Indigenously Developed High Thrust Cryogenic Rocket Engine Successfully Ground Tested for a duration for 800 seconds

India’s first indigenously designed and developed High Thrust cryogenic rocket engine generating a nominal thrust of 19 tonnes was successfully endurance hot tested for a duration of 800 seconds on July 16, 2015 at ISRO Propulsion Complex, Mahendragiri. This duration is approximately 25% more than the engine burn duration in flight. The engine will be used for powering the Cryogenic stage (C25), the upper stage of the next generation GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle of ISRO, capable of launching four tonne class satellites.

This cryogenic engine of C25 Stage operates on Gas Generator Cycle using extremely low temperature propellants – Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) at 20 Kelvin (-253 deg C) and Liquid Oxygen (LOX) at 80K (-193 deg C). The various subsystems of the engine are – regeneratively cooled Thrust Chamber, Gas Generator, LOX and LH2 high speed turbopump systems, flow control components, close loop mixture ratio control system, Pyrogen igniters, fluid systems, etc. The turbopump system rotates at a speed of 36,000 rpm with a power level of 2 MW.

This high performance cryogenic engine was conceived, configured and realised by Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), the lead centre of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) responsible for developing liquid propulsion systems for Indian Space Programme. The Engine design was totally in-house effort with experts from different fields like fluid dynamics, combustion, thermal, structural, metallurgy, fabrication, rotor dynamics, control components, etc., working together. The fabrication of major subsystems of the engine was carried out through Indian Industries. Assembly and Integration of the engine and Testing were carried out in ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC), a unit of ISRO.

LPSC has also developed a cryogenic upper stage of 12.5 tonne propellant loading and successfully flight tested it in GSLV Mk-II vehicle on January 05, 2014. Compared to this stage, the C25 stage has a higher propellant loading (27 tonnes versus 12.5 tonnes) and higher engine thrust (19 tonne versus 7.5 tonne).

The recent successful endurance hot test of the first high thrust cryogenic engine is the tenth test in a series of tests planned and executed as part of the development of the engine employing complex cryogenic technology. The performance of the engine closely matches with the pre-test prediction made using the in-house developed cryogenic engine mathematical modelling and simulation software.

Prior to engine realisation, a series of subsystem level tests were carried out to independently evaluate the design of major subsystems like the turbopumps, thrust chamber, gas generator, flow control components, etc. Based on the confidence gained, the integrated engine testing was initiated.

As part of the C25 Stage development, further tests are planned in High Altitude conditions and in Stage configuration, prior to the flight stage realisation.

Mastering this complex, high performance cryogenic propulsion technology will go a long way in building self reliance for the Indian Space Programme.

Awesome job.Now get it done, launch the gsat-6 this year with gslv mk2 and then start focussing on semi cryo of 2000 kn.
We need to move fast to negate decades of neglect compared to the west.

I am not putting dampener on this, surely it is a great news and I also hope that ISRO send GSAT-6 this year with our rocket, but as in some thread a friend from our neighbor pointed out that India has achieved powerful engines for a short duration, but lacks developing powerful engine for a long duration. He was pointing to Kaveri engine. And he is somewhat right. Can't ISRO help DRDO in that??

Exactly we need to be independent in this area as fast as we can

No,since materials required for sustaining heat for huge durations of time are different than those required for short durations like rocket engines.

Even al-31 of russia had shitty 1500 hours life, its their newer 117s and 117 that have >4000 hours life.

So unless we make rapid strides in materials ISRO cannot help DRDO otherwise it would have already helped.

Plus problems with kaveri were manifold,,the foremost being overzealous designing without taking into account the infrastructure available.
They designed the kaveri to be a variable cycle engine for god's sake:hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

Let me get blunt on this!!! nothing to cheer for so called Indian space enthusiasts.... swallow the truth,, we are far far behind in space exploration. We haven't even mastered Geo Synchronization Technology,, let's first put someone on moon and then cheer achieving something. May be its heart breaking ... reality is ..we are at bottom of space technology.

.
But why are Indians building rockets when poverty, crime, women, slums....?

Its NOT Needed.

#1. India needs to focus on Core Space technologies which are needed to BUILD the Nation not to BOAST ( as in Cold War Era )

#2. A : The Real Pride lies in Uplifting the Overall Life of a Common Indian and not in getting an Indian on Moon. ( Im talking of moon , not space ( < 800 KM , below van - allen belt ) )

#2. B : Russia never put a Man on Moon, yet they have a far more advanced space" technology" , im terms of engines and rockets. They ( and India too ) lack only thing : $$$ , USA spent close to $100 Billion ( Adusted to , 2010 ) to put a Man on Moon, is it wise to spend this money grater than our Defence Budget ?

#3. We are NOT in the BOTTOM. we are Amongst the TOP 5. We havent done what USA has, but thats not needed. India is only behind schedue in Cryo Engines, we need 5Ton Lift capacity ASAP and then focus on TSTO / SSTO.

But why are Indians building rockets when poverty, crime, women, slums....?

Bcoz all these get eradiated and removed by Space technology , Space technology is like "Food" in mordern era, we cant stop eating coz a murder ttok place.

Besides, USA has a far more greater Crime and Rape rate. So ?

We have to cover lot of ground of course. Recently i was browsing space forum they were discussing 2 supply run to ISS that failed . Ipeople discuss nasa partner with isro apart from Russia. They don't trust china.

India is among handful nation which can laucnh sats using in house developed SLVs.

Also it is first Asian Nation to conquer Mars and only nation which conquered Mars in first attempt.

Gslv mk3 and RLV will put India in different league all together ...8-)

There s going to be weakly rocket launches :partay:
