Governor pledges security to FATA journalists
PESHAWAR: The government will provide security to journalists working in tribal areas but they must coordinate their visits with the local administration, NWFP Governor Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai said on Saturday.
ââ¬ÅJournalists are free to travel in FATA but they must coordinate their visits with the local administration,ââ¬Â he said talking to a delegation of Tribal Union of Journalists headed by Mr Sailab Mehsud. The governor said press clubs would be made at agency level and quarterly briefing would be arranged for FATA journalists. Accreditation cards would be given to FATA journalists after a plan has been devised in this regard, he added.
He stressed the need for unity among FATA journalists and said FATA had gained international significance after September 11, 2001. Journalists must therefore act responsibly and exercise extra care and commitment, he said. ââ¬ÅThey must keep national interests above everything else,ââ¬Â he said.
He said FATA journalists, being accustomed to the traditions of the areas and the ground reality, could remove misperceptions about tribal areas. They should show the true picture of tribal society, he said, which was democratic, progressive, realistic and righteous. He said journalists should highlight the ongoing development in FATA, which he said was unprecedented. Secretary to Governor Arbab Muhammad Arif and FATA Director General (Media) Mr Shahzaman Khan were also present on the occasion.
The delegation informed the governor about their problems and made several demands. nni
