No need for symbolic gesture of JMSDF visiting Taiwan. They are there right off from the Nansei islands.

Well survey says Japan most favorite. That doesn't mean that Taiwan and Japan wants bad relations with the PRC. But just that the PRC needs to understand that just like how the PRC and Japan are nations, Taiwan is a nation as well. To the survey.

Taipei, Nov. 14 (CNA) Japan remains the favorite country for Taiwanese, with nearly 60 of respondents picking the Northeast Asian country, according to the results of a survey commissioned by the de facto Japanese embassy in Taiwan in February 2019 and released Thursday.

Fifty-nine percent of people in Taiwan preferred Japan over any other foreign country or region in the world, up 4 percent from 2016, when the survey was last conducted, said the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (JTEA).

JTEA represents Japanese interests in Taiwan in the absence of official diplomatic ties.

China and the U.S. picked up 8 percent and 4 percent of votes to rank as the second and third favorite countries of Taiwanese, the poll showed.

People aged 30-39 most favored Japan (66 percent), according to the survey.

Japan was also the favorite country among Taiwanese in previous surveys conducted by the JETA in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and 2016.

In addition, Japan remained the top pick among Taiwanese when asked which country they would prefer to visit, with 44 percent picking Japan, 18 percent Europe, 12 percent Australia and New Zealand, 9 percent the U.S. and Canada and 8 percent China.

The same survey also shows that 37 percent of respondents believe Japan is the country or area with which Taiwan should have the closest relationship, followed by China with 31 percent.

However, the survey indicates that only 15 percent of respondents believe Japan has most influence over Taiwan, with the top two picks being China at 45 percent and the U.S. with 33 percent.

The survey was conducted by market researcher Nielsen from Feb. 14 to Feb. 27 2019 via the Internet and computer-assisted telephone interviews. A total of 1,003 samples were collected from Taiwanese aged 20-80 nationwide and the survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

TOKYO -- Japan called Taiwan an "extremely important partner" in this year's annual foreign policy report submitted Tuesday, a step forward from last year's description of "crucial partner and an important friend."

The wording seen in Diplomatic Bluebook 2020, presented by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi to the cabinet, emphasized the relationship amid mounting tensions over the self-governed island's status.

Symbolic of the shift in weight, the bluebook devoted a full page to Taiwan, twice as much space as the 2019 edition.

The report states that Japan "has consistently supported" Taipei participating in the World Health Organization as an observer, aligning Tokyo with the U.S. in its clash with mainland China over the issue. Taiwan has been denied observer status since 2017, after Beijing-skeptic President Tsai Ing-wen took office, and was not invited to the annual meeting that kicked off Monday.

A Japanese government source called the stronger language in the 2020 report an "extension" of the importance Tokyo has placed on Taiwan under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

While past bluebooks through 2012 called the self-governing island an "important region," this changed to "an important partner" starting with the 2013 edition, after Abe took office. From 2015 on, Taipei was referred to as a "crucial partner and an important friend" that shares "basic values" with Japan.

This year's edition further added that Taiwan was "extremely" important.

Abe mentioned Taiwan in passing in his January policy speech to parliament, marking the island's first appearance in the annual address since 2006.

Taiwan is strategically important to Tokyo and Washington as a bulwark against China's maritime ambitions. It also has close economic ties with Japan and the U.S. through its semiconductor industry and tourism.

As for the report's mention of the WHO issue, "not touching on the matter would have raised questions as to why," a foreign ministry source said.

The report also reflects Tokyo's improving ties with Beijing with a reference to building a "mature" relationship for a "new era." This echoes Abe's and Chinese President Xi Jinping's talk of a "new era" of bilateral relations when the two leaders met in December.

Despite this thaw, Tokyo and Beijing still have unresolved issues, particularly China's claims to the Japan-administered Senkaku Islands. The bluebook praises China's support during the coronavirus outbreak, including its help repatriating Japanese nationals, while also urging Beijing to fulfill its international responsibilities.

The two countries "share great responsibility for the peace and prosperity of the [Asia-Pacific] region and the world," it said.

The bluebook tweaks Tokyo's stated stance on its dispute with Russia over the southern Kuril Islands, asserting that Japan holds sovereignty over what it calls the Northern Territories.

The 2019 edition had dropped a line stating that "Japan's position is that the Four Northern Islands belong to Japan" as Abe negotiated with Russian President Vladimir Putin in hopes of ending the long-running row. The 2020 edition restores a softer version of this claim while expressing hope for resolving the issue and signing a post-World War II peace treaty.

The report calls South Korea an "important neighbor" for the first time since 2017. But it also acknowledges the fraying of ties between the two neighbors over the past year, lamenting continued "negative moves" by Seoul.

Taiwan might have become interested in becoming part of the PRC if the PRC started to make some progress on democratic aspects. Naturally a messy democracy like what's happening in the US right now is difficult to suggest for the PRC but some degree of representation based on elections and more freedom in the press. TOKYO: Japan will not join the United States, Britain and others in issuing a statement scolding China for imposing a new security law, Kyodo news agency reported on Sunday (Jun 7), citing officials from countries involved.

The United Kingdom, the US, Australia and Canada condemned China on May 28 for imposing a law that they said would threaten freedom and breach a 1984 Sino-British agreement on the autonomy of the former colony.

There was no immediate response to Reuters' email inquiries to Japan's foreign ministry and the US embassy in Tokyo. China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tokyo separately issued a statement on May 28, the day China's parliament approved the national security legislation, saying the nation was "seriously concerned" about the move, which observers fear could endanger Hong Kong's special autonomy and freedoms.

Tokyo is in a complicated position amid tension between China and the US over the Hong Kong issue as Japan plans Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit, which was scheduled for early April but has been postponed because both leaders have agreed to prioritise containing the COVID-19 outbreak.

If the statement is approved, it will express concern over China's recent moves to strengthen its legal grip on Hong Kong.

"We will consider the Hong Kong issue firmly on the premise of a 'one country, two systems' principle," the prime minister said. "I want to make it known that Japan will lead a joint G-7 statement."

He added, "The G-7 has great influence in leading the world, gathering countries that share universal values such as freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law."

China's National People's Congress approved the Hong Kong security law on May 28.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga immediately expressed "deep concerns" over the moves, while Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Akiba summoned Chinese Ambassador Kong Xuanyou to convey Tokyo's position.
