Taliban is movement of good "Islamist" according to some pushtoons. So you have to alienate the groups from zealots to mercs and one way to do that is pay them to fight some one else or not fight you. This is exactly what has happened with the Taliban. The Pakistani army had payed Taliban commanders NOT to fight Pakistani forces and the result was that some commanders took the money and went back to Afghanistan to fight and kill there. The ones that didn't take the pay out fight now against the PA. It may be that the Taliban prefer softer targets like PA and civilian rather than NATO forces.
LeT is banned but its other facade and other side of that coin is JuD. They are difficult target. Much like the RSS, the JuD is civil society movement meaning helping poor and educating ie... indoctrinating and influencing and front for funding terror although from my perspective and comparison its highly uncivil. Although the RSS is a lot less militant and more thugee culture mixed with idiologs. Hence the difficulty in apprehending them for quick justice, also a job for the police rather than military.

With the election turn out the RSS is emboldened. This is matter for the courts and the courts need to stand free from influence of the govt. These guys are not LeT that kills 200 people in a night. They are a domestic headache and someone's personal goons. You wanna go after them, then you'll need courts. However the riots they do, the more they do. The more they loose face and hence VOTES. Modi won because Rahul is a Jackass and coke head. However if drops the ball, Modi out soon. RSS is dangerous, but its their ideals and influence thats more dangerous. This is a quarter century process. It'll take generations that has schools, roads, healthcare, and good nutrition and employment. PA may see a short sighted mission, but I hope the Pakistani govt. sees the long term mission as critical instead of taking the management, talent and funding to Punjab or Karachi.

See heres Kashmir again. Why didn't the British divide Jammu or Kashmir? Because it was an princely STATE! They had a choice and before they had a say Pakistan got greedy. August 20: At least 12 militants and a 26-year-old Army officer were killed in a fierce gunfight on the Line of Control (LoC) in Bandipora District on August 20. Defence spokesman Lt. Col. J.S. Brar said it was the eighth infiltration attempt from across the LoC this year and the largest so far. In the gunfight, a Lieutenant was killed. "... we lost a gallant officer, Lieutenant Navdeep Singh, besides injury to two of our jawans [soldiers]," he said.

July 30-31: Two Army personnel were killed and three others injured as troops foiled a major infiltration bid by heavily armed militants in Furqiangali of Kupwara sector in Kupwara District on July 30. One of the injured soldier succumbed to injury on July 31.

July 15: SF personnel killed five militants of Pakistan-based LeT, including 'divisional commander' Abu Saqib, 'district commander' Abu Hamaad and 'deputy district commander' Omair, in a day-long gun battle in Kupwara District. While the dead bodies of four militants were recovered from the encounter site, another dead body was believed to be buried under the debris of the house where the encounter took place. A trooper was killed while five Army personnel, including a Captain, were injured in the encounter.

February 8: Army and Police shot dead three top HM militants, including a ‘divisional commander’, in an encounter inside a 60 feet deep nullah at village Manjoosh near Nachlana in the Khari area of Banihal tehsil (revenue unit) in Ramban District. November 25: Army and Police killed three Pakistani militants of LeT after a three day long operation at Marha in upper reaches of Sailan in Surankote tehsil (revenue unit) of Poonch District. Official sources said all three militants were killed after daylong heavy exchange of firing with troops. The militants were being searched since evening of November 23. The slain militants included Abu Ujefa, a ‘divisional commander’ of LeT, Abu Ali, the outfit’s in-charge for twin border Districts of Poonch and Rajouri, who was operating for last 15 years and was the longest surviving militant in the two Districts and Abu Ikramat. All three slain militants were Pakistanis affiliated with the LeT outfit, official sources said, adding Abu Ujefa was ‘commanding’ them after his predecessor, Abu Osama was killed. Sources said with the killing of these three militants the strength of LeT, especially in the border Districts of Rajouri and Poonch, has come down to 15. Only 25 to 30 militants were now active in the two Districts.

October 23: Three militants were killed as Army foiled an infiltration bid near the LoC in Uri sector of Baramulla District.

October 21: The Security Forces shot dead three militants of the JeM who were on a mission to target the Army Headquarters of 15 Corps at Badamibagh cantonment and another camp at Haft Chinar in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. This is the first militant attack in Srinagar since January 6 suicide attack by militants in Lal Chowk area of the City.

October 14: Three HM militants, including a self styled ‘battalion commander’ of the Pir Panjal regiment, were killed in an encounter with the SFs in the Shopian District.

October 1: Eight militants and a Policeman were killed in separate encounters in the State.

Army foiled an infiltration bid at Maidan Behak in the Machhil sector near the LoC in Kupwara District and killed five militants.

In addition, three militants and one Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel were killed in an encounter in the Chak-e-Akhal area of Kangan in Ganderbal District. Two other security force personnel and a civilian were injured in the gun fight which was going on till reports last came in.

September 29: A group of three to four LeT militants ambushed an Army patrol at Islampura between Dera Ki Gali (DKG) and Thanna Mandi in Rajouri District in which an Army soldier was injured. In the resultant encounter, all three militants were shot dead by Army and Police.

September 19: Two militants and a trooper were killed in an encounter at Dardpora near Paner in the Bandipora District. A civilian was also killed in the exchange of firing between the two sides, official sources said. One militant was killed in the same District on an unspecified date. The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants could not be ascertained immediately as the operation was still going on.

September 16: Army killed seven militants in two separate gun battles in Pulwama and Bandipora Districts. Five militants were killed in a fierce encounter with SFs in the Dudkalan forests of Tral area in Pulwama District, Defence Spokesman Lt. Colonel J S Brar told reporters. In addition, two more militants were shot near the LoC in the Gurez sector of Bandipora District. The militants were killed in the operation that has been going on since September 5. Although initially Army denied that it had suffered any casualty in the operation, sources on September 16 admitted that two troopers were also killed on the first day of the gun battle. Army has shot dead 30 militants in Kashmir Valley since the beginning of September, sources said, adding, "This includes 15 terrorists killed on the Line of Control and 15 in the hinterland."

September 13: Three militants, believed to be part of a major group of infiltrators, were killed in an encounter with Army in the Bandipora District.

September 8: Army killed seven militants in the ongoing operation in the Gurez sector of Bandipora District near the LoC, taking death toll in the four-day operation to 12.

September 5: Army killed seven militants in two separate operations in areas close to the LoC in Kupwara and Bandipora Districts. One Army trooper was also killed in the operation while another was injured. While four militants were killed in Baktoor area of Gurez sector in Bandipora District, Army troops eliminated three militants in the Hafruda forest area at Vilgam in the Handwara area of Kupwara District. Two Army troopers were injured in initial firing by the militants in Bandipora. One of the injured troopers, Havaldar J B Thapa, later succumbed to injuries. According to intelligence reports, a group of over 20 militants had sneaked into the Valley from Gurez sector last week and SFs have launched massive operations in the forest area of Bandipora District to track them down.

August 30: Army killed three more militants in the failed infiltration bid near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of Baramulla District, raising the death toll in the ongoing operation to nine.

August 29: Six militants were killed as Army foiled an infiltration bid near the Line of Control in Uri sector of Baramulla District. Sources said dead bodies of six militants could be seen lying on the ground where the gun battle was in progress, adding, number of the militants in the infiltrating group was around 15.

