Sri Lanka reiterates commitment to uphold ban on illegal Indian fishermen, Rs.1 bn loss daily: Minister

Apr 07, 2015 (LBO) - Sri Lanka’s is losing one billion rupees daily due to illegal fishing by Indian fishermen in Island's Northern waters, minister of fisheries said
.
The new regime also plans to strongly uphold its ban on foreigners fishing in the Indian Ocean Island's waters.
“During recent discussions with Indian fishermen, they asked for 83 days per year for three years to fish in our territorial waters,"

"But we will not allow this," Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Mahinda Amaraweera said.

"we are losing one billion rupees a day, this what their catch is worth,"

“This is a drain on the earnings of our fishermen,"

He said about 60,000 people in the North of the Island depend on fishing for their livelihood.

“The Indian groups assured they will fish five nautical miles off the Sri Lankan coast,"

The Islands fisheries industry contributes significantly to the nutrition, employment and even foreign exchange earnings of the country therefore the industries sustainability has become a primary concern in economic development of the country.

Sri Lanka perceives illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU fishing) as a serious threat to the sustainability of fisheries in both national jurisdictions and high seas, and agrees that such fishing has to be prevented, deterred and eliminated.

“As of now the Navy has 27 boats and 37 Indian fishermen in their custody,”Amaraweera said.

“And now we have decided to also confiscate their tools and nets in addition to their boats as this will also be a further deterrent for them.

Give it a effin rest will you.

You are not convincing anyone that that current SL government will do anything about the poaching Indian fishermen.

The have gone out of their way to allow Indian fishermen to do what they like. They have released all the trawlers, and even allowed the Tamil Nadu fishermen to hop across the Palk Strait and pick them up.

They are more than happy to let the Indians "rape and pillage" Sri Lankan resources.

. . .
India bans beef, Pakistan banned Pork long long time back. Do we Indians even bother or care about pork consumption in Pakistan? It amazes me to see the concern in Pakistanis about our beef consumption policies.

This thread is about a fishing problem between India and Sri Lankans. But looks like the Pakistanis are desperate to get attention here.

We all know, who will get slaughtered then.....
Beef is not banned in India. Water buffalos are kosher. :p

For that people repayed with gratitude.. His first term gave so much hope for everybody.. But nobody gave him and his coterie the right to rape and pillage the country in the next five years to thier liking..That's what people with third world mentality cant comprehend.. For them hero blind hero worship is more important than the nation.. Sad reality of tribal and feudal mind set that still exist in some of you

You speak without any understanding about Sri Lanka. Do you think we have any other alternative besides Mahinda?

Do you expect us to side with the people who mock everything including the war effort?

I'm not living in Australia where there are genuine politicians (as I hope) who really care about their country. I live in Sri Lanka where one party is hungry for the power who lost it for their own acts but try to gain it through any means necessary including selling the country to the highest bidder.

Give some respect to the local voters who have to compare apples to oranges.

SL mulls punitive action to keep TN poachers at bay

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday said that punitive action would be taken to discourage Tamil Nadu fishing fleet from poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

Addressing the media at his ministry, Minister Amaraweera said that as an initial step fishing nets and other equipment would be confiscated in addition to legal action taken against poachers.

The minister urged Sri Lankan fishermen not to stray into Indian waters.

Responding to a query, Minister Amaraweera said President Maithripala Sirisena, Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe as well as the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) had agreed to curb poaching.

Minister Amaraweera said that the Indian fishing fleet had deprived northern fishermen of their livelihood. The minister estimated the number of families affected at over 60,000.

The government was determined to protect fishing resources and in accordance with the overall government strategy, the navy would arrest poachers. Declaring that Sri Lanka held 37 poachers and 25 boats, Minister Amaraweera said that the navy would intensify operations.

Asked by The Island whether the government had requested India to prevent her fishermen from crossing the Indo-Lanka maritime boundary, Minister Amaraweera asserted that India had been reluctant to take meaningful measures to stop poaching. Blaming Tamil Nadu politics for the predicament of northern fisher folk, Minister Amaraweera alleged that fishing craft engaged in poaching belonged to members of Tamil Nadu state assembly and other influential persons.

Commenting on recent talks between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankan fisheries representatives in Tamil Nadu, Minister Amaraweera emphasized that Sri Lanka would not under any circumstances accept a proposal to allow the Indian fishing fleet to fish in Sri Lankan waters for 83 days per year. The minister revealed that Tamil Nadu sought an agreement for a three-year period to allow fishing five nautical miles off Sri Lanka.

While emphasizing the importance of working closely with India to resolve the matter, Minister Amaraweera said that the government would strive to discourage poachers.

The minister said that representatives of fishermen would continue discussions to explore ways and means of reaching a settlement.

When the media questioned the basis for such talks as Tamil Nadu had no right to seek fishing rights in Sri Lankan waters, Minister Amaraweera asserted that discussions would facilitate a better understanding between the fishing communities.

Fisheries Secretary Nimal Hettiarachchi said that the situation had improved over the years, though poaching remained a contentious issue. Some time ago, as many as 1,200 Tamil Nadu fishing craft had invaded Lankan waters on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, Hettiarachchi said, adding that today the government and the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) adopted a common stand to combat the issue.

Lankan Navy drives away TN fishermen near Katchatheevu | Business Standard News

A group of fishermen who put out to sea in 250 mechanised boats from here returned empty handed today after Sri Lankan Naval personnel allegedly pelted stones and bottles at them near Katchatheevu.

Fisheries department officials said no fisherman was injured in the attack around midnight last night.

The fishermen were not allowed near Katchatheevu, though they had the right to dry their nets in the island as per the agreement under which the islet was ceded by India to Lanka in 1974, they said.

The fishermen have been pressing for restoration of fishing rights in traditional areas.
