The continuing war with Hamas has escalated significantly with the approval of a broad military strategy by Israel's security cabinet to seize complete control of the Gaza Strip, the proposal, which was unanimously approved and put forth by Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir, called for the permanent occupation of Gaza and the forced relocation of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians into the southern portion of the region, this approach marks a change from earlier brief invasions to a sustained presence meant to undermine Hamas's authority and alter the political climate in the area.

The authorized strategy calls for a multi-month-long, phased military campaign, in order to expand their geographical grip and eventually drive the Palestinian people southward, Israeli soldiers will start by stepping up ground operations in northern Gaza, the goal of this "conquest" strategy is to cut off Hamas's civilian connections and impair its ability to operate, according to Israeli authorities, humanitarian aid will be strictly regulated to keep it from helping Hamas, with supplies only going to specific southern regions.

Far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has openly called for the complete occupation of Gaza and the establishment of new Israeli settlements, emphasizing that there will be no retreat once ground operations commence. Smotrich declared that Israel will no longer fear the term "occupation" and intends to maintain permanent control over the Strip. He also advocated for the full displacement of Gaza’s population south of the “Morag Corridor,” a zone Israel established to isolate Rafah, signaling a policy that critics describe as ethnic cleansing.

Since the resumption of hostilities following the breakdown of a ceasefire in mid-March 2025, the conflict has exacted a devastating toll on Gaza’s population, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reports over 52,000 deaths, mostly civilians including women and children, with more than 118,000 injured, the United Nations has described approximately 70 percent of Gaza as a military "red zone" or under evacuation orders, leading to mass displacement and severe humanitarian crises.

The plan’s approval coincides with Israel’s mobilization of tens of thousands of reservists to bolster ground operations, reflecting the scale and intensity of the forthcoming offensive. Israeli officials have indicated that the expansion of military efforts is gradual, partly to allow for potential renewed ceasefire talks and hostage negotiations ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s upcoming Middle East visit. However, no timeline has been set for the full conquest, and the conflict is expected to continue fiercely for months.

Humanitarian organizations and international observers have condemned the siege and military actions as causing immense civilian suffering, Amnesty International has labeled Israel’s blockade and attacks as genocidal acts and war crimes, highlighting the deliberate use of starvation and denial of essentials as weapons of war, the UN and aid groups have criticized Israeli proposals to bypass established humanitarian agencies in delivering aid, warning that such measures threaten the neutrality and effectiveness of relief efforts.

Israeli policy against Gaza has undergone a significant change in this new stage of the conflict, moving from short-term military operations to a plan of long-term occupation and demographic change, with major ramifications for both regional stability and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the uprooting of Gaza people and the construction of Israeli settlements in the Strip represent a divisive and extremely contentious phenomenon.