August 15: Two LeT militants and an Army trooper were killed while an Army Major was injured along with a SPO and a civilian in an encounter at Sheru forests in the Saran Wali area, about four kilometres atop Shahdara Sharief, of Rajouri District. One or two other militants, including Abu Zarar alias Doctor, continued to fight till the reports last came in. Bodies of the two militants killed in the operation were recovered from the forests. An intercept revealed their identity as Sajid Kashmiri and Abu Qamran. Sajid Kashmiri was believed to be a local while Qamran appeared to be a Pakistani. Though, exact identity of both slain militants is yet to be ascertained, sources confirmed that they were part of the LeT outfit which had attacked Army vehicles on August 11.

August 12: Three heavily armed militants were shot dead in an encounter with the Army in the forest area of Bandipora District. Official sources said though identification of the militants would take some time but they were believed to be affiliated with LeT, which has a strong presence in the area.

August 10: Militants attacked a Police post guarding Mohammad Abdullah, a leader of Democratic Party Nationalist, in the Sopore town of Baramulla District, killing all three Policemen on duty. The militants attacked the post at around 11pm (IST) by opening indiscriminate firing on the Police personnel at Yaseen Colony in the Armpora area of Sopore killing all the Policemen on the spot. Though a search operation was launched soon after, the militants managed to escape from the incident site. No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

July 20: One militant each of the LeT and HuM were believed to be killed in a gun battle with the SFs at Parray-Mohalla in the Hygam area of Sopore town in the Baramulla District. An Army trooper was also killed in the incident.

July 2-3: Four militants were killed as Army foiled an infiltration bid along the LoC in Nowgam sector of Srinagar, a defence spokesperson said on July 3. Troops observed a group of heavily-armed militants along the LoC late in the night of July 2. The intruders were challenged and in the subsequent gun battle, which continued through the night, four militants were killed, the spokesperson added.

June 28: Six armed foreign militants and three Army soldiers were killed in a gun battle that broke out along the LoC in the Kupwara.

May 19: Three HM militants, including self-styled ‘divisional commander’ and ‘district commander’ were killed in an encounter with SFs in the Lassi Daban village of Rajpora in Pulwama District. The slain militants were identified as Latief Tedwa, self styled ‘divisional commander’ for South Kashmir and ‘district commander’ of Pulwama Mohammad Rafiq Bhat. Both the slain militants were locals and residents of nearby Keller area in Shopian District. The identity of the third militant was being ascertained and preliminary reports said he was also a resident of Keller area and was known as Farooq Ahmad Khanday.

May 11: Three HM militants and a trooper were killed in a gun battle between the SFs and the militants in the Ganie Mohalla area of Sanzipora village, 20 kilometres from Handwara town in Kupwara.

May 7: Seven LeT militants and two Army personnel were killed in an over 24-hour gunfight, ending in the evening in the Shiekhpora forested area of Rafiabad in the Baramulla District, Police said.

April 2: Four more Pakistani militants of the LeT and an Army trooper were killed in another encounter with Army and Police at Sadda Darkeri forests in the Kalakote area of Rajouri District during day long gun battle.

With this ended the nearly seven-day-long battle between LeT militants and SF in Rajouri District. In all, 16 militants, militants, 15 of them Pakistanis, and five SF personnel died.

April 1: The Security Forces shot dead six top LeT militants, including five Pakistanis and a local, after an exchange of fire at Khabra forests near village Raa Bagla in the Taryath area of Rajouri District.

March 30 : Five militants, including four of LeT outfit, and four SF personnel were killed in two separate encounters in the Rajouri District.

March 27 : Army shot dead five militants, who were part of the infiltrating bid, near Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara District.

March 26 : A militant was killed in a gun battle with the Army near Hanuman post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of Kupwara District in Kashmir valley, taking death toll of the militants in the ongoing operation to three.

March 16 : Three civilians and three SF personnel were killed and eight others, including three SF personnel, injured by militants in the Srinagar and Baramulla Districts .

March 4: Four top HM militants and an Army officer, Captain Deepak Sharma, were killed during an encounter that lasted over 30 hours in the Dadsara village near Tral in Pulwama District.

February 23: Five top militants and three SF personnel, including an Army officer, were killed and three soldiers injured in a fierce 18-hour gun battle between the SFs and militants in the Sopore town of Baramulla District.

February 4: SFs shot dead three top ‘commanders’ of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) militant outfit, identified as Feroz Ahmed Mengnu (code name Dawood), a ‘supreme commander’ of HuJI and his two ‘deputy commanders’ Nazir Ahmed (code name Abu Furqan) and Mohammad Ishaq, in an encounter in Chichha hills in Kishtwar District. An Army trooper, Ravi Kant of 11 Rashtriya Rifles, was also killed in the encounter while a woman, identified as Haneefa Begum alias Babli, reportedly married to Dawood and actively working for HuJI outfit, was arrested.

January 14: Two self-styled ‘commanders’ of the HM outfit active in Reasi, Rajouri and South Kashmir, and an Army trooper were killed during a 15 hour long encounter in Kulgam District. The militants were identified as Adil Pathan and Khalid Hussain alias Tahir Inquilabi, both residents of Rajouri.

January 6-7: Suicide attack by LeT militants at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on January 6. The target was a CRPF camp but militants took refuge in Punjab hotel across the road when retaliated by SFs. Both the holed up militants were killed in a 22- hour gun battle. A Policeman and a civilian were also killed and at least 12 persons including three CRPF personnel and a photo-journalist were injured in the incident. While one terrorist was identified as Qari, a Pakistani national, the other one was named as Usman from Sopore.

2009

December 30: Militants shot dead four CRPF personnel in Sopore area of Baramulla District. Militants opened indiscriminate firing on a group of CRPF personnel who were part of a road opening party on Sopore-Bandipora road at Janwari, resulting in critical injuries to all the four CRPF personnel present at the spot. All of them succumbed to injuries. Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) claimed responsibility for the attack.

November 14: The Army foiled an infiltration bid by killing five militants in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

November 3: The Army foiled another infiltration bid near the LoC in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara District, killing three militants.

October 26: The SFs shot dead three top militants of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) outfit, including a ‘divisional commander’, during an encounter in the Shopian District of south Kashmir. The slain militants have been identified as ‘divisional commander’ for Pir Panjal Range, Saquib, and his two close associates Riyaz Poswal and Ishfaq Ahmad alias Adnan.

October 21: The Army and Police killed three top militants, including a ‘divisional commander’ of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) outfit at Daggan Top on the Mahore-Gool border in Reasi District. The slain militants were identified as ‘divisional commander’ Mushtaq Ahmed Bhat alias Maqsood, Mohammad Rafiq alias Murshad and Mohammad Arshad alias Tahir.

October 10 Army personnel shot dead three militants in an encounter and foiled a major infiltration bid near the LoC in the Sardari Nar area of Gurez sector in Bandipora District.

September 28: Two Pakistani LeT militants, who were allegedly planning suicide attacks in the Srinagar, and a woman were among four persons killed in an encounter in the Tral area of Pulwama District

September 23: Two militants, including one 'District Commander' of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) each and two Army personnel including a Major were killed during an encounter in Bandipora District.

September 12: The militants blew up a Police vehicle by triggering a massive car bomb, killing two Police personnel and a woman and injuring 10 others outside the Central jail in the Rainawari area of the Srinagar.

September 8: Three militants and one Army officer were killed as the Army foiled an infiltration bid near Line of Control (LoC) in the Sona Gali area of Mendhar sector in the Poonch District.

