Israel working on 150km Barak ER (extended range), Will India follow and enhance its LR-SAM? Published January 12, 2017 SOURCE: Anand SG / FOR MY TAKE / IDRW.ORG (left) Barak ER next to Original Barak-8 Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has formally confirmed the development of what it describes as “a family of new-generation” Barak advanced all-weather, day/night air-defence systems for land and naval applications. Barak ER (extended range) is effectively a base model of the highly agile Barak-8 missile with 150 km range which is more than twice the range of original Barak-8/LR-SAM which was 70km. Barak ER will have an addition of a large diameter solid-propellant jettisonable booster to the existing dual pulse rocket motor. Not to be mistaken Barak ER is completely IAI-developed system and there is no Indian contribution in it but with minimal hardware changes Indian Co-developed LR-SAM/MR-SAM can follow same engineering path to develop longer ranged interceptor missiles since it can leverage on the existing Barak-8 architecture, which is same IAI Elta ELM-2248 S-band digital active phased array Multi-Function Surveillance, Track, & Guidance Radar (MF-STAR) 360º radar . The booster increases the length of the missile at launch from its current 4.5 m to nearly 6 m, although the length of flight after the booster has been jettisoned may be slightly less than the base Barak-8 missile and the missile diameter and fin spans are thought to be the same as the base Barak-8. DRDO has not officially commented on it but Buzz is that current LR-SAM/MR-SAM have already been enhanced locally up to 90km and in future, it will be decided if there is a need to further enhance it to 150km if any of the operators make such a demand. LR-SAM/MR-SAM are currently been developed for Indian Navy and Indian Airforce.
