Israel politically defeated after UN vote on Palestine: Analyst
A Canada-based analyst says the recent United Nations General Assembly vote on Palestine has left Israel politically defeated, Press TV reports.
“The whole world finally understands that it is the Palestinian people that have no partner for peace and not the other way round. In other words, all of the masquerades, you know, the mask has fallen off; Israel is politically defeated,” Bruce Katz, Co-president of Palestinian and Jewish Unity said during an interview with Press TV.
On November 29, United Nations General Assembly voted 138-9 with 41 abstentions at the UN headquarters in New York, to upgrade Palestine’s status from “observer entity” to “observer non-member state.”
The analyst went on to say that the nine countries that have voted against the resolution have been isolated and marginalized.
Following the vote, Israel ordered the construction of 3,000 new settlement units in the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem).
Katz sees Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new construction order as a move aimed at gaining support for elections in January, “having suffered a serious political defeat at the United Nations.”
“In the meantime what he is trying to do is bolster his right-wing electoral basis because let's face it, he's been shaken to his roots; he has no credibility whatsoever on the international scene and for that matter neither does the prime minister of Canada (for supporting Israel ) at this point.”
“And what remains…now is simply [for Netanyahu to] try to use blackmailing tactics and basically these are the tactics of a drowning man, a desperate man who is looking at his own political demise and possibly, very possibly, a formal accusation of war crimes in front of the international criminal court.”
