JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir government has locked three private schools and warned two others in Anantnag district and threatened them of de-recognition for their refusal to participate in upcoming January 26 function, due to volatile situation in south Kashmir.
A team of district administration officials after failing to convince owners of the schools to send their students for participation in the program sealed a portion of the properties of three schools.
"This was a sort of warning. This is not sealing. We locked a portion of their properties. They cannot dictate terms. We are all living in the territory of this country and have to participate in the national festival. They cannot operate independent of the system. Future course of action depends whether they participate or not," a senior district official told ET. The schools, he said had to participate as per the rooster prepared by the chief education officer of the area.
The district administration remains under tremendous pressure from the government to manage participation and audience for January 26 program at respective headquarters. Most of the times government officials are directed to show their presence at the parade along with their families necessarily. The students from government and private schools are also directed to attend the function.
"The deputy commissioner abused us even when we apprised him about the situation and unwillingness of parents to send their children to such functions. Who will be accountable if something happens to even one child? He even asked us to better cross border if we don't participate," owner of the Smart Mission School, Asif Nazir Dar, who participated in the meeting, told ET.
The situation in Kashmir continues to remain tense since 2016, after killing of Burhan Wani and south Kashmir ..
"We would participate in the function but situation has changed now. We have asked them to call all 40 to 50 schools in the area and then decide. We cannot take the risk," said owner of another school.
The schools government has threatened include Shemford Futuristic School, Radiant Public School, Smart Mission School, Oxford Presentation School and Creative and Advanced Training School, where more than 5000 students are enrolled.
