The Iron Dome anti-rocket shield and passed a critical test in the past 48 hours, the Ministry of Defense said on Thursday evening, in a message that will be welcomed by residents of Israel’s rocket-battered communities of the western Negev.During the test, a number of rockets “of the same type that were fired in recent years at Israel” were fired, and the Iron Dome system responded “accordingly,” the Defense Ministry said, in a message indicating a successful interception of the projectiles.

The Iron Dome system is slated to defend southern and northern Israel from rocket attacks by Hamas and Hizbullah, and is set to become a key component in a multi-layered missile defense system, which includes the Arrow anti-ballistic missile shield.

Iron Dome is being developed by the Defense Ministry’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and the Technological Industry in conjunction with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

Sources in the ministry expressed satisfaction with the results of the test, describing it as a “milestone” and adding that the trial verified simulations and research work carried out beforehand.

Pinchas Burchis, Director-General of the Defense Ministry, congratulated Iron Dome engineers on the successful test, adding that hastened work on the system would enable its installation in the near future.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the development of a multi-layered missile defense system was a “national mission aimed at reaching the stage in which a clear majority of missiles do not reach their targets.”

Earlier this month, Danny Gold, Head of Research and Development for the Ministry of Defense’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and the Technological Industry, said work on the Iron Dome had reached its “final stage,” and was running “ahead of schedule.”

“This system can be developed in a fifth of the time it would take to develop other systems, and at a tenth of the cost,” Gold said. “It is the cheapest system in the world.”

Israel is now one of the world's best protected states from missile and rocket attacks! All thanks to the Palestinians and the Iranians!!

They already have the Arrow 2 and are developing the Arrow 3 system. They already have one of the best anti-aircraft defenses in the middle east. They were provided a X-band long range radar system courtesy of the US and now they have the Iron Dome anti-rocket and mortar shield to protect them from rocket attacks.

They are now better protected than even Continental America with respect to active protection systems.

* System passed final tests, to be deployed by November
* U.S. says Iron Dome will help Israel take peace steps

JERUSALEM, July 19 (Reuters) - An Israeli system that shoots down rockets passed final tests on Monday and will be deployed near Israel's borders by November, the Defence Ministry said.

U.S President Barack Obama in May asked Congress for $205 million to support the development of "Iron Dome", which intercepts short-range rockets like those used by Palestinian militants in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The system successfully shot down multiple rockets simultaneously for the first time in testing this week, Israel's Defence Ministry said.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak has argued Iron Dome could be a necessary safeguard to reassure Israelis in the event of a withdrawal from the occupied-West Bank that comes in the framework of a peace deal with the Palestinians.

Senior U.S. State Department official Andrew Shapiro said last week that U.S. support for Iron Dome will, "provide Israel with the capabilities and the confidence that it needs to take the tough decisions ahead for a comprehensive peace."

Produced by state-owned Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd., Iron Dome uses small radar-guided missiles to blow up Katyusha-style rockets with ranges of between 5 km (3 miles) and 70 km (45 miles), as well as mortar bombs, mid-air.

Its development was spurred by the 2006 conflict in Lebanon with Hezbollah and the Gaza Strip war against Hamas 18 months ago, when those Israeli towns within range were all-but defenceless against the rockets.

The two units the Defence Ministry said will begin operating by November are truck-towed and easily deployed to any of Israel's borders.

Israel launched a devastating three-week offensive into the Gaza Strip in late 2008 to try to curb the cross-border salvoes.

Israel envisages Iron Dome becoming the lowest level of a multi-tier aerial shield capped by Arrow, a partly U.S.-funded system which shoots down ballistic missiles above the atmosphere.

Each Iron Dome interception is estimated to cost $10,000 to $50,000. Pitted against estimated costs of cruder Palestinian rockets, as low as $500, that could bleed the defence budget, some analysts have argued.

But Barak has brushed off such criticism, pointing out that were Israel to go to war in retaliation for serious casualties in a rocket strike, the campaign would cost $1.5 billion a day.

The Defence Ministry has said the system may also be manufactured for export in the future. (Reporting by Dan Williams and Ari Rabinovitch; Editing by Jon Hemming)

In one of the threads here, I heard that we're going to buy this. Guys please confirm. It'd be really amazing to see this in our arsenal.

Yes, we are in talks with Israeli's over this system. Now this system has passed it's final tests.

India in talks to buy Iron Dome, David's Sling

Indian Ministry of Defence to "Defense News": Procurement of David's Sling or the Iron Dome would be a "pleasure".

"Defense News" reports that India is in talks to buy Israel's ground-based rocket and missile interceptor systems Iron Dome and David's Sling.

David's Sling, designed to intercept medium-range missiles (70-240 kilometers range), is being developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. and Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN). The system is also n the Ministry of Defense.

Indian Ministry of Defence sources told "Defense News" negotiations between the Israeli and Indian governments on a deal for David's Sling had been going on for more than six months. The sources added that Israel was open to sales of David's Sling, but that it would not transfer the system's technology as part of a deal.

The sources said that India was developing its own missile interception system for short and medium range missiles (50-80 kilometer range), known as the PAD. However, this system cannot intercept low-flying cruise missiles. This may be the reason why India is interested in the Israeli system.

An Indian Ministry of Defence official said that neither its aging Russian-built air defense systems nor the PAD system can serve as the country' sole line of defense against potential missile threats from Pakistan or China. He said that the procurement of David's Sling or the Iron Dome would be a "pleasure".

Thanks..So would Iron Dome and David's Sling be used alongside PAD or are they again killing indigenous program and going for a foreign one?
