Japan hits Russia with more sanctions over Ukraine

POLITICS SEP. 25, 2014 - 07:00AM JST ( 5 )TOKYO —
Japan said Wednesday that it has stepped up sanctions against Russia over the unrest in Ukraine to be in line with other Group of Seven nations before their upcoming meeting in New York.

The new sanctions include banning some Russian banks from issuing securities in Japan and tightening restrictions on arms exports to Russia over its support for the separation of Crimea from Ukraine, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.

It’s the third time this year that Japan has announced sanctions against Russia. But the latest announcement, which comes weeks after the European Union and the United States tightened their own sanctions against Russia, is apparently a last-minute measure to show Japan’s cooperation with the other G-7 countries.

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida will join his G-7 counterparts later this week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Japanese officials made the decision to step up the sanctions with the foreign ministers’ meeting in mind “to place emphasis on our cooperation with G-7,” as well as the current situation in Ukraine, Suga said, adding that the new measures were effective immediately.

Japan’s past sanctions were more modest than those of the U.S. and the European Union, apparently because of Tokyo’s reluctance to complicate relations with Russia, including economic ties and talks over disputed islands.

In August, Japan froze assets held in Japan by more than 40 individuals and groups supporting the separation of Crimea from Ukraine, and placed a ban on Crimean imports. Earlier, Japan had only suspended bilateral talks with Russia on some issues, and imposed an entry visa ban on 23 individuals whom it hasn’t publicly named.

Japan protested to Moscow on Wednesday over a visit by Sergei Ivanov, chief of Russia’s presidential staff, to one of several Russian-controlled islands also claimed by Tokyo. The dispute has kept the two countries from signing a peace treaty formally ending their World War II hostilities.

Well done Japan. Russia should know that there are repercussions for invading/'annexing' a soverign country's land(crimea). We are in 21st century, this is not the 1940s. To make matter worse, its still supporting/arming seperatists in Ukraine even now. Moreover, it has staged war/military exercises close to Japan's coast recently. So in this regard, Japan has nothing to lose by doing the right thing, by sanctioning Russia and calling off Putins Japan visit. This should make Putin think twice about its action in Ukraine, and stop its support for the separatists. The whole world(bar few countries) seems to agree Russia actions in Ukraine are illegal.

. . .
The sanctions so far have silenced Russia over Syria.

Previously, mighty Russia had sent its warships to Syria to stop any US-lead campaign to topple Assad. But not this time.
what makes you happy ? that US lead non elected facist ppl running ukraine ?

Japan just killed its future economic prospect once China and South Korea start using cheaper Russian energy bought with appreciating currencies. Japan one the other hand will be stuck with oil and gas shipped half way across the world from the Middle East, bought with a depreciating currency from their own monetary policy. They have no land for effective deployment of solar / wind and is in a bad location for nuclear, if they could even convince its public again after Fukushima.

Its Western "allies" talks a good game but does not give Japan anything other than some verbal support against China every once in a while. Their public is still buying less and less Japanese products while their governments is still complaining about the Japanese currency.

Talk about a short-sighted government.

More of the same. Nato lackeys doing what nato lackeys do best. Prostrating themselves in front of their masters like good biitches. This will in the end hurt japan the most. They already nukes their own island. idiots

Its not a matter of lackey. Its a matter of principle s/interests. Japans interests are aligned with ours in the west/U.S , and Japan has been in western camp for decades, since the second world war. In fact Japan is only Asian by geography, in all sense its already a western country, and Japan hardly considers itself to be part of Asia more. Like western. They are still the only Asian country in G7. And they were the first Asian country to industrialize and Japan still has the best living standards in Asia. Japan is a unique country in Asia.

As for the sanctions, Japan has nothing to lose, its not as if Russia will ever give back those islands anyway, it will never whether Japan imposes sanctions or not. So it's good Japan stands firm with sanctions on Russia and called off Putin's visit, since shows japan is a responsible country who respects internstionsl laws and will also make China wary of takig a similar step with the senkakus/diayou islands like Russia did iin Crimea. Well done Japan.