September 2: Five militants were killed in the Gurez sector of Bandipora District near the Line of Control as Army foiled a major infiltration attempt by the militants to sneak into the Kashmir valley from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (***).

August 25: A civilian, an Army soldier and a Pakistani militant were killed in an encounter between the SFs and militants at Hazam Nagar village in the Reasi District.

August 14: Army personnel shot dead four top ranking militants of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) in an encounter at Kund forests under Mahore Police Station in the Reasi District.

August 10: The Army killed four militants in an encounter in the Mahore area of Reasi District.

August 7: Three militants were shot dead in an encounter with the Security Forces (SFs) in the forest area of Bandipora District. The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants was not immediately known.

August 2: Four militants and an Army trooper were killed in an encounter in the Bangas valley of Kupwara District.

July 29: Two Army soldiers and a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant were killed in an overnight encounter in the Shopian District.

July 27: The Army foiled an infiltration bid in the Tangdhar sector near Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara District, killing three militants.

July 1: Three top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, including Zafarullah Parray, a Territorial Army trooper who had deserted his post along with three weapons on March 8, 2009, were shot dead by the Army, Police and CRPF in a joint operation at Kulhand in the Doda District.

June 22: Three militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit, including two commanders, were killed by the Army in an encounter at village Khour under the jurisdiction of Gulabgarh Police Station in Reasi District.

June 8: The Army foiled an infiltration bid in the Kupwara sector near LoC, killing three heavily armed militants who were equipped with modern gadgetry. An Army Major and soldier were also killed while another soldier was wounded in the operation which has been going on for more than three days now, the sources said.

June 5: Three hardcore militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) outfits were killed by the SFs during an encounter on June 5 at Mandrala under the jurisdiction of Gandoh Police Station on the Doda-Himachal Pradesh border.

May 26: Three militants of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen outfit were killed while two others managed to escape in two major encounters in the Doda and Kishtwar Districts.

May 22: The Army foiled an infiltration bid along the LoC in Kupwara District by killing three militants attempting to sneak into Kashmir Valley from across the border.

May 8: The Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants shot dead three persons including, one woman, at Bandara village in the Gulabgarh area of Reasi District.

April 21: Five persons, including a woman and a female child, were killed and seven others were wounded in an IED explosion under a vehicle at Sangla on the Surankote-Marha road in Poonch District.

April 18: A Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant, identified as Nissar Ahmed, was killed along with his woman associate and another accomplice at Dori Bhagla in Doda District.

April 2: A top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant, 'district divisional commander' Yusuf Gujjar alias Kamran, and his two associates were shot dead by SFs at village Sarawan in the Kishtwar District.

March 25: The encounter with Lashkar-e-Toiba militants near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara District is reported to have ended. The Army said that the major infiltration bid foiled near the LoC in Kupwara District was possible due to the accurate and absolute human intelligence provided by sources from across the LoC and within the Valley. "We had accurate and absolute human intelligence from across the LoC and from our side as well about this infiltration bid. As many as 17 militants have been killed in the encounter while eight soldiers including an officer made the supreme sacrifice," Brigadier General Staff of Army's Srinagar-based 15 Corps, Brigadier Gurmeet Singh, told reporters. He said most of the slain militants were foreigners and essentially affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Toiba.

2008

November 28: Official sources said that troops of Rashtriya Rifles and Bandipora Police launched a cordon-and-search operation immediately after receiving specific information regarding the presence of a heavily armed group of Pakistani militants at Gujjar Patti Shogbaba Sahib. During the search operation, an encounter occurred between the holed up militants and SFs that lasted for 15 hours. Sources said that five militants were killed when troops destroyed their hideouts in two residential houses of Lateef Khan and Bashir Khan besides two cowsheds. According to Police, all the five were Pakistani cadres of the LeT. They added that five AK-47 rifles, 13 magazines, cellular phones and a GPS set were recovered from the possession of slain militants.

November 18: An official spokesman said that three terrorists were killed in an encounter with the Army at Bali Behak in the Baramulla district. In the gun battle, one soldier was also killed. The security forces recovered three AK rifles, three magazines, 207 rounds, one pistol, two magazines, three rounds, five hand grenades, one wireless set, one mobile phone, two batteries, Rs 10,000 Indian currency and Rs 100 Pakistan currency from the slain terrorists’ possession.

November 8: In two separate counter-insurgency operations, the SFs shot dead eight top militants of the HM and LeT outfits—four each in the Doda and Poonch districts. The Senior Superintendent of Police in Doda district, Prabhat Singh, said that four hardcore HM militants, including a ‘district commander’, were killed during an encounter at Baleni Nullah in the Dessa area of Doda district.

Troops foiled an infiltration attempt by a group of six militants killing four of them in an encounter on the LoC at Sabjian in the Poonch district. While two other militants managed escape, trooper M.K. Thappa was injured during the encounter with the militants. The militants were believed to from the LeT outfit. Two AK rifles and a large quantity of ammunition and explosives were recovered from the slain militants

October 27: Six HM militants, including a foreign mercenary, were shot dead the by Army and police during an encounter at Nithan forest in Gokund of Kishtwar district. Four AK-47 rifles, two pistols, nine magazines, 180 rounds, 18 grenades, two radio sets, two mobile phones and a large quantity of other ammunition and explosives were recovered from the encounter site.

October 18: Army shot dead three HM militants during an encounter at forward Kas Kancha area in the Keri sector of Rajouri district. An Army Major was also injured in the encounter, which started when around eight militants were trying to infiltrate along the LoC. Miltants reportedly opened fire and lobbed grenades on troops who retaliated. Three AK rifles, three magazines, 74 rounds, one radio set, two mobile phones, letter heads of HM outfit and some eatables were recovered from the encounter site. This was sixth infiltration attempt in last eight days from twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri.

October 14: Two hardcore militants of the LeT and an Army soldier were killed in a fierce gun battle at Sangiot village in the Kalaban area of Mendhar tehsil (revenue division) in Poonch district. The encounter started when the Army and the police intercepted a group of militants about a couple of kilometres from the LoC while trying to infiltrate. One of the two militants has been identified as Zaffa Shah, a top LeT commander hailing from ***. The identity of his associate has not been ascertained so far but he too was believed to be a LeT activist. At least two to the three more militants were still hiding. Recoveries made from the encounter site so far include two AK rifles and two magazines.

October 11: Three LeT militants were killed and a police constable, Nazir Ahmad, was wounded during an encounter at Badli Beri near Sogam in the Kupwara district. The slain militants were Pakistani nationals, identified as Abu Hafiz, Hafiz and Saqib. Three AK rifles, six magazines, 232 rounds and a UBGL were recovered from their possession.

September 25-October 1: The fierce gun battle between the army and militants that had begun on September 25 in the Kagnan area of Kashmir ended after a week, killing 13 militants and a soldier. It is said to be the longest gun battle in recent years.

September 29: Four more militants were killed in the continuing gunbattle in Laanz forest area in the Kangan-Bandipore belt, raising the death toll to eleven militants and an Army official. The operation had reportedly started on September 26-night after security forces received information regarding the movement of a number of Pakistani and local militants at the high altitude ''Laanz'' area, between Bandipore and Kangan.

