IAI's Conformal Airborne Early Warning & Control (CAEW) Landed This Morning at Le Bourget Airport Near Paris; to be Displayed at the 2009 Paris Air Show
ISRAEL - 14 JUNE 2009
The CAEW aircraft Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) Conformal Airborne Early Warning & Control (CAEW) landed this morning at Le Bourget Airport near Paris. The aircraft will be on display at the 2009 Paris Air Show.
ELTA Systems Ltd, an IAI group and wholly owned subsidiary, is the prime contractor, system developer and system integrator of two of the most advanced AEW programs: the G550 based CAEW Program for the Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD), and the IL-76TD based Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) Program.
The first CAEW aircraft produced, installed on a modified Gulfstream G550 business jet, was delivered in February 2008 to the Israel Air Force (IAF) and has already entered operational service. A second CAEW aircraft was delivered to the Israel Air Force (IAF) in May 2008 and is also in operational service. The G550 based CAEW is the second phase of an IAF strategic plan to upgrade its aging fleet of Special Mission Aircraft with a new cost effective fleet of G550 based systems.
The first phase was the deployment of Special Electronic Mission Aircraft (SEMA), which have been in operational service in the IAF since 2006. The SEMA is demonstrating excellent performance in providing a real time picture of the Electronic Order of Battle (EOB). The planned third phase is an advanced Air to Ground Mission Aircraft.
Nissim Hadas, IAI Corporate Vice President and President of ELTA Systems, noted: "We are very proud of the unprecedented accomplishment of the parallel development of two leading-edge AEW&C Systems. The CAEW Systems have already accumulated more than one thousand flight hours and are demonstrating outstanding performance in the IAF operational environment."
The CAEW is the third generation of Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) Systems developed by ELTA since the mid 1990s. ELTA is a world leader in AEW&C technology and an international pioneer in the development and application of Active Electronically Steered Array (AESA) radar technology.
Avishai Izhakian, Deputy General Manager of ELTA Systems' AEW Division flew in the CAEW to Paris. Izhakian noted: "I'm always thrilled to fly in the CAEW because of its unique flight performance. We reached 40,000 feet shortly after takeoff from Tel Aviv and cruised higher and faster than the commercial airliners do. Our team enjoyed the comfort of the operator cabin and within less than four hours we reached Le Bourget. We are expecting guests from the many countries invited to visit the CAEW."
The G550 CAEW long-endurance, high-altitude platform carries conformal dual-band AESA Radar, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), Electronic Support Measures (ESM) and an integrated Self-Protection System (SPS). The G550 CAEW includes a comprehensive Communication Suite designed for Network Centric Operations (NCO) which ensures flexible interoperability in any theater.
Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. is a recognized leader in the aerospace and defense industry and Israels largest industrial exporter. ELTA Systems Ltd., a group and wholly owned subsidiary of IAI, is one of Israel's leading defense electronics companies and a leader in Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), Early Warning Command and Control, Home-Land Security (HLS), Self-Protection and Self-Defense, and Fire Control applications.
