Three militants were killed and a jawan was injured in a gun battle between security forces and militants in North Kashmir's Handwara area of Kupwara district.
The encounter started on Saturday evening. After specific information about presence of militants, the joint operation of army's 21 RR, 6 RR and SOG cordoned off the whole Krumhura area.
During search operations, militants opened fire which triggered the gun fight. The operation lasted for 12 hours.
Sources in the army say the identity of the killed militants is yet to ascertained but there are apprehensions that they were part of a recently infiltrated group.
Search operations are still on.
There has been a spike in ceasefire violations along the Line of Control by Pakistan and gunbattles between security forces and militants lately.
A Pakistani militant, Naveed, was captured shortly after he and an accomplice killed two BSF men and wounded nearly a dozen soldiers by ambushing a convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Udhampur earlier this month.
A top Lashkar commander and his aide were killed at Pulwama while two militants and a soldier were killed near LoC during infiltration bids by ultras at Keran and Tangdhar sectors in gunbattles with security forces in August.