September 26 and 27: Seven militants were killed in a fierce gunbattle in Laanz forest area in the Kangan-Bandipore belt. The operation had started after security forces received information regarding the movement of a number of Pakistani and local militants at the high altitude 'Laanz' area, between Bandipore and Kangan. Five more militants were believed to be still trapped in the high-altitude terrain. Three soldiers sustained injuries in the encounter and one of them, Havildar Bahadur Singh succumbed to injuries while under treatment.

September 25: Three militants were killed during an ongoing encounter at Laanz in the upper ridges of Bandipore-Kangan belt. The encounter started after troops, on receiving information about a group of six militants being holed up in a hideout in the area launched a cordon and search operation and were fired upon by the militants.

September 22: Two militants and an Army personnel were killed at Kalsan in the Poonch sector.

September 21: At least two militants and a trooper were killed during a gun battle along the LoC in the Poonch district.

September 15: Two Army personnel and two SPOs were killed and one police man was wounded by three suspected LeT militants during an encounter at Tararan Wali dhok in the Surankot area of Poonch district. The militants, including two foreign mercenaries, however, managed to escape. The slain security force personnel were identified as Jaswant Singh, Chaman Vishnu Hari, Maqsood Hussain Shah and Mohammed Mahroof.

September 12: The Army and police killed three hardcore militants of HuJI, including a commander of the outfit, Mohd Akber Chechi, at village Bonda of Chatru in the Kishtwar district. The other militants were identified as Shabir Ahmed and Saifullah.

September 5: Three heavily-armed militants were killed as Army troops guarding the LoC foiled a major infiltration bid in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district.

August 27: Eleven persons, including three Army soldiers, five civilians and three militants, were killed while six others, including three soldiers, two civilians and a woman, were injured in Jammu as three fidayeen (suicide squad) militants, who had infiltrated in the early hours of August 27-morning from Kanachak sector, managed to hijack a truck at Gadla, and travelled more than 15 kilometers before taking shelter in a house at Chinore on the old Jammu-Akhnoor road taking nine persons hostage. The operation which started at about 7 AM concluded after approximately 18 hours. Two soldiers and three civilians were killed before the militants took shelter in the house of one Billoo Ram Bhagat at Chinore at about 6.45 am while two civilians, a Territorial Army soldier and three militants were killed and a woman was wounded in the gun-battle inside the house which concluded in the mid-night. 10 civilians were held hostage by the militants soon after they intruded into the house of Billoo Ram.

August 24: A 72-hour-long gun battle in the forests of Machil sector in the Kupwara district ended on August 24. An official spokesman said that on the third day of the operation, the troops launched search and cordon operations in the forest area of Machil sector. In the ensuing encounter, one more militant was killed raising the militants’ death toll in the three-day long gun-battle to 14. Three Army personnel, including Commanding Officer Colonel J. J. Joseph, have also been killed in the stretched encounter while four soldiers sustained injuries. This was the longest operation during 2008 in north Kashmir, the spokesman said.

August 23: With the security forces killing eight more militants in the Machhil sector of Kupwara district, the death toll of the militants in the two-day long operation in the area increased to 13. A Defence spokesman said that during the search and cordon operation in the forest areas of Machhil, the troops were fired upon by some militants in the early hours of August 23. The troops retaliated and in the ensuing encounter, eight militants were killed. This was the first major encounter with militants in the hinterland, the spokesman said, adding reports have suggested a steep increase in infiltration attempts by militants and LoC violations by the Pakistan troops.

August 22: Five militants and three soldiers, including a Commanding Officer of the Rashtriya Rifles, were killed when the troops foiled an infiltration attempt in the Nawanar area of Machail Sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district.

July 24: Five people of the same family, including four children, were killed and 18 persons were injured when militants lobbed a grenade at the crowded Batmaloo bus stand in the capital Srinagar. The victims belonged to a family of migrant labourers boarding a bus for Jammu for onward journey to their native places. The deceased were identified as 12-year-old Khushboo and her three brothers Adil (4), Qayoom (5), and Ajoob (8), all children of Mohammad Afroze of Bihar. The mother Rubina was also killed.

In the Doda district, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants shot dead four members of the family of a surrendered militant. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Raghubir Singh, said the militants intruded into the house of Ghulam Hassan Wani, the surrendered militant, in Bari Marmat village, and opened indiscriminate firing on the inmates killing three persons on the spot and injuring two others. Among the dead were Ghulam Hassan Wani, his wife Azeema Begum, 13-year old daughter Ashiva Bano and nephew Tauseef.

July 19: Ten soldiers were killed and 18 more sustained injuries when militants destroyed a bus of the security forces in an IED blast at Narbal Crossing in the outskirts of capital Srinagar. A Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) spokesman, Junaid-ul-Haq, contacted newspaper offices in Srinagar and claimed that militants of his organization had destroyed the Army vehicle, killing a number of soldiers.

The Army foiled an infiltration attempt while killing at least five militants in an encounter on the Line of Control in Kupwara district.

July 16: Two militants of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) outfit and a Special Police Officer of the Jammu and Kashmir Police were killed and approximately 22 security force personnel sustained injuries in an 18-hour-long gun-battle at Warpora village on the Sopore-Bandipora Road. Officials later said that the slain militants were identified as Hilal Ahmed Sofi of Warpora and a Pakistani militant, namely Ali Mohammad Raza.

SFs killed three unidentified militants on the outskirts of Bhaderwah town in Doda district. A police constable Sandeep Kumar sustained injuries in the incident.

July 4: At least five Army personnel were killed in an ambush by militants in the Kupwara district. They were identified as Ranvir Singh, Krishna, Manaram, Ruper Singh and Y. Munendra. In retaliation, troops shot dead one militant.

July 2: One JCO of the Rashtriya Rifles and 11 militants were killed in two encounters between militants and Army in the Kupwara district in the last 48 hours. Troops intercepted a 15-member group of armed militants while infiltrating into the Valley from Pakistan occupied Kashmir, close to Roshni Post on the LoC in Karnah sector during the night intervening June 30 and July 1. In the ensuing encounter, one JCO, identified as Dehan Singh, was killed. Six militants were killed in retaliation while others escaped.

Security forces also spotted another group of militants which was moving towards Bari Behak, close to Nishan Post on the Kupwara-Tangdar Road. In the consequent encounter five militants were killed.

July 1: An Army officer and two infiltrators were killed in an encounter near the Line of Control at Roshi post near Karnah sector.

June 29: Three militants and two soldiers were killed in a 48-hour-long gun-battle between the two sides at Kachpathir Mamar. Three AK rifles and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.

June 27: Two militants of the LeT outfit and two soldiers were killed in a daylong gun battle between militants and the Army at Khachpathri, near Kangan, in the Ganderbal area of Srinagar. Both the militants killed were unidentified but believed to be Pakistani cadres of the LeT. However, LeT spokesman, Abdullah Ghaznavi, said that five Army officials, including an officer, got killed. He claimed at 7:00 pm (IST) that none of the militants had got killed but said that the gun battle was still underway.

June 21: Four militants were killed by the Army as they foiled an infiltrating group’s attempt to enter into the the Jumagund area of Keran sector in Kupwara district.

Two LeT militants, Abu Shams and Abu Javed, and one Central Reserve Police Force constable, K. C. Sahu, were killed and four security force personnel wounded at Shopribagh in the Hazratbal-Ganderbal belt of Srinagar.

June 19-20: The SFs killed four militants in an encounter in the of Kupwara district.

