It would be disappointing if Pak players in spot fixing aquitted: Lorgat

DUBAI: ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said that it would be disappointing if the ICC tribunal acquit the Pakistan players in the case of spot fixing.

The players – former Pakistan captain Salman Butt, pace bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer – are facing the investigation over allegations of spot-fixing in the series against England earlier this year.

A three-member ICC tribunal will hear their case in Qatar from January 6 to 11.

However, it is strange that the ICC chief executive gave the statement before the hearing saying that he was confident of the case against the players.

"We need to send out a strong message and that is part of what we want to achieve," Lorgat said.

"We've worked hard at collecting all the evidence that we would require to make the charges stand. I am confident that our guys have worked very hard in ensuring they have got a case they can present which should stand the test of scrutiny."

The ICC tribunal, led by code of conduct commissioner Michael Beloff, will hear the case in Doha, Qatar from January 6 to 11. The two other members are Sharad Rao and Albie Sachs.

The ICC provisionally suspended the three players in September following reports in British tabloid News of the World which claimed Pakistani players, including the suspended trio, took money to carry out orders from a bookmaker at specific stages in the Lord's Test in August.

Cricket: Sinking further...

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat remains confident that cricket’s governing body will seal the case in its favour when an independent tribunal decides the fate of Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif.

The three suspended Pakistan players, who are being investigated over spot-fixing allegations made during the England tour, are set to face the tribunal January 6.

“We need to send out a strong message and that is part of what we want to achieve,” Lorgat told the BBC. “I am quite satisfied with the three judges we have managed to secure.”

The ICC, which suspended the players when the allegations were first made by the British tabloid the News of the World, also held a hearing against the players’ provisional suspensions in Dubai in October that was rejected by the one-man tribunal that comprised Michael Beloff.

While Salman and Amir had appealed against their provisional suspension, Asif chose not to and instead opted for a full hearing. The hearing rejected appeals against the suspension, creating a ruckus between Salman’s lawyers, who said that the tribunal is biased.

Beloff will also head January’s full hearing against the trio along with fellow code of conduct commissioners Justice Albie Sachs of South Africa and Kenya’s Sharad Rao.

Lorgat meanwhile, remained confident of securing the case. “We’ve worked hard at collecting all the evidence that we would require to make the charges stand. I’m confident that our guys have worked very hard in ensuring they have got a case they can present which should stand the test of scrutiny.”

He added that the trio, if found guilty, will be dealt with accordingly while revealing that they were still entitled to appeal any ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“We would want to be proportional but at the same time we do not want to show any leniency. These are severe
issues and integrity of the game is absolutely fundamental and we would not want to tolerate any of that in the sport.

“My understanding is that any matter that we decide on in a disciplinary process is always open to contest in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) stood firm against the ICC when the allegations were first made. The stance prompted the ICC to
provisionally suspend the trio, thus forcing the PCB to pull them out of the One-Day International (ODI) squad that took on England. The Pakistan board then stopped all financial and moral support for the trio.

Salman’s lawyer lashes out

In a reaction to Lorgat’s statements, Salman Butt’s lawyer Khalid Ranjha hit back and said that the ICC chief’s comments were close to “threatening the tribunal” to give a verdict against the players. “What Lorgat has said is tantamount to threatening the prospective tribunal,” said Ranjha, a former Pakistan law minister. Ranjha, who is the lone lawyer representing the suspended opener after Aftab Gul gave up on the case, also said, “The ICC wants the judges to give a decision on dotted lines and this is not a good example set by the ICC official.” Ranjha also represented Salman in his unsuccessful appeal hearing and said he believed the ICC was trying to pressure the players into boycotting the tribunal. The hearing is set to start on January 6.

. .
So we pretty much know the verdict of the trial. ICC don't want the trio to play. And it's pretty sad because Amir was going surpass Wasim Akram and Waqar Younus. Lorgat is an idiot for being so bias. Not to mention that he has handpicked the ICC judges for the trial.

.
Isn't that INFLUENCING the outcome of an appeal - THIS CASE should be thrown out as the Lorgot guy is biased from get go :hitwall:

What an idiot and probbly PCB gave him the vote of confidence to get him ellected to with the usual , oh lets help each other rant untill the guy gets in power and then first chance he gets he backstabs PCB

The Pakistani player case is simple

a) Proof in court of law that they were guilty of any crime (Yes / No)
they have been given not guilty verdict by police.

b) If Not Guilty so why is ICC wasting TIME of players and they should Sue ICC for
lost wages.

Players have right to socialize , becoming a cricket player does not means you sit in your room all day and night !!!

Infact the players should sue ICC for illegally banninhg them -

The bottom line is - police cleared them from all wrong doing and case closed

Secondly - you cannot associate guilt by association or words of third party
unless you can prove , WITH OUT A SHADOW of doubt the three innocent Pakistani players took cash then we have a case.

The Lawyer should simply ask , show us the court orders that state the parties were guilty or not

How many times Pakistani players are LBW by ICC umpires ? you don't hear pakistan claiming the umpires are on agenda to knock out Pakistan from cricket ?

If the case will be closed after world cup we understand , ICC does not wants pakistan to be full strength in Major Cricketing event as its a SLAP in its face who denied Pakistan from World Cup Games

This is all going back to time when PCB took ICC to courts and this is a PAY back for it

Example : You go to bank you take out 200 dollars, and you spend few dollars in store and it turns out you have 10$ bill that is fake , and police investigates you does that mean you are guilty ? No ...

May be Mazhar was paid by Mafia to make that video he was told if he joined in , he will get 10 million dollars , from sales of news paper and other bets when Pakistan will lose in games due to pressure, all he has to do is give few marked dollar bills to Pakistani players

The players will take it because they were expecting to be paid for service (sponsorships)

A video could be made AFTER the game !!! and they can just claim that oh such over will have no ball etc I mean anyone can make that video

I can make video of Sachin and say he will hit four and six in such over after the game

Later when I meet Sachin will give him 200 bucks (marked and say this is gift for your wonderful centrury ) in night time police will come to his room and check to find the dollars so he cheated as well

ICC need to get their act together and get back to playing cricket and PAY PCB full $$ for World Cup game revenue ....!!!

If they think that by banning PCB they can KEEP ALL THE WORLD cup money for themseleves OWED to pakistan they are smoking some serious hashish

ICC is trying to save its face,
They have no hard, solid proofs to convict the trio.

Dont worry the great Aitazaz Hassan will make sure, they are not wrongly convicted ;)

Again PCB can take ICC, that tabloid, Mazhar Majeed to the court, but depends if they really want too.

There should be no disappointment if they are acquitted or nothing to feel happy if they are punished. The requirement is justice. Mr Lorgart appears to be a party.

Lorgat told the BBC. “I am quite satisfied with the three judges we have managed to secure.”

Then why doesn't he secure a decision against players before the hearing, biased *******
