I know the jamaran is a old design but the radars systems, it's armaments, electronic warfare is all modern and new. You see, Iran could not just jump to making a 3000 ton war ship, we have to start from jamaran and hopefully the next stage for Iran is making the loghman (Persian Gulf destroyer).

Now, for the role of jamaran 2 which is stations in the caspian sea, it does not really matter how new the design is what matters is the amount of missiles it has to defend. in caspian sea, stealth will not mean anything so Iran would be wasting resources making a stealth frigate for caspian sea.

stealth tech mean a lot of thing in every war ! it IS important not to be detected in long distances ...

we will see our heavy stealth destroyers in next years .... we just need to wait ...

I meant in the caspian sea stealth is not very useful because caspian sea if relatively small compared to open ocean.
You're absolutely right to say stealth would be important in open sea.

Perhaps @gambit can give an explanation.

Caspian sea does not have long distances so I am saying stealth will not matter that much. it open sea yes, the more stealth you are the better. in open sea you have to us Over the horizen radar I think.

Caspian sea is too large ! even the hormuz strait is about 300 kms ! ( maximum range of the anti ship cruise missiles that i know) .
now sea the size of the caspian sea !!!! it's too big ! enough for a ultra ship fight ...

yes but our ships have to stay in our part of Caspian sea. jamaran 2 is a very good ship for caspian sea, what we need to do is design a ship that can carry lots of cruise missile and air to air missile.

we need to innovate, we can't just look at what others do and do that, we need to make things for our own need.

both in Persian gulf and Caspian sea, there is not any ship off radars whether it's stealth or not. stealth tech in naval industry is most effective in high seas. when our radars can detect objects as small as aircrafts and drones, it's silly to think those massive ships are invisible in radars.

This is exactly my point. However, Iran still needs to design ships with stealth capability for high seas, even if it's just for experience we need to do it.

The size of the body of water is irrelevant. What matter is the radar horizon...

When opposing naval surface combatants squares off against each other, the assumption is that air support WILL NOT be available, and that assumption applies even to US. If the above calculator is used under the fact that a ship's radar is only a few meters off the surface, that will not make for a very far radar horizon, so when it is ship's radar versus ship's radar, the ship with the higher antenna elevation will have the longer radar horizon, meaning he can see further than his opponent can. This make 'stealth' shaping for naval surface combatants an advantage.

and after this range , you can use OTH radars ( but with a lower Accuracy ) . still stealth is a factor that can guarantee your life in long ranges ....

for example the Mineral-ME radar (nato name : Band Stand) with a range of 450 kms and ability to detect 200 targets and tracking 50 targets can easily be a nightmare for you , if you don't be stealth while your enemy is stealth .... i'm not saying that with stealth you won't be detected at all ! the important thing is that not to be detected from 450 kms away ! 100 kms away is much better , because it gives you a fir chance ...

"Jamaran 2 frigate has been built with the purpose of safeguarding the Islamic Republic of Iran's sea borders and supporting missions in combat against human, goods and narcotics trafficking in the Northern parts of the country," Brigadier General Vahidi said, addressing a ceremony for launching Jamaran 2 frigate today.

The advanced home-made destroyer was launched in the Caspian Sea in an official ceremony attended today by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi, and Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari.

Vahidi pointed to the defensive and offensive capabilities of Jamaran 2, and said that the destroyer is equipped with different types of artilleries, torpedoes, missiles and tactical radars.

Vahidi noted that the advanced frigate, which is about 100 meters long and weighs more than 1,300 tons, is one of the most practical and multipurpose destroyers in the world which can even become an export product of the defense ministry in the future.

He said that Jamaran 2 will join the Navy's subsurface fleet in the first half of the next Iranian year (March 21-September 22) and after undergoing the final tests in the next two to three months.

Vahidi also noted that if Iran had purchased a destroyer similar to Jamaran 2, it would have cost the country four times more than its building expenses.

In a statement yesterday, the Iranian Defense Ministry said that the destroyer which has been designed and developed by Iranian experts uses the state-of-the-art navigation systems and domestically-made sophisticated defensive equipment.

The destroyer which is the symbol of power and capability of the Iranian naval industry will join the Navy's subsurface fleet in the first half of the next Iranian year (March 21 - September 22) after undergoing final tests, the statement noted.

Earlier this week, the Iranian defense minister had said that the advanced Jamaran 2 frigate, which has been designed and developed by Iranian experts at the defense ministry's naval industries organization, will be launched in the Caspian Sea in the near future.

Iran's first home-made destroyer, Jamaran, was launched in late February 2010. The Mowdge(Wave) Class vessel has a displacement of around 14,000 tons and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities and is armed with a variety of anti-ship, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.

you are Ignoring land radars, linked and passive radars almost annihilates stealth benefits. without land radars it's like ship is in the high seas. also our enemy in Persian gulf is using Air support for sure.

I think if instead of investing about 75 million dollars on jamaran 2 , we had invested on a VLS missile , it would be much better , because with that method , we could have increase the weapons to about twice of now ....