June 19: Troops foiled a major infiltration attempt on the LoC at Salhutri in the Krishna Ghati area of Poonch district killing five suspected LeT militants while two others managed to escape. Reports said Pakistan army was also reported to have fired some shots on the Indian side.

June 13: Five security personnel, including an Army officer, Lt. Col. K. Rajendra, his two personal security officers and two General Reserve Engineering Force personnel were shot dead by militants in an ambush at Watsar village near Sinthan in the Kishtwar district. Militants also decamped with two AK rifles from the incident site. Police suspected that the number of militants was between six to eight, with half of them being foreign mercenaries. The LeT reportedly has significant presence in the area.

June 3: SFs shot dead three top militants of the LeT at Peer Gali in the Rajouri district. The militants were heading towards Kashmir from the Pir Panjal mountain when they were intercepted by the SF personnel and subsequently killed. The encounter was continuing till last reports came in as two more militants were holed-up in the area.

May 17: The SFs in an encounter at Laru Jageer in the Tral area of Pulwama district killed six JeM militants while at least four militants, two of them injured, managed to escape. Two of the dead militants were identified as the top wanted JeM 'district commander' Waseem Hassan Ahanger alias Qari Asif and his close associate Mohammad Yousuf Bhat alias Prince.

May 11: Four civilians, two soldiers and two militants of the LeT were killed in an encounter in the Samba town of Jammu. Among the slain civilians were chief photographer of Daily Excelsior Ashok Sodhi, a prominent leader from Samba Hoshiar Singh and his wife, and another woman. 16 SF personnel and two women were injured in the day long gun-battle. Official sources said that two militants wearing Army uniform intruded into the house of Hoshiar Singh, general secretary of Indian National Democratic Party, in Samba town at 5.58am (IST) by scaling the boundary wall. After killing Hoshiar Singh and his wife on the spot, the militants subsequently moved towards the Kaili Mandi area and took hostage three women and two children. In the consequent encounter, two soldiers, Aziz Ahmed and Atul Negi, and a woman were killed. At about 5pm, the SFs stormed the house where the militants were hiding and shot dead both of them.

April 19: The SFs in a day long gun battle killed four heavily armed militants in the Rang forest area, about 6-km ahead of Warnow in the Kupwara district. Three of the slain militants, residents of Pakistan occupied Kashmir, were identified as Amjad Bhai, Abu Saifullah and Irshad Ahmed. While Amjad Bhai was a top wanted ‘district commander’ of the JeM who had been operating in the Lolab area for the last six years, Abu Saifullah and Arshad were both LeT cadres.

April 9: The SFs killed four militants of the HM outfit in an encounter in the Ghulabgarh area of Reasi district. The Reasi Police and Rashtriya Rifles launched a joint search operation in the remote area of Mahore and in the ensuing two-hour long encounter, four militants were killed. The slain militants were identified as ‘area commander’ Mohammed Shafi alias Badshah Khan a.k.a. Gazi, Mohammed Rafiq alias Basharat, Talib Hussain and Munabar, all from the HM outfit.

SFs shot dead three militants, including a Pakistan national, in the Lolab area of Kupwara district. Three more militants of the group, however, managed to escape from the incident site. One of the slain militants has been identified as Ali Bhai, a ‘company commander’ of the Al-Badr Mujahideen, who, official sources said, was responsible for the killing of two constables in Kupwara on April 4.

April 1: Four persons, including two top commanders of the HM and an Army soldier, were killed at Dudu Mirhama in the Anantnag district. Senior SSP, Nitish Kumar, said the slain commanders were identified as 'divisional commander' Aslam Khan alias Zia-ur-Rehman and 'district commander' Javaid Ahmad Lone alias Nazar. In the encounter, Vijay Kumar of the Rashtriya Rifles and owner of the house, where the militants were hiding, Abdul Rashid Khan, were also killed, the SSP said, adding that Abdul Rashid Khan was an over-ground worker of the HM.

March 23: Three police personnel and a CRPF constable died in an encounter with militants on the outskirts of capital Srinagar in which they succeeded in killing Abu Faisal of Pakistan, a 'divisional commander' of the LeT.

March 19: The Doda district police and Army shot dead four militants of the LeT outfit, including a 'district commander', in an encounter at Gwari Shah under the jurisdiction of Gandoh police station. Two police personnel sustained injuries in the operation. The slain militants were identified as 'district commander' Imtiaz Hussain alias Abu Turab, Sadam Hussain, Suraf Nawaz alias Mehnaz and Sagir Ahmed of Pakistan.

March 16: SFs killed Hafiz Naasir, one of the most wanted militants and the Kashmir valley chief of the LeT, in an encounter at village Chatlura near Sopore town in the Baramulla district. Lt. Col. M. S. Kadam, the officiating Commanding Officer of Rashtriya Rifles (22 Battalion), and another soldier, identified as Pradeep Kumar, are reported to have died and four SF personnel injured in the encounter. Hafiz Naasir, a Pakistani militant, had been appointed sometime in 2007 as LeT operational chief in Kashmir after working in the Valley for about ten years. Deputy Inspector General of Police (north Kashmir), Dr. B Srinivas, described Naasir as the most wanted militant in the Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts.

March 6: Three members of a VDC member's family, including his father and two minor daughters, were killed while the VDC member himself, Mushtaq Ahmed, was injured along with four other family members in a suspected grenade attack on his house at remote Soni Top in the Handar village of Reasi district.

February 29: SFs killed four militants of the HM in an encounter at Saidpora in the Shopian district. They were identified as Sayyar Ahmed Thokar and Riyaz Ahmed Thokar alias Abu Jihad, Sayyar Ahmed Bhat and Mohammad Iqbal.

February 21: In a joint operation, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Army killed three militants of the JeM outfit in Kupwara district.

February 12: SF personnel shot dead three LeT militants in an encounter at village Sarhuti under the jurisdiction of Mendhar police station in the Poonch district. A fourth militant, however, is reported to have escaped from the incident site. With this, nine militants, including six infiltrators, have been killed in the past one week in Mendhar sector.

February 8: Three top LeT militants, suspected to be part of a group of seven infiltrators which had sneaked into the Indian side from Mendhar sector on February 2, were killed by the troops in an encounter at Kasbrari in the Poonch district. Three others had been killed on February 2.

February 2: Three top LeT militants, belonging to Pakistan, and two police personnel, including a constable and a Special Police Officer, were killed while soldier was injured as security forces foiled an infiltration attempt on Line of Control in the Ghani forests of Mendhar sector in Poonch district. The operation was still on till the reports last came in.

February 1: Four unidentified militants were killed by SF personnel during an encounter in their hideout at Drusoo Jagir area of Rafiabad in the Baramulla district.

January 30: With the killing of four militants of HM, including a ‘District Commander’, senior officials of Jammu and Kashmir declared the Kulgam district of south Kashmir as a "militancy-free zone". Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Zone), Shiv Morari Sahai, held a press conference at Bijbehara to declare the Kulgam-Arwani belt as a militancy-free area. He said that the security forces had laid siege to a cluster of residential houses at Batpora, near Arwani, and began search for a group of militants hiding in the locality. Four Kashmiri militants of the HM group were hiding at the house of one Mohammad Maqbool Malik. In the ensuing encounter, all the four holed up militants, identified as ‘district commander’ Sajjad Ahmed Bhat alias Tahir Maqsood, Firdaus Ahmed Wani alias Naseer, Javed Ahmed alias Weqas and Farooq Ahmed War alias Huzaib, were killed. Two AK-56 rifles were recovered from the incident site.

