they go before the launch.sometime back 2-3 yrs back i saw the traditional tirumala namam on the rocket .i'll try to find those pics.

whatever soothes their nerves ...

people do weird stuffs when they are nervous or a bit clueless... eg. Some one lights a candle in church before exams someone makes sure they don't miss 5 namaz that month.. as for agnostics like me kiss their Girl-Friend before the exam so that it goes well..
