BENGALURU: Test pilots at defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) flew for the first time an upgraded Jaguar fighter aircraft fitted with an AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar.

The Jaguar Darin III, which HAL is upgrading for the Indian Air Force (IAF), will now boast of the state-of-the-art AESA radar and improved features like multi target tracking frequency agility, higher bandwidth of operation, interleaved modes of operation, higher accuracies and resolution.

HAL and Israeli firm ELTA, whose radar the defence PSU has fitted the Jaguar with, had completed the ground trials in February. Apart from the AESA radar, the aircraft will also be equipped with 28 new sensors, among other things.

With all the new features, the Jaguar Darin III is expected to serve the IAF for at least another decade. The IAF, which has been struggling to keep up its fighter plane strength at the desired level was satisfied with the initial upgrade plan and the aircraft had received the IOC (initial operational clearance) in November 2016.

The upgrade incorporates new state-of-the-art avionics architecture including the Open System Architecture Mission Computer (OSAMC), Engine and Flight Instrument System (EFIS), Fire Control Radar, Inertial Navigation System with GPS and Geodetic height correction, et al," HAL said.

It added that the plane will also boast of Solid State Digital Video Recording System (SSDVRS), Solid State Flight Data Recorder (SSFDR), Smart Multi-Function Display (SMD), Radio Altimeter with 20,000 ft range, Autopilot with Alt Select and Identification of Friend or Foe (IFF).

the jaguar has already ceased production 36 years back .

no one is even sure if india has spare parts for this aircraft to keep it serviceable.

And its also quite doubtful if age will affect the spare parts.

Not too sure ... some critical items such as the engine and ejection seat r imported, the rest including avionics is completely built in india. (servicing including the engine is done in india)
For the Darin 3 , u can add the AESA Radar system which is not manufactured locally (initial batches , later yes )

NOTE : Last jaguar built in india is in 2015 . Now upgrade are happening

IIRC, the last new Jaguar rolled of the HAL B'luru line in 2007/8.

For the purpose of spares, India is buying retired French and U.K jaguars in bulk.
This will solve all the service related issues until Indian jags are retired.

I amnot understlanding, why lwe allrenit going behind su34s. Its cheepa, ling legged, and better payload capacity than rafale. May not be as goid as rafale when comes to avionics, but suerly capable to strike deep inside china.

We dont need Su 34 when we have Su 30

The Jaguars have lot of life Left ; They carry CBU 105 and other air to ground Munitions

WIth AESA we have converted them into 4 gen planes overnight

They also carry CCM s for self defence and SPJ pod

Su30 and 34 are different in many aspect, one is multi role fighter while 34 is a strike fighter bomber. 34s range is unmatchablle.