January 25: Bashir Ahmed Mir, the HuJI ‘commander-in-chief’ for operations across India was shot dead by police in the Doda district. Operating under the code-name "Hijazi," Pakistan-trained Mir is believed to have ordered a string of strikes across north and south-east India in 2007, including the court complex bombings in Uttar Pradesh, the bombing of the Ajmer Sharif shrine in Rajasthan, and the multiple bombings which took place in Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh.

January 23: Two Army soldiers and a militant were killed and four soldiers, including a Major, were injured in an encounter near Munawar Tawi between Sunderbani and Akhnoor sector in the Rajouri district.

January 14: Three militants, including two Pakistanis, are believed to have been killed in an encounter with the troops at Manzgam in the Kulgam district. The police, while confirming the death of two militants, said they were searching the area for more bodies. The slain militants were identified as Osman alias Chacha of Pakistan and Parvaiz Ahmad Wani alias Saqib, a resident of Shopian district.

January 5: Two soldiers and two militants were killed following a night long encounter at Awantipora in the Pulwama district. The encounter took place after a search party of SFs was attacked by the militants. Two Central Reserve Police personnel were injured in the encounter.

December 5: Two soldiers, Chuni Lal and Muzaffar Ahmed, and an equal number of militants affiliated to the LeT group died in an overnight gun-battle at Ladhermud in the Awantipora area of Pulwama district.

November 15: Five militants including four Pakistani cadres of the Harkat-ul Mujahideen and a lone Pakistani cadre of the Jaish-e-Mohammed and two soldiers were killed at Dharamwari in the Kupwara district in an encounter that lasted for over 10 hours.

November 12: Four Pakistani militants - two each of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba, were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Dooru in the Sopore area of Baramulla district. Three of the slain militants were identified as HuM "Deputy Chief" for Jammu and Kashmir, Qari Umar, and ‘commander’ Bilal Afghani and LeT cadre Abu Faris alias Daanish alias Shamsheer. One soldier was killed and four others were wounded in the encounter. .

November 10: Five militants and four SF personnel, including a Major, were killed in an encounter which lasted four days at Sadpora Mohalla in the Pattan town of Baramulla district. Commander of the 10 Sector Rashtriya Rifles, Brigadier K. A. Muthana, informed that all the five militants killed were foreign nationals affiliated to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba. Major V. S. Sandu and three soldiers were killed in the encounter which began on November 6-evening.

November 7: Three soldiers and two LeT militants were killed during an encounter in Sad Mohalla in the highway township of Pattan in Baramulla district. The encounter had begun on November 6 evening following reports of LeT militants hiding in two houses of the area. At least five soldiers, including a JCO, sustained injuries in the encounter. Three more LeT militants are suspected to have escaped from the cordoned locality.

November 4: Two LeT militants present in a hideout at Thathri in the Sonarthawa area of Doda district were killed following a four-hour long encounter. Both were identified as Showkat Ali Khan (code name Abu Zubair) of Gojru Thathri and Abdul Latif (code name Abu Zubair) of Loharthawa.

At Balana village in Sigri Bhatta area under the jurisdiction of Chatru police station of Kishtwar district, two HM militants including a commander of the outfit were killed after six hour long exchange of fire. The killed militants were identified as Babbar and Abdul Qayoom alias Gazali.

Two militants were killed in a ravine between Kainar and Khanbal in Machhil sector of Kupwara district. Both the killed militant, according to official sources, were members of the militant group which had infiltrated into the Valley through Machhil sector on October 31.

November 3: Two HM militants and a woman were killed in an encounter in Kashmir valley in the Neilpakipora area of Pattan in Baramulla district. A security force personnel was injured in the attack.

October 31: Moulvi Fayyaz Ahmed alias Alfa 3, a ‘district commander’ of the HM, his unidentified associate and a Special Police Officer, Shamas Din, were killed in an encounter between militants and SF personnel at Malikpura in the Chatru area of Kishtwar district . Sources said Moulvi Fayyaz Ahmed was among the longest surviving militants in the Kishtwar and Doda districts. He was reportedly active in militancy since 1992 and was involved in a series of subversive activities including killing, kidnappings and extortions. He was also instrumental in recruiting several local youths into HM.

October 16: SFs killed three militants of the LeT outfit in the in the Lancha area of Ramban district. While two of the slain militants were identified as Rafeeq and Liyaqat, the identity of the third was not known.

October 11-12: Two suicide bombers were killed and three paramilitary personnel wounded in a suicide attack on a CRPF camp near the Dal Lake in capital Srinagar. The two heavily armed suicide militants entered into the makeshift battalion headquarters of the CRPF on October 11. Police and CRPF personnel on October 12 killed the two suicide bombers. The spokesman of the LeT, Abdullah Ghaznavi, in a satellite telephonic conversation from Pakistan claimed that a suicide squad of his group had stormed the camp.

October 11: Five soldiers and two civilians were killed and six soldiers wounded in an IED blast carried out by the militants at Hamray in the Pattan area of Baramulla district. A purported HM spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack.

October 5-6: Three unidentified militants and a solider, Badal Hafda, were killed in the Karnah sector of Kupwara district near the Line of Control. Six more infiltrating militants and two soldiers were killed on October 6. This 9-member group of militants had been reportedly launched for infiltration into the valley at Aithmuqam Township across the LoC in Neelam valley of ***.

October 4: In an encounter between militants of the LeT and SFs at Gamroo in the Bandipora district, two militants, identified as 'divisional commander' Moosa alias Abu Wafa and 'chief operational commander' Qasim Bhatti, and a Junior Commissioned Officer of the Army, Subash, were killed. Moosa had engineered most of the attacks on Police and civilian targets in capital Srinagar in the last one year. He had also been instrumental in a number of grenade attacks and IED blasts in the Bandipora, Ganderbal and Srinagar districts.

October 2: Nine LeT militants, including the outfit's 'divisional commander' of the Tangmarg-Beerwah belt, Bilal Afghani alias Chhota Bilal, and two of his close associates, Mohammad Sultan Bhat alias Rayees Khan and Janbaz Afghani, were killed during an encounter between militants and SFs in the Tangmarg-Beerwah belt of Baramulla district. One officer of the Rashtriya Rifles (34 Battalion), Major K. P. Vinay was killed on the spot, while another one, identified as Major Dinesh Raghuraman, who was among five other soldiers injured, died of his injuries later. "They offered tough resistance for all 38 hours of the gun battle. They are all unidentified but we believe, they are all Pakistani cadres of Lashkar-e-Toiba [LeT]," informed Commander of Sector 12 of Rashtriya Rifles, Brigadier, Kuldip Singh. LeT spokesman, Abdullah Ghaznavi, confirmed in a satellite telephonic conversation from Pakistan that nine militants of his outfit were killed in the 38-hour-long gun-battle in Tangmarg. He claimed that the militants killed 12 soldiers, including two Majors, and wounded 15 others.

September 26-27: SFs killed three infiltrators after they sneaked into the Indian side from Pakistan occupied-Kashmir at Machil sector on September 26-morning.

September 26: Three infiltrators were killed by the SF personnel at village Battal Kanja in the Poonch district. One trooper, Lt P Sharma, was wounded in the incident. The slain militants were identified as Abu Ubaid, Abu Bakar and Abu Nadeem.

