The lack of reliable domestic production is adding to the woes of Indian defence forces. The sarkari companies cannot come up with anything sensible or dependable and valuable foreign exchange has to be spent on importing basic items like rifles, ammunition, helmet, kevlar jackets etc.

you have no idea about indian companies... many indian companies export bullet proof helmets and BJ to overseas countries, TATA, defense system, MKU mare major players in this field. MKU even export these to US, Britain, Germany.
they only question is why don't our defense forces buy from these companies in a large quality??

apart from these companes, our DPSU also manufacture BJ and Helmets for our defence forces, those BJ and helmets used by our armed forces are manufactured by our DPSU. they are not imported.

You have no idea about the state of Indian PSUs. Yes the private companies are doing a great job and I whole-heartedly support private companies over corrupt and useless organisations like DRDO. But the fact remains that Indian armed forces - the end users - import from foreign countries. Why is that?

Indian made BPJ and armor is way too heavy. Modern armies are going for lighter and tougher vests while India is going for heavier.

Every crack unit of Indian armed forces uses foreign weapons and equipment. Para commandos, marine commandos, special protection group, special forces - ALL these best units of India use foreign goods.

BJ and Helmets used by our armed forces are not imported. those are made either in privet companies or OFB.
before getting into the weight issue, pls search the weight of the BJ used by US army Infantry unit.
special forces need lighter BJ, indian companies manufacture Light Weight BJ. as you know the time takes from testing to introducing the equipment are very lengthy in our defence forces, so don't expect our forces using/ introducing New models of BJ because the time they introduce these, there will much better BJ in the market.

even US special forces Uses German and Belgium assault rifles(H&K 416/417 and FN SCAR-H/L)

Read the OP properly and do some research. India is the world's largest arms importer because of lack of reliable domestic suppliers.

And not only US but India also uses foreign weapons for its special forces. Nobody in the army likes the junk INSAS.
