudur to the west of Chennai is already the most industrialised zone in Tamil Nadu.The government has allocated Rs.3 billion to upgrade two key highways - the industrial artery to Sriperumbudur which is destined to become a six-lane highway and the Rajiv Gandhi Road or the Old Mahabalipuram Road, now known as Chennai's IT highway, says Tamil Nadu's industry secretary Shaktikanta Das.
* The Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) has submitted a detailed development plan to the Ministry of Railways for rail connectivity to Sriperumbudur, about 80 km from here.
* Approval for a railhead near Sriperumbudur, linking it with south Chennai, and a second line to access Ennore and Chennai ports are in the offing. Two other roads are being made to link SEZs in the Sriperumbudur-Kancheepuram area with the airport.
* A third rail line is to link technology parks and IT companies like TCS, Satyam and Wipro along the Rajiv Gandhi Road to Siruseri, a fast-emerging SEZ.
* In the offing is also the Rs.50.6 billion Chennai Metro Project to link Chennai to Sriperumbudur.
* Sriperumbudur and Chennai are home to 110 automobile and ancillaries industries. Tamil Nadu exports auto components worth about $250 million per year.
* Mahindra World City, 30 km from Chennai airport, is monitored by the MEPZ and has about 80 companies including the TVS Group and BMW. The companies here hope to export products worth Rs.80 billion by 2012.
* Chennai airport is south India's largest airport with more than 270 passenger flights and more than 30 cargo flights out of it every week.
* Tamil Nadu has been lobbying for a bullet train between Bangalore and Chennai, 450 km apart, for some years. At present, it takes about four hours by train to travel between the cities.

If i remember correctly there was plan few years back for 6 lane road ...And Airline operators were worried that their passengers will choose to travel by road..

India's relationship with the United States receives much more media attention compared to India-Japan relationship.

That's unfortunate because the United States is not delivering much of value to India. On the other hand, Japan has provided financial investments and technological know-how to major infrastructural projects in India -- from the Delhi Metro to Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor.

yeah.....no other two developed cities with so much potential are so near in distance. Like Chennai and Bangalore.

Bangalore is service hub and Chennai is manufacturing.

Also, 80% of Japanese investment in India is in these cities.

The japanese are saying these two cities can replicate Tokyo-Osaka type scenario in India.

Japan keen to fund Chennai-B'lore corridor

The government of Japan is keen to extend financial assistance to the proposed Chennai-Bangalore corridor project. “This project is another strategic area from our point of view. Big Japanese companies like Toyota are already here, and the Chennai area is also attracting a lot of Japanese investments. We will soon work out the exact amount of financial assistance the Japan government will provide for this project,” Hideaki Domichi, Japanese Ambassador to India said.

The Tamil Nadu government had mooted the corridor project more than two years ago on the model of Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). Both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments have done several surveys involving IL&FS and iDeCK (Infrastructure Development Corporation Karnataka Limited) to know the feasibility of the project.

The Karnataka government, however, has recommended extension of the project up to Mumbai to get full benefit along the proposed Suvarna Karnataka Industrial Corridor passing through NH-4. Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) has shown interest in this project.

Addressing the 33rd annual general meeting of Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC), here on Friday, Domichi said the Japanese government is committed to extend financial assistance to this project.:cheers:

“We are insisting that this corridor project is extended upto Mumbai and also include Mysore so that Karnataka is benefited out of this. We are talking with the government of Tamil Nadu and the Centre. Some feasibility studies are going on presently,” V P Baligar, principal secretary, industries and commerce, government of Karnataka said.

The prime minister’s office is learnt to have tentatively approved the extension of Chennai Bangalore corridor upto Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government has also shown interest in this project as some part of AP like Nellore is included in the project. As part of this project, an 8-lane expressway is approved and is in the tendering process. It is expected to reduce the distance between Chennai and Bangalore by 50 kms. Presently the distance is 335 kms.


“Both the governments of Japan and India are committed to promote the ‘global strategic partnership’ under which we promote major flagship projects such as constructions of the dedicated freight corridor and DMIC. Our official development assistance (ODA) to India, especially in the form of long-term financing is the largest amounting to $2.5 billion per year,” he said.

A consortium of Japanese companies was formed under the guidance of ministry of economy, trade and industry to conduct a pre-feasibility study to introduce various technologies related to the township construction that are most modern and environmentally advanced. When proved that these technologies are applicable, they will be introduced in promoting DMIC, he said.

Domichi said more and more Japanese companies are looking for partners in India for their business expansion. “In order to succeed the Japanese firms should bring their best technologies, not the second rate, modify them to suit the Indian market if necessary, form good partnerships and make India a hub for their global strategies,” he said.

Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry is planning to soon send a delegation to India jointly with the Australian counterpart to explore the ways to participate in public private partnership projects, he added.

K R Girish, the outgoing president of BCIC said both India and Japan need to forge a stronger partnership through economic cooperation, trade and investment.

Baligar said the Karnataka government has acquired close to 4,000 acres land at Mulbagal, Kolar and Hoskote on the proposed Chennai-Bangalore corridor for development of dedicated industrial parks.

The government has acquired 1,200 acres in Mulbagal to promote granite industries hub, 800 acres for a general engineering park at Kolar and 1,200 acres at Hoskote for general engineering industries.

The Japanese government is also proposing to introduce “smart communities” along DMIC.

This is after the the $ 95 billion Delhi Mumbai industrial corridor in which japan have substantial investment.

Already many delegated from Japan have iterated that they have interest in investing and assisting The bullet train network

I have always maintained that we need massive FDI (foreign direct investment) to really achieve our targets. Unfortunately we are still not able to shake off the vestiges of the useless communist-inspired economic policymaking. Things like this are a very good sign, but we really need to unshackle the economy to a greater extent!