Youre just blabbering at this point. And it most definitely is a matter of being a nato lackey. As far as principles. Lol. Give me a break. These idiots nuked their own country and a good portion of the pacific. They still havent fixed their mess and their dumping ton of cessium into the pacific and asking their ownnpeople to moveback into a radioactive wasteland ie fukushima. These slant eyed bastards have no principles. They are only in it so that they can keep printing money so their whole economy doesnt go belly up and they need nato to go along with the ponzi. Whatever this is over your head. Japan will have to buy overpriced liquified gas from the US. This will destroy their economy long term. Just kicking the can down the road until they run out of road. It WILL be fun to watch.

Lool keep telling yourself that. Japan still has the best living standards in Asia which China and other Asian countries can only dream of(bar small city states/countries like Singapore, taiwan and Hong kong).
So talk of Japan collapse is funny to hear, even after more than 20years of 'stagnation' Japans wages/living standards is the envy of many of its Asia neighbours.:enjoy:

A victory for China without question.

The more Japan pushes Russia towards China, the stronger China gets as Russia will back China against Japanese and US aggression. Japan now has to deal with both China and Russia instead of individually. Japan's problems just got a whole lot worse. So did America's by the way having to deal with a much stronger Russian and Chinese alliance.

Forget the US help for Japan, the US military is all talk, they couldn't even stop China from taking the Scarborough Shoal from the Philippines in 2012 even though they have a defence treaty

That spanking the US military received in the Korean War still fresh in their mind.

Russia has shown its impossible to isolate Russia as long as it has mighty China by its side.
China has the market for Russian energy exports.
China has all the consumer goods to export to Russia.
China has provided access to the Chinese capital markets using the yuan for Russian banks and companies.'
China is now exporting food products and oil and gas technologies to Russia.
Russia is now starting to use the yuan and rubble for trade.

Russia gets closer to China and the 2 countries will co-ordinate their policies like one country in the future.

Lool keep telling yourself that. Japan still has the best living standards in Asia which China and other Asian countries can only dream of(bar small city states/countries like Singapore, taiwan and Hong kong).

Japan is already collapsing. Their economy has been dead for 25 years. Their population is shrinking. Their corporations are going bankrupt. Their currency is collapsing. Their economy shrank by $1 trillion last year. Their debt levels are out of this world and inflation is starting to destroy the purchasing power of the Japanese.

Japan is utterly finished as a country and they know it.
That's why the Japanese regime is going rogue as it has nothing to lose.

The sanctions so far have silenced Russia over Syria.

Previously, mighty Russia had sent its warships to Syria to stop any US-lead campaign to topple Assad. But not this time.

Russian warships are still in Syria and it was to protect its base.
If the Syrian war escalates into toppling Assad and damage its base then I won't be surprised if Russia intervened.

Youre just blabbering at this point. And it most definitely is a matter of being a nato lackey. As far as principles. Lol. Give me a break. Japan is doing down the drain. They are just accelerating the process.

Youre simply not a smart person. Period. No need to continue. Ignored

Lool and you think you are smart? Lol OK good for you then.
Coming to topic,no matter how much you wish Japan will go down the drain/Dade away into insignificance, it won't happen. Japan is still the world's 3rd largest economy, its bigger than Britain, France, India and even German, and its a technological powerhouse as well. In fact there are several Japanese companies/products which are quite common/popular in China and even the west. But same can't be said of Chinese companies in Japan, in fact I don't know of any Chinese company/product which is popular/dominates in Japan.
So don't underestimate Japan they are still a country nobody can ignore in Asia whether you like it or not, so China will have to deal with Japan regardless. Same with how the U.S/west we have to deal with Russia, despite our differences and Russia's weakened state compared to its status during the U.S.S.R. its not as if we want to, but we have no choice, since Russia can't be ignored per say despite its Italian size economy.

So you wishing/hoping for a Japanese collapse (just like others wish for your demise as well.lol), but that won't change reality.
