Russian lawmaker believes that Japan will need about 70 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
MOSCOW, December 3 (Sputnik) — Japan will need 70 billion cubic meters of Russian gas per year to satisfy its growing demand for energy, the Chairman of Russian State Duma's Energy Committee said Wednesday.
"I am convinced that Japan will need about 70 billion cubic meters of Russian gas [per year]," Ivan Grachev said at the Moscow business dialogue of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
"Russia's main advantage is its vast territory with low population [density]. Other countries have restrictions. It is prohibited to produce more than a certain amount of energy per unit area. Russia does not have such a restriction and will not have it for a long time. This will secure the delivery of huge volumes of pure energy to China, India, Japan and South Korea," Grachev said.
Following the Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2011, Japan closed all its nuclear power plants, which created a large shortfall in the country's energy production. Japan now largely relies heavily on natural gas imports from Russia, Australia, Qatar and Malaysia and is the world largest importer of liquefied natural gas.
