BlueBird Aero Systems, an Israeli designer, developer, and producer of Micro, Mini and Small tactical UAS and peripheral equipment, will reveal a new cargo release capability of its ThunderB UAV at Eurosatory 2018.

ThunderB, a small, long-endurance tactical UAS (approx. 30Kg, 4m wing-span), can carry small cargo units under each wing, and release the cargo automatically or by a GCS command. The cargo is carried and released by an integrated, electro-mechanical release mechanism. The released cargo is housed in an aerodynamic enclosure (capsule) to reduce the drag to the minimum.

Upon automatic release of the capsule, it will reach the target with high accuracy following a ballistic trajectory. The cargo capsules can also be dropped with the aid of a small parachute to prevent damage to fragile items.

The ThunderB supports a wide range of optional payloads including a triple sensor, three-gimbal gyro-stabilized payload, with a cooled thermal imager, HD day color camera and Laser Pointer and BlueBird's RGB, NIR and Radiometric photogrammetric payloads. The ThunderB can also be integrated with other payloads such as non-imaging payloads, small SAR, and others.

With a long endurance capability (up to 24 hours), extended control range (150Km), and a variety of optional payloads, the ThunderB is suitable for long, covert, low signatures ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) and/or tactical mapping on demand (TMOD) missions.

“This remarkable addition is the result of lessons learned from operational needs required by our operational customers and was designed to extend the capabilities delivered by our field-proven systems,” says Ronen Nadir, CEO of BlueBird Aero systems. “This capability, on board the cost-effective, reliable, high-performance ThunderB UAS, enables to perform new missions associated with the modern battlefield, the HLS requirements, as well as with the commercial market.”

Additional platforms to be displayed at Eurosatory 2018:

SpyLite, a combat-proven extended-performance electric Mini-UAS, is optimized to provide covert, “over-the-hill” or extended range real-time visual intelligence. SpyLite can operate for up to 4 hours, even in severe weather conditions, and has a communication range of up to 80 km. The system can be configured to back-packed, vehicle-mounted or HQ stationary configurations. Combining a stabilized color (Full HD 1080i) and IR payloads with proprietary ground exploitation software, the SpyLite allows for GPS-marked imagery to be relayed in real time to the ground station.

MicroB, a Micro-UAS weighing approximately 2Kg, is equipped with gimbaled and stabilized dual EO/IR payloads. It can be autonomously launched from hand-held launcher within seconds, even in a crowded urban environment, providing high-quality video and images, with GIS information and automatic target tracking.

At Eurosatory 2018, Elbit Systems will demonstrate for the first time the Strike-cell capability to operate networked and automated multi-sensor and fire systems combat arrays; unveil the E-Lynx Software Defined Radios (SDR) enhanced package including new vehicular and man-packed configurations; and launch two new sensing and targeting systems.

Networked Strike-cell

The company will hold a demonstration of an operational scenario presenting a networked and automated multi-sensor and fire systems combat array. Conducted from a specially-designed C2 Strike-cell, the demonstration is initiated by utilizing the Torch C5I system running on the SDR E-Lynx communication network that orchestrates various sensors – radars, ground and airborne Electro-Optic (EO) and many others – to detect, identify, verify, and incriminate potential targets. Then, powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) fusion and analytical tools are applied to perform automated combat designations and call for fire processes, instantaneously analyzing and prioritizing fire systems, and optimally matching fire systems and the mission. Utilizing E-Lynx’s high data capacity, a wide-band actionable video image of the target is then disseminated to relevant fire systems such as Spear mounted on a light 4X4 vehicle, the SkyStriker loitering munitions system, Remote Controlled Weapon System (RCWS), and infantry weapon smart sights, allowing rapid and precise fire engagement.

E-Lynx SDR enhancement package

In addition to new vehicular and man-packed configurations, Elbit Systems introduces several key technology enhancements to its E-LynX system, including the implementation of a unique concurrent flooding technique that extends coverage, sharply decreases delays and improves efficiencies; the expansion of range and stability of supported waveforms, which further improves usability and interoperability; and a significant decrease of size and weight that reduces the load on dismounted soldiers and facilitates easier installations in dense combat platforms. The company says this enables them “to offer an operational and backward compatible E-LynX enhancement package that provides a radio system of an exceptional immunity, with more than double the throughput and a better form factors.”

Sigmacell – an active cellular intelligence system

Sigmacell is a real-time active cellular intelligence system that neutralizes cellular communications of terrorists and criminals. SigmaCell is designed to detect, identify, intercept, and expose details of target cellular devices and their precise location. Sigmacell covers the full spectrum of cellular communications (GSM, UMTS, and LTE), and is able to capture hundreds of devices simultaneously.

