Video allegedly shows hunger-strike leader Barghouti sneaking food
Footage released by Prison Service purportedly shows convicted terrorist leading mass protest eating in cell bathroom on two occasions
BY JUDAH ARI GROSS May 7, 2017, 8:26 pm 6

Judah Ari Gross is The Times of Israel's military correspondent.

The Israeli Prison Service released a video on Sunday purportedly showing Palestinian inmate and hunger strike leader Marwan Barghouti secretly eating a candy bar and other food in the bathroom of his cell on Friday.

Barghouti, a convicted terrorist serving five life sentences, has been leading a large-scale hunger strike among Palestinian prisoners to push for more privileges, ratcheting up tensions with Israel and on the Palestinian street. The strike entered its 21st day Sunday.

The video shows two separate occasions — on April 27 and May 5 — in which Barghouti could be seen apparently unwrapping food in his prison cell and eating it in his toilet stall.

When asked for comment, a prison service spokesperson said: “The video speaks for itself.”

The Times of Israel could not independently verify the dates the footage was recorded. Throughout the segment from April 27, a timestamp could be seen on the bottom corner. However, there is only a timestamp at the beginning of the May 5 segment.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan decried Barghouti as a “murderer and a hypocrite” for eating while leading a hunger strike.

“As I said from the very beginning, this hunger strike was never about the conditions of the convicted terrorists, which meet international standards. It is about advancing Marwan Barghouti political ambitions to replace Abu Mazen,” Erdan said, using Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s nickname.

“Barghouti is a murderer and hypocrite who urged his fellow prisoners to strike and suffer while he ate behind their back. Just like he lied to the world when he wrote in the New York Times that he decided to strike in order to protest ill-treatment, he lied to the Palestinian public when he claimed to be striking. Israel will not give in to extortion and pressure from terrorists,” Erdan said.

In each of the clips, the prisoner can be seen unwrapping food from a piece of paper, sitting down on the toilet and eating, before he stands up and brushes himself off.

The footage from April 27 is less clear, as Barghouti closes the door to the stall, but in the segment from Friday afternoon, he can be seen breaking off pieces of the Tortit and moving them toward his mouth.

Barghouti’s face cannot be clearly seen in the footage, as he looks down and away from the camera.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon said Barghouti’s actions proved that the hunger strike is “a media stunt, which seeks to glorify terrorists with blood on their hands.”

There was no immediate comment from the Palestinian Prisoners Club.

Earlier in the day, Qadoura Fares, head of the advocacy group, said the hunger strikers had begun taking vitamin supplements a week ago. He said guards stepped up punishment, seizing all personal items and leaving prisoners “with nothing except their beds.”

According to Palestinian officials, 1,500 inmates have refused food since last month to protest conditions. However, Israeli officials say only some 800 continue to refuse food and have threatened to bring in foreign doctors to force feed the prisoners.

Barghouti is a popular figure in Palestinian society and is seen as a possible successor to Abbas. Some analysts in Israel have pointed to the hunger strike as a bid by Barghouti to show Abbas he still wields political power.

If these so called Palestinians were in Arab or Muslim country they would have been executed for long time

Not true, it has always been an extremist society..

How many of Israel's PM's and senior leaders were members of the Stern and Irgun gang terrorists? They did to the Palestinians what the original settlers did to the native Americans and what happened to the Australian Aboriginals.. Israel was founded by the dregs and criminals of European Jewry.

LOL! For an Indian you really have put in a lot of effort to defend Israhell. How much do you get paid to do this? I havent seen a post of this length from you defending India in Kashmir! Muahahahaha! You are an embarrassment.

The guy is just trolling at this point, playing a hit and run game. He didn't provide support for his claims. He's just rambling with different rhetorical statements each post. It's a waste of everyone's time. No point in going over anything if he's just going to ignore everything other than his rhetoric. He's doing it on purpose to look for a way out, and he thinks I'm some little child that will take the bait for his rhetorical gibberish. I won't, and my post is still there addressing what needed to be addressed, and people can see it. He conceded that he's here just to be a child and cannot support his arguments.

Hunger Strike Leader Barghouti Eaten Alive on Social Media After Tape Shows Him Snacking in Secret
Instead of triggering a debate about the Palestinian prisoners' hunger strike, the focus of the video backlash is on the choice of candy

It was unfortunate product placement that unleashed an avalanche of snark. Marwan Barghouti, one of the leaders of the hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jail, was caught on tape by Israeli authorities stealthily eating in his cell. His furtive snacking was then broadcast around the world by the Israel Prison Service on Sunday in order to undermine his leadership.

The prison service said Barghouti, who is serving multiple life sentences for his role in the killing of Israelis during the second intifada, has been filmed eating twice since the strike began. On April 27, Barghouti is seen eating cookies and a few days later, on May 5, the prisoner is seen snacking on a candy bar. The prison service didn’t say how Barghouti obtained the food, but sources in the organization confirmed that they set him up in an attempt to see whether the prisoner was really sticking to the hunger strike.

The candy bar that Barghouti is seen wolfing down was clearly identifiable to any Israeli by its shiny green wrapper. It was Tortit, the Israeli chocolate-coated waffle with thin layers of almond cream, which has been on the market since 1975. The non-dairy snack, popular with vegans, is a familiar and nostalgic brand with a retro image – like Snickers in the United States.

On Israeli social media, reactions to the recordings posed a pathetic demonstration of the superficial and cold-blooded nature of internet culture. The recordings could have triggered a discussion about the implications of the prisoners’ three-week-old hunger strike; or the political fallout of Barghouti being caught indulging; or what it says about the morality of a state that wields its control over a prisoner to tempt him and then record him succumbing to the temptation in order to score political points. Instead, the focus was on the candy.

