'Israel targeted 17 trucks in Sudan'

Fri, 27 Mar 2009 13:09:05 GMT
Sudan says Israel has been 'most probably' behind two attacks on a truck convoy which killed up to 40 people in the country's north.

"The first thought is that it was the Americans that did it. We contacted the Americans and they categorically denied [that] they were involved," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ali al-Sadig said on Friday.

"We are still trying to verify [the American's claim]. Most probably it involved Israel," he added.

Citing two American officials, The New York Times reported on Friday that the attacks on a convoy of 17 trucks in Sudan in January and February were an Israeli operation to prevent what they call 'arms smuggling' into the Gaza Strip.

Sadig said Sudan was gathering evidence at the site, and would not react to the attacks while the investigation was still ongoing. He added that the convoys were likely smuggling goods -- not weapons.

Sudanese government had earlier dismissed the The New York Times report, saying the US forces had carried out the attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Thursday that Israel has acted 'wherever' possible to strike at its enemies, but did not specifically mention the attack in Sudan.

The US and Israel signed a deal to prevent arms smuggling into Gaza after Israel failed to achieve the goals it set against Hamas in Gaza.

I think Israel should understand that killing others this way does hardly solve anything. They create more and more enemies. It is shame that a nation that advertises with their history of mass murdering and in the end they just copy exactly what Hitler did. Putting people in jails, killing females and children, using massive force, destroying land and building big concentration camp and now atticking other nations... It is a big shame.

They have become like there daddy they think they can go anywhere and do anything this is un justice and very wrong and the world and the UN should wake up to this saga .

so now when we say that jews cant be our friends, than world says we are discriminating. y should we even think of being friends with them when they target our ppl. for those who were advocating recognising israel as a state, here is the answer.

There is no indication that Israel was targeting any Pakistani. I've already trashed one story here that purported to make Israel into an enemy of Pakistan; why must this be done over and over again?

The Israelis don't believe in starving or killing civilians en masse, as the Sudanese president does - an approach supported by the Arab leaders at yesterday's Doha Summit.

I don't think you have much idea of what you're talking about. The Arabs of Gaza and the West Bank receive huge amounts of foreign aid, access to modern and even Israeli medical care, and one of the highest birthrates in the world. Arabs in Israel aren't fleeing the country and enjoy greater property rights than Jews do.

On the other hand, for example, nobody helped my parents when my grandparents, aunts, and uncles were stripped of their humanity, then gassed or died from lack of medical care. However, some individual Arabs and Muslims did help some Jews escape from such a fate - I know some very grateful survivors.

In Gaza some innocents died because the militants who attack Israel employ them as shields or unwilling combatants, but the true threat to the populace is the systematic targeting of entire families who fail to conform to the desires of terror networks like Hamas or Fatah.

As for "attacking other nations" - the Nazis were bent on world conquest, whereas the Israelis are engaged in a fight for survival. The weapons puportedly on those trucks would have been used to bombard the population.

I'm not sure that Israel is actually "creating more enemies" by its actions; they are very good at targeting the bad guys and leaving the general population alone. The contrast between the Israeli Army of today and the mass-killing Pakistan Army of 1971 is pretty extreme. If you look at matters with a long view of history, the trend is towards greater acceptance of Israel by Arabs; the problem is that as its enemies become better armed and equipped, the danger to both the Arab and Israeli civilian population increases.