September 25: At least two LeT militants and a soldier, Varinder Kumar Sharma, were killed during an encounter that ensued after security forces launched a search operation at Khewri in the Rajouri district.

September 19: Three SF personnel, including one identified as Shri Kumar, were killed and 20 others injured when terrorists ambushed a security convoy along the Srinagar-Leh road in Srinagar district. Three army buses were also damaged in the attack. The LeT claimed responsibility for the attack.

September 18: Three HM cadres, Farooq Ahmed Khan Piswal alias Akram, Shahjahan Khan alias Waqas and Mushtaq Ahmed Khan alias Janbaz, were killed by SFs in the Kudara forest area of Baramulla district.

September 16: Troops foiled an infiltration attempt and killed three unidentified terrorists at unspecified place between Bhagat post and Guatam post in the Machhil sector of Kupwara district. Two other terrorists managed to escape.

September 13: Four LeT terrorists, including one 'district commander' Lal Din Gujjar, were shot dead by SF personnel during an encounter at Trinnar Nala area of Kishtwar district. Three others were identified as Umar Din, Kasih and Ghulam Qadir.

September 10: SFs killed four infiltrators close to the Line of Control in the Uri-Gulmarg sector of Baramulla district. Defence spokesperson, Lt. Col. A. K. Mathur, said the slain militants seemed to be foreigners but their identification was not immediately possible.

September 9: Four suspected foreign militants of the LeT outfit were shot dead by SF personnel and two others escaped after they managed to sneak from across the LoC into the Machil Sector of Kupwara district.

August 28: Security force personnel foiled a major infiltration bid when they shot dead five heavily armed terrorists in the Machil sector of Kupwara district near the Line of Control.

August 17-18: Five CRPF personnel were killed and six others sustained injuries when militants triggered an Improvised Explosive Device blast targeting their vehicle on the Kawany Link Road at Awantipora in Pulwama district on August 17. While two CRPF personnel died on the spot, three others succumbed to their injuries on August 18.

August 13: Terrorists lobbed a grenade targeting SFs patrolling the venue of the Independence Day (August 15) function at Nowpora in the Bandipora district but it missed the target killing three persons and injuring 16 on the roadside.

July 31-August 1: The Army foiled an infiltration attempt near Ghodetal in the Uri sector of Baramulla district by killing all the eight terrorists. In the gun-battle, Colonel V. Vasant, a Commanding Officer of 9 Maratha Light Infantry, and a soldier, Lance Naik B. S. Ganapat, were also killed and a soldier wounded. Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Kashmir), B. Srinivas, said that the entire eight-member group of LeT infiltrators had been neutralized by the SFs in a 60-hour-long operation.

July 29: Six people, including five women, were killed and 20 others sustained injuries when a blast occurred in a tourist bus from Gujarat on the main road outside the Shalimar Garden in the capital Srinagar. Senior Superintendent of Police, Syed Ahfadul Mujataba, and other senior Police officials maintained that it was not a grenade attack on the tourists' bus. Unconfirmed reports said the blast had occurred due to an accidental crash of the vehicle's air-conditioning system.

July 26: In the first Fidayeen (suicide squad) attack since October 2006, SFs killed both the militants at an encampment on the premises of Bhaba Atomic Research Centre at Zakoora on the outskirts of capital Srinagar. Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda, informed that two LeT militants made an unsuccessful attempt to sneak into a formation of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force at the defunct BARC facility at Zakoora. Both the militants, who emerged from a deserted orchard, lobbed hand grenades and opened gunfire on the pillboxes in the rear of the camp. Even as eight soldiers sustained injuries, the troops shot dead both the militants and also recovered two AK-56 rifles and three hand grenades from their possession. He said that one of the slain militants was identified as Feroz Ahmed Khan, a resident of Kangan in the Kashmir valley, and another was believed to be a Pakistani national. A LeT spokesman, Abdullah Ghaznavi claimed responsibility of the two-and-a-half-hour-long attacks and reportedly identified the slain militants as Feroz Khan alias Abu Muslim and a "guest militant" Abu Ma'az.

July 24-25: One SPO, Waahid, was killed and another sustained injuries in a gun-battle in which two militants of the Al Badr Mujahideen were holed up in the Rafiabad area of Baramulla district on July 24. Both the holed up terrorists and a civilian were killed in the overnight gun-battle on July 25. Officials said that both of them were unidentified though some reports identified one as Abu Talha. A girl, identified as Dilshada, also sustained injuries in the cross-firing. Official sources said that when the encounter was in progress, a 20-year-old shopkeeper, Tariq Ahmed Wani, died after being hit by a bullet at his home.

July 17: Troops confronted and killed four infiltrating militants at Mindi Gali, one kilometer inside the LoC, in the Rampur area of Uri sector in Baramulla district. All the four heavily equipped foreign militants were trained across the border and were tasked to strike terror and disrupt Independence Day celebrations in the Valley by indiscriminate IED blasts, sources said.

July 5: An infiltration attempt was foiled in the Trehgam sector of Kupwara district when troops shot dead four terrorists in an encounter near the Line of Control.

Three terrorists, including a Pakistani national, were killed in a 16-hour long gun-battle with the SF personnel at Saloora village in the Ganderbal district. The slain militants were identified as Yousuf Zia alias Iqbal of Pakistan and his Kashmiri associates Umar Rashid Tantray and Javid Khan, both residents of Ganderbal.

July 1: All the three top LeT terrorists, held up in a house since June 30-night at Dalli Nowpora in the Kulhand area of Doda district, were killed by the SF personnel. A police constable, Abdul Rashid, was killed in the operation while five others sustained injuries. Official sources said the body of one of the slain terrorists was recovered from the incident site while two others were buried in debris of the house.

June 28: Four militants are reported to have died in an ongoing operation of the security forces who intercepted a thick group of infiltrating militants in Tarang Bahak, close to the LoC in the Uri sector of Baramulla district. While defence authorities confirmed the death of four militants and maintained that the operation was "in progress" and details were awaited, official sources said that one solder was killed and two soldiers were wounded in the gun-battle.

Three terrorists of the LeT were killed in an encounter with the security force personnel at Harpora Salkoot village near the Army's headquarters of 28-Infantry Division in the Kupwara district. A woman, identified as Fehmeeda, is reported to have died in the crossfire. He disclosed that the militants, with a clear intention of launching a suicide attack on the Army formation, were wearing combat uniform, including military shoes and bullet proof-like vests.

June 26: Two SF personnel and a militant of the LeT, Ishtiyaq Ahmad Bhat, were killed in an encounter at Gamroo in the Bandipora district. The house of Ghulam Mohammad Shah, where the militants had allegedly taken refuge, was damaged in the incident.

June 24: Five cadres of the LeT and one Army personnel were killed and two soldiers wounded in an encounter which ensued after SF personnel challenged a group of infiltrators at Ismail Di Dori in the Karnah sector of Kupwara district. Havildar Chuni Lal, a resident of Doda district, who died in the encounter, had received the Vir Chakra in recognition of his gallantry in the Kargil War of 1999.

Three militants were killed by the SFs at Gowhallan, on the LoC in the Uri sector of Baramulla district. They slain militants were later identified as Mohammad Arif Ganai, Altaf Ahmed Sheikh and Fayaz Ahmed Khan.

