Italy has the luck to host almost all of Europes active volcanos.

Each one has its own unique character.

The one that gave all firemountains of the world its name...

Vulcano:

Vulcano is a very calm one. It has constant activity on a very low level and is famous for tourism. Some geologists say that Vulcano is very dangerous, because the last big eruption was in 1890.

Stromboli:

Close to Vulcano is Stromboli.

Stromboli is constantly active and the only constantly active vulcano in Europe. Sometimes it has bigger eruptions but it is possible to walk up to the main crater. There is constant lava flow. You are only allowed to go up there with a local guide.

Stromboli is incredible steep. It is also one of the highest mountains of Europe if you meassure from its base. Its over 3000 meters.

Then we have famous Etna.

Etna is one of the largest vulcano in the world. Over 3200 meters high and with dozens of craters. That mountain has almost evry year a eruption bust most are relative safe because the lava streams dont reach the villages.

It is really spectacular

and last but not least...the most famous one Vesuvius

aka Mt. Doom

Vesuvius is considered the most deadly and dangerous vulcano in the world. He lays dormant for hundreds of years but erupts with incredible power and force. Rocks the size of city blocks are fired over 40 km wide. It generates a gigantic ash cloud which alsmost reaches 60 km altitude.

The effects can be seen close nearby at the old roman city Pompeii

The old imperial city was destroyed by Vesuvius but also preserved under the ash. You can see the bodies of the victims and its a sad sight

Vesuvius is the most watched volcano worldwide. The close proximity of the city Napoli adds even more danger.

Should you ever visit Italy you should try to see each one of them.

.
Its ironic. Just today Mt. Etna erupted once again and its spectacular

watch it live right now!

Which was the volcano that destroyed the town of Pompei? Was it Vesuvius? Btw most of us Pakistanis know very little about Italy.

Yes it was Vesuvius. Vesuvius is incredible dangerous.
Cool. I want to read up on books about the reunification of Italy so if you have any suggestions do suggest. I do know somewhat of the Roman Empire, Visigothic conquest and the Kingdom of Naples but don't know how Italy was unified in the end. I learnt there were states like Milan, Genoa and Venice, each independent. Don't know how eventually Italy became what it is now. I am a history nut btw.

Btw are you Markus? Your avatar is the same.