As soon as the Tortit was spotted, Hebrew-speaking accounts on Twitter and Facebook exploded with sarcastic, mean-spirited posts, memes and jokes about the candy bar: “You can’t count that as eating because Tortit isn’t really food,” one person wrote, with another adding, “if it were between dying and having to eat a Tortit, I think I’d rather die.”

Others photoshopped images of Barghouti in heroic poses with the snack.

Another tweet featured the text "The new campaign. I'll have two Tortit," accompanied by a photo of a prisoner flashing the victory sign with the candy bar photoshopped on the image.

Right-wing social media users celebrated what they saw as the prison service’s clever exposure of Barghouti’s true character.

Several people paired images of the candy bar with bottles and cans of Coke in a reference to the recent report that Israel’s Coca-Cola franchise donated thousands of dollars to the left-wing bashing group In Tirtzu in 2015.

“A great Monday morning Mediterranean breakfast,” right-wing Army Radio talk show host Erel Segal wrote under a photo of him with a Tortit in his mouth and a bottle of Coca-Cola standing in front of him on a table.

Other users, however, were disgusted by the prison service’s choice of tactic, not its choice of snack, calling the move “shameful” and “embarrassing.” One person tweeted, “Israel investing in a candy bar as a weapon only proves that Israel lacks real tools to deal with prisoner hunger strikes.”

Many were particularly critical of the public preening by Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, who went on a media blitz after the tape’s release. Erdan took credit for the recording and emphasized its use in destroying Barghouti’s image as a brave leader. “Gilad Erdan is preening over ‘Operation Tortit’ as if it was the destruction of the Iraqi nuclear reactor,” one tweet read.

As the video of Barghouti eating bears no time stamp, it is unclear when it was filmed. The release of the video, however, does appear to be carefully timed. It hit the airwaves and the Internet on the same day the 1,200 hunger-striking prisoners called on the World Health Organization and other bodies to intervene to prevent Israeli authorities from force-feeding them.

Before the tape’s release, former Lebanese Prime Minister Salim Hoss and Gregory III Laham, patriarch of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, had announced separately they would stage a one-day hunger strike in solidarity with the prisoners. The outing of the recording also followed a demand by the prison service that Barghouti’s attorney forgo representation of any other prisoners who are hunger striking in order to meet with Barghouti. The strikers, who have been refusing anything but salt and water since April 17, are demanding additional privileges, including more public telephones on prison cell blocks and additional family visits.

Barghouti, who was sentenced in 2004 to five life sentences after being convicted of murder, wrote an opinion piece for The New York Times in April that caused widespread backlash in Israel and among the country's supporters. In the bio accompanying the piece, Barghouti was described as a "Palestinian leader and parliamentarian." Backlash ensued in Israel and among the country's supporters and the paper ended up adding an editor's note to the opinion piece explaining the reason for Barghouti's incarceration.

Marwan Barghouti declares hunger strike, caught clandestinely noshing in his cell

Marwan Barghouti is hungry no more.

Last month, the Palestinian terrorist currently serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison for his role in planning three attacks that claimed the lives of five civilians, took to the pages of The New York Times to tell the world that he will join with many of his fellow incarcerated terrorists and starve himself in protest for what he described as “Israel’s inhumane system of colonial and military occupation.”

Like so much of Palestinian nationalism, however, Barghouti’s protest turned out to be just a piece of bad theater, lacking any candor, courage, and conviction. Yesterday, Israel’s prison authority released videos that clearly show the allegedly suffering Barghouti enjoying cookies and candy bars in the privacy of his own cell. Talk about a hungry, hungry hypocrite: as soon as he’s done wolfing down the treat, Barghouti rushes to the toilet and flushes away the evidence, like a furtive smoker in an airplane bathroom.

Having gone on a prolonged hunger strike myself some decades ago, I know what forgoing food does to your mind and your body. I know how hard it can be, which is why I’m not at all surprised to learn that Barghouti just didn’t have what it takes to transcend. Men who have no qualms about murdering innocents are not and can never be resilient leaders, just as national movements focused on advertising and exaggerating their victimhood are not and can never be committed to true reconciliation. Barghouti, poetically, is the perfect embodiment of Palestinian officialdom: speaking of virtue to a gullible international audience before retiring to a corner and indulging in vice. Bon appetite, Marwan, and if you’d like some more snacks, Israel’s inhumane system of colonial and military occupation will be happy to provide.

How low can the Israeli gov't sink, using a video dating back to 2004, to discredit the 1,500 hunger strikers making some mere simple demands. Whether we believe you or not, it's not important to anyone that someone ate some salt or a tiny cookie in a prison located in his own occupied territory, where he was imprisoned in the West Bank because Israel has been colonizing it for the past several decades. By bringing foreign Jews from all around the world to transfer them on Palestinian territory through brute force to live in Jewish only 'settlements'. Most recently, a whole new project for 25,000 settlements to bring in how many tens of thousands of foreign Jewish people to live in.

PS: This not in any way or form 'trending' on social media. Only some weird, radical, low Israeli Jews are sharing that. No one on social media is hearing about this. Your low government is sinking to a newer low by the day. There's literally no one that supports your current behavior, besides those paid by lobbyists or employed by Israel.

If I had asked, you would have simply lied. So I am posting just ONE of your posts about Turkey, a country to which you neither belong nor do you have anything to do with:

Why did you post that? Why don't you mind your business? Do you want me to post a the other stuff you wrote about countries you have nothing to do with?
