ISRO's budget is just three per cent of that of NASA
PTI, Mar 3, 2010, 08.29pm IST

TUMKUR: Indian Space Research Organisation's budget is just three per cent of that of its US counterpart NASA, its Chairman K Radhakrishnan said.

Delivering a convocation address at Tumkur University, he said despite the low funding, the Indian space programme is ready to take a giant leap towards inter-planetary missions and human space flight programme.

"The success of Chandrayaan-1 prepares the basis for many futuristic missions. Mission planning is being carried out for Chandrayaan-2, Mars orbiter and Aditya, the maiden solar mission to study solar corona," Radhakrishnan said.

But the most ambitious of all is the Human Space Flight Programme in which two astronauts would be sent to low earth orbit and would be safely "landed back".

According to him, with 15 consecutive successful launches, India's workhorse rocket PSLV is considered the most reliable launchers in its class in the industry.

With the development of GSLV-Mk III rocket, the launch capacity to geo-transfer orbit would be raised to four tonnes which means "an adult elephant being carried to 25,000 kms above the earth".

"The astonishing fact is -- all these were achieved on a stringent shoe-string budget. Our budget for the financial year 2009-10 which also happens to be our highest ever, is just three per cent of NASA's budget for the year 2010," Radhakrishnan said.

Given the Budget they are operating on,ISRO is doing a commendable job.

The only thing that is going for ISRO is that it is free from political clutches and decision making hence the development. If the same can be done to the DRDO then it would have achieved better than what it has.

thats come around to mere half a billion dollar..(0.52 billion $)

or 0.016% of indian defence budget!!

ISRO has come a long way, people use to laugh at ISRO the same way they are doing for DRDO, in next 2,3 years they will start respecting DRDO too. The same thing applies to any R&D institute, we are not even 3% in many places and people say we have not contributed much in R&D.

ISRO makes every Indian proud, fondly remember those days in the 90s when there was not much to cheer in India, well before this globalization and booming economy and world recognition stage, except any news of ISRO making and launching satellites in space, used to raise our collective morale and belief in our nation's abilities.

OFF-TOPIC

and the countdown starts....5,4,3,2......
for the great shchinese and others of his ilk to show ISRO and Indians there place, O yu indans got no capability, china got mahability, china block sun for india if india look at china with crook eye.....china have ability to change rotation earth so india rotate out of asia and go far from china......india rocket use 2 stages, solid cow dung stage and liquid cow urine stage, so rocket go no far, fall on head of delhi itself.......

just a cheap attempt at humor guys, no offence:cheers:........just can't help it given how these guys ruin every positive thread about india

Please edit the last part of your post. It wasn't funny. For the sake of the thread...
Its a request.

commendable job the ISRO guys are doing...
but the gap is understandable...NASA has forayed so much into space research...that no country/organisation...or even consortium of organisations can beat it let alone the ISRO...
NASA has done more for mankind than any one country can ever do...
we can only hope to take some of the burden of human endeavors in space..off NASA's shoulders...

I disagree with you on this. ISRO's progress is exponential since the day of first rocket launch. They've never let us down in the progress and keeping upto date with developements and that too with the fraction of the cost we spend on defence. I dont think anybody in this world laughed at ISRO other than our 2 fellow neighbours.

Now, DRDO on the otherside is eating money, as simple as that. yet to see the bang for the buck.

ISRO ROCKS Always, I miss a opportunity to join there by margin, bad luck 4 me..!

Am proud of what ISRO has done for INDIA . It makes our country proud .though i dont agree with you about DRDO .DRDO has done so much for our country . Well DRDO are making missiles , tanks , naval & army & airforce equipments and hardware .they are all indigenously made by DRDO . Well there is lots of research and development taking place to make indigenous defence weapons . DRDO is not dedicated to one research and development while ISRO is dedicated to space research and development . Thats the reason for DRDO not giving enough as ISRO . Well had read sometime back that DRDO shall have thier labs all over the country dedicated to a particular field such as missiles , tanks etc . If this happens it shall make more difference and there shall be more results from DRDO . An happy with Both ISRO and DRDO for making india proud .
