Japan a gauge of India's 'Look East' policy
By Chietigj Bajpaee

India's relations with Japan can be seen as a microcosm of New Delhi's much-vaunted "Look East" policy that was launched two decades ago.

Improved ties between Tokyo and New Delhi could be seen in the United States-Japan-India trilateral dialogue in October 2011, the India-Japan Global Partnership Summit in September, the implementation of the India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in August and the Malabar 2011 naval exercises between Japan, India and the US in April.

India's relationship with Japan is a unique barometer of its presence in East Asia and the challenges it faces in cultivating its role in the region. Both countries have traditionally punched below their weight in the evolution of the regional security architecture due to historical and geopolitical constraints.

I have sometimes wondered as to why the burgeoning India-Japan ties fails to muster even one tenth of the media buzz compared to the ratag rest who offer us precious little.Prioritizing our relations with nations like Japan or South Korea where both parties stand on common grounds and through which India stands to disproportionately gain in terms of technology and infrastructure is something that our polity as well as our media sources need to wisen up to.Not to mention the FDI that flows into India from nations like Japan demands to be maintained delicately.India can sure take pointers from how the United States maintains it's relationship with Japanese investors.

It's high time that we get our act together and focus on playing to our interests rather than bending over backwards in order to please hopeless "friends" where we get to pick up the tab in the end.

Japanese and Americans are Capitalists.

Americans are Greedy ones!

They see better Investment Prospect in China and hence Most of the FDI goes to China, not India!

Chinese Communists became Capitalists, While in India Socialists are the same Crapa*ses!

Figure out!

^^India foreign policies also tend to be reactive, not pro-active. Indian leaders have no vision. They are busy catering to lowest common denominator.

Not really. Japanese FDI in India has been on a steady upward roll and currently stands at a very tempting horizon. You will also have to factor in joint ventures where transfer of technology has mostly been one-sided and to India's favor,tie-ups with Indian Commercial giants like Reliance and the drive to improve infrastructure in India as shown by the Delhi Metro.

You will have to be blind to forgo or ignore all that.
