More symbolic than practical value. When you rise so fast in power like China is doing, it's natural for other countries to become jealous. The question is, what can you do other than symbolic gestures? Can Japan stop China from patrolling our Diaoyu Islands? Can Vietnam stop China from harassing its ships in the South China Sea? Can india stop China from patrolling Tawang or violating indian air-space?

Malacca Straits is overrated. China is an ally of Indonesia and we can access indian ocean from any number of water passages through Indonesia.

when did i say that china is peaceful? I am referring to what the chinese premier said. He was saying that China's rise is peaceful. It is the chinese theory, not mine. may be most fellow Indians don't listen to people from north-east, but please don't count me in that category. you have misunderstood my post. I would listen to the north east Indians rather than the Indian Govt. as you guys know whats going on there, whereas the Govt. may try to hide the reality to cover up its shortcomings.

Look at how eager the indians were to drill in our South China Sea with Vietnam a few months ago. Now they are scared away because we are doing J-10 air strike exercises in Tibet and violating their air space with our combat helicopters.

I think that is a possibility in the future after the Vietnamese Navy gets beefed up. Already India has had joint exercises with nearly every other nation in the region; Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and most frequently with Singapore. So Viet Nam should certainly be considered to be a candidate in the near future.
