Japanese ambassador to the Philippines Toshinao Urabe took time to apologize for Second World War atrocities that the Imperial Japanese Army did to the Filipino people. Urabe delivered the message on the day that the Southeast Asian country was commemorating its fallen heroes during WWII, apologizing and vowing “never to wage war again,” saying that Japan has realized that military force is not the solution to tensions.

“Seventy-two years have passed, but it still hurts to remember the hardship and pain suffered by so many during those fateful days,” Urabe said in his speech. “I wish to express our heartfelt apologies and deep sense of remorse for the inexplicable suffering,” he added. Instead, Urabe vowed that Japan will be proactive in promoting and contributing to efforts of peace and prosperity in the Philippines, especially in the troubled regions of Mindanao. He also said that he was very grateful for the “positive attitude” of Filipinos toward the Japanese people despite the history between the two countries. “The Filipinos have accepted to move on. We have been building the future together ever since. Thanks to the efforts of our predecessors, we are now strategic partners,” he said.

Urabe sat together with United States Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg, as both offered their respects to honor the departed war heroes of the country at the Mount Samat National Shrine in Pilar, Bataan – site of the famous “death march” in WWII. Japan, the third largest economy in the world, was among the largest donors towards victims of supertyphoon Haiyan that devastated the central part of the Philippines late last year. Japan had also recently voiced its support for the Philippines’ filing of arbitration against China in an effort to resolve the territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

Truly an evolving face of Japan. It looks like its gearing up to play a more assertive role on the future and is ironing out differences with natural allies.
Welcome move!

A very graceful move by the Japanese. Tokyo is aiming to make amends with those countries who have no unilateral aggression against Japan and is strengthening relations. Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Myanmar etc all have a peaceful foreign policy as such and in the years to come and initiatives taken, Japan is embracing multi-polar world and giving more options to smaller developing countries.

Have any of the allied powers ever apologized for their war crimes???

History is written by the victors in modern times where there is no integrity. While India knows the horrors of British colonialism, the Japanese know the American atrocities after WW2, and the rapes and killings done by Soviet, French and British troops in Germany, the modern day western world civilian population remains oblivious of such crimes because of being grown up in very sheltered surroundings.

maybe they want put filipino girls to more suffering? :D

A very graceful move by the Japanese.

Japanese are well known for its grace. It shouldn't take long for them to apologise to China and Korea for the atrocities of war.

Hiroo-Onoda2.jpg

Hiroo Onoda (小野田 寛郎 Onoda Hirō?, March 19, 1922 – January 16, 2014) was an Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer who fought in World War II and did not surrender in 1945. In 1974, his former commander traveled from Japan to personally issue orders relieving him from duty. Onoda had spent almost 30 years holding out in the Philippines. He held the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army.

This guy killed several pinoy and fake that he was not aware WW2 ended.

Japanese apologize ? Unlikely.

Read the actual words. “I wish to express our heartfelt apologies and deep sense of remorse for the inexplicable suffering,”

He is apologizing for the suffering. He is not apologizing for what Japan did.

You are not going to fool anyone except maybe the Filipinos.

Of course we have apologized, and we are developing very warm strategic relationship with the Philippines.

You , an ethnic Chinese, and married to a Korean, of course have a personal predisposition against Japan.

No I am not against Japan. Nor am I married to a Korean. My apologies if you feel that way. It is not intended.

Japan lost its chance of apologizing over 70 years ago. Japan will never apologize. Even if Japan truly apologize now it will and should never be accepted as it is already too late.

Every word in the "apology" has to be approved by your parliament. Say one wrong word and you will be in trouble. That is how sincere Japanese "Apology" is.

You do not fool me.

Japanese island culture is about absolute loyalty. Absolute loyalty to the country. Absolute loyalty to the Emperor. Absolute loyalty to your company.

Absolutely. When countries utilize the demand for apology for political reasons.

Japan has apologized time and time again , already.

Time to forward Japanese interests.