"Globes" looks at some of the military developments and applications of the record 52 defense companies that will be on show in the Israeli pavilion in Paris.

A record number of Israeli companies are participating in the Eurosatory land and airland defense and security exhibition opening today in Paris. 52 defense companies will display military developments and applications in the Israeli pavilion for meeting the challenges facing armies and security agencies on the 21st century battlefield, in the framework of terrorist events, and protection of borders and sensitive installations. Eurosatory is one of the world's most prestigious defense exhibitions.

Europe is the world's second largest target for Israeli defense exports after Asia. Exports to Europe last year accounted for 21% of all Israeli defense exports. Israeli defense exports set a all-time record of $9.2 billion in 2017.

Ministry of Defense International Defense Cooperation Authority (SIBAT) principal deputy director Paul Friedberg told "Globes," "Israel is among the most prominent countries at the exhibition, due to the large number of companies with exhibits and the diversity of products displayed in the Israeli pavilion." He added, "Since the most recent Eurosatory exhibition in 2016, the number of Israeli companies participating has risen by 40%, following realization of the potential for weapons deals in the European market, among other things due to the plan to increase defense budgets in NATO countries by 2%."

The many opportunities arising in the European market are raising expectations of more intense competition between the companies. The Ministry of Defense is trying to overcome this emerging trend while tightening industrial cooperation with other countries. SIBAT head Brig. Gen. (res.) Michel Ben-Baruch said, "The Ministry of Defense is augmenting its efforts to increase the number of deals between governments and between companies and countries, while transferring know-how and production to other countries around the world."

Bullet-proof gasoline tank

Most of the Israeli companies with exhibitions in Paris are and medium-sized companies, including Carmor Integrated Vehicle Solutions, which is unveiling a lightweight but heavily armored military vehicle that facilitates agile movement by forces or supplies of equipment to forces operating in a battle zone. Steadicopter is displaying a small unmanned helicopter capable of flying for three hours and gathering tactical intelligence through the use of electro-optic cameras.

Magam Safety is displaying a unique flexible tank used to store and transport liquids such as gasoline or water. The great flexibility of the tank, which is installed externally on military vehicles, makes it bullet-proof. General Robotics is displaying the Pitbull - a light weapons station designed for being installed on military vehicles that makes it possible to detect and intercept drones while the vehicle is in motion.

Supergum, located in the Barkan industrial zone, develops and produces protective masks for non-conventional warfare attacks. The company is displaying a range of developments in its field, including a special kit that makes it possible to quickly sample the air at any site of interest in order to determine whether non-conventional weapons have been used in the area.

A robot border defense system

The major Israeli defense companies, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., Elbit Systems Ltd. (Nasdaq: Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd.(IAI) (TASE:
IAI wins $150m European SIGINT, EW deal

IAI unveils robot border protection system
Elbit's new Georgian factory could jeopardize Israeli jobs
Rafael set for Iron Dome sale to Romania
IAI unveils new defense system based on Barak missiles

IAI is unveiling an innovative operational concept for the Barak missile system - MX, designed to provide air defense of land and sea-based targets against a broad range of threats.

The defense system is based on three different missile interceptors from the Barak defense missile family: one for short ranges of up to 35 kilometers, one for medium ranges of 35-70 kilometers, and one for long ranges of 70-150 kilometers. The system is capable of supporting radar systems and launchers for different types of Barak family missiles, thereby ensuring coverage of wide field cells against attack by warplanes, helicopters, UAVs, air-to-ground missiles, and ground-to-ground missiles.

The system's activity features operational and operating flexibility facilitating selection of the type of radar and interceptor according to the type of threat. The system is based on Barak defense missiles for which the $2.4 procurement deal with the defense authorities in India, signed last year, was the biggest defense deal in Israel's history.

In the system revealed today, the range of the Barak 8 missiles will be doubled by means of a special one meter-long rocket accelerator. This will enable the missiles to intercept threats from a distance of 150 kilometers. Another advantage of the system is the ability to launch missiles designed for different ranges using the same launchers, based on the same command, control, and radar systems.

"Technological and modular innovation of the system provides a solution to a broad range of operational challenges, while effectively managing battlefield resources," IAI Systems, Missiles & Space Group general manager and executive VP Boaz Levy told "Globes" today. "The new system reduces the cost of procurement and is attractive to many potential customers. I predict that in the foreseeable future, we'll hear about deals involving it, possibly substantial ones."