June 18: Security forces killed three militants of the LeT, including 'divisional commander' Abu Furqaan, in the Beerwah area of Budgam district. The other two were identified as Amaar and Bilal Ahmed Dar alias Saifullah.

June 12: Three LeT terrorists and three soldiers were killed in a gun-battle in the Gagal forest area of Kupwara district. Five SF personnel also sustained injuries in the incident. One of the militant, according to official sources, had been identified as LeT's Kupwara "Financial Chief" Abu Moosa, a Pakistani national. Officials informed that Moosa had been continuously operating in Lolab valley since 2002. Three militants of the group managed to escape from the incident site.

June 4: SF personnel foiled an infiltration attempt, killing four heavily armed LeT terrorists at Kanga Gali in the Manjakote sector of Rajouri district. One Army personnel, identified as Sumit Dogra, was killed and another, Kuldeep Raj, injured in the abortive infiltration attempt. This was the fifth infiltration attempt which was foiled by Army in the Rajouri and Poonch districts last fortnight.

June 1: Two soldiers died and 16 others inured in an encounter with two suicide squad (Fidayeen) cadres of the LeT following their attack on the Army convoy as well as STC of the J&K Police at Sheeri in the Baramulla district. Both the terrorists were also killed in the gun-battle. LeT spokesman, Abdullah Ghaznavi claimed that the incident at Sheeri was his group’s Fidayeen attack. He claimed that five police personnel and six soldiers of the army were killed and 15 more injured and confirmed that both the suicide squad cadres were killed in the operation.

May 30: Terrorists shot dead a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Shailey Singh, inside the house of a State Forest Corporation employeeat Udrana in the Doda district and escaped. However, a LeT ‘divisional commander’, Abu Umar, was reportedly trapped by police in a house. Sources said the terrorists had sheltered in the house belonging to Shabir Ahmed alias Billa alias Sabba, and his brother Shakoor Ahmed alias Shanku at Udrana, who were later arrested.

Foiling another infiltration attempt, SFs shot dead three terrorists, believed to be foreign mercenaries of the LeT outfit, during an encounter at Sabra Gali on the LoC in the Balakote sector of Poonch district.

May 24: SFs recovered the dead bodies of three HM militants from Ramsu in the Ramban district. The militants, who were believed to have been killed during Operation Bakrola, between March 6-21, 2007, were identified as Inayat Hussain alias Sher Khan, Mohammed Iqbal alias Shaheen, and Mohammed Farooq.

May 22: Four militants, Nauroz Ahmed Lone, Assad Imran alias Hamza (believed to be a Pakistani cadre of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen [HuM]), Nazir Ahmed Sheikh alias Aftab of the HuM and Liaquat Ahmed Lone alias Fighter Khan alias Kaka Driver of the Al-Badr, were killed in an encounter with the troops at Chak Matribugh village in the Pulwama district on.

Two JeM cadres, identified as ‘district commander’ Waseem Bhai of Pakistan and Arshid Ahmed Dar alias Umar, were killed by the SF personnel In another encounter at Kesrigam in the Kakapora area of Pulwama district. Official sources said that a soldier, Rajesh Chaudhry of the Rashtriya Rifles, also died in the gun-battle.

May 11: Three soldiers, Dileep Singh, Ravi Kumar and Hari Prasad, who were wounded in the encounter with a group of terrorists at Lashidat near the Line of Control in the Kupwara district on May 8, succumbed to their injuries on May 11.

May 9: Three Pakistani cadres of the LeT group are reported to have died during an encounter with the SFs at Dardharey village in the Kupwara district. One Kashmiri militant, namely Bilal Ahmed Mir, and a guide, identified as Abdul Khaliq, were arrested from the incident site.

May 8: Seven terrorists and one soldier were killed during an encounter with a group of seven infiltrating militants near Gulab Post in the Lashdat Nar area, close to the Line of Control, in Kupwara district. Three other soldier sustained injuries in the incident.

April 29: Four militants of a recently infiltrated group of LeT cadres were killed on in a joint operation by the Rashtriya Rifles and Kupwara Police in the Kandi forest area of Kupwara district. However, two militants, one of them injured, of the group managed to escape from the incident site.

April 28: Three LeT militants were killed during an encounter with troops of Rashtriya Rifles and police at village Panjan in Dessa area of Doda district. One of the militants was identified as Mubarak Ali of Dessa. Another unidentified militant is believed to be a Pakistani national.

April 22: Three top HM cadres, including a deserter SPO, were allegedly killed by LeT in the remote and hilly area of Kither under the jurisdiction of Gandoh police station in Doda district. The slain militants were identified as Abdul Qayoom, Sajjad Ahmed and Shabir Ahmed. While Abdul Qayoom was a deserter SPO, Sajjad and Shabir were active in militancy for the last two years. Official sources said the trio was allegedly strangulated by Pakistan-based militants of the LeT as they were planning to surrender before the security forces.

April 16: Terrorists made an abortive attempt on the lives of two engineers with IRCON, the construction wing of the Indian Railways, killing their guard near a railway track at Naina Bhatpora in the Pulwama district. The Al-Mansooran, a front outfit for the LeT, claimed responsibility for the attack on two IRCON engineers. The two engineers — Hilal Ahmed and Kishen Kumar — escaped unhurt. IRCON is involved in the laying of tracks and setting up other infrastructure for the Qazigund-Baramulla railway line project.

April 13: SF personnel shot dead five top cadres of the LeT, JeM and HM in an encounter at Navapachi area in the Doda district. SFs launched a search operation at Tatta Pani in Navapachi in the early hours of April 13 after securing information that five top commanders of three outfits were holding a joint meeting to co-ordinate their activities and step-up militancy in Doda district. As the troops reached close to the hide-outs the militants opened firing, which was replied by the SF personnel and in the consequent encounter all five militants were killed. Out of five, identity of three of them was established as Imtiyaz, Abu Buzana and Gulfam, all commanders of three different outfits.

April 8: SF personnel killed six Bangladeshi nationals and arrested 11 others from three border villages in the Arnia sector of Jammu. However, no incriminating recoveries were made from any of the killed or arrested Bangladeshi nationals, official sources said. At least four infiltration attempts occurred in the Arnia sector with infiltrators trying to breach fencing on the border to cross into the Indian side.

April 6: Three Al Badr militants were killed during an operation at Gousiya Colony, near Ishbar in the Nishat area in the outskirts of capital city of Srinagar. Operation was launched after a tip off of the presence of the militants in the house of a vegetable vendor. Two police personnel were injured during the encounter. The slain militants have been identified as Akhtar Pahalwan alias Imran of Pakistan, Gulzar Ahmed of Shopian and Rameez Ahmed Malla of Pulwama.

April 1: Two cadres of the HM, identified as Saifullah, a ‘tehsil commander’ and Faisal, a ‘section commander’, and a personnel of the Territorial Army, Ravinder Kumar, were killed in an encounter at Kushal in the Chatru area of Doda district.

March 30: Militants struck at Panglar village under the jurisdiction of Dharamshal Police station in Rajouri district killing five labourers, including three members of a family, and injuring four others. Five labourers, who were killed in the attack, were identified as Sanjay Kumar, Chaman Lal, Mohinder Kumar, Baldev Kumar and Rashpaul Singh. Four people who were injured in the incident were identified as Subash Chander, Babu Ram, Raj Kumar, and Ranmeet.

March 20: In a major cordon-and-search operation at Chhotimarg hamlet in the Divar forest area of Lolab valley in Kupwara district SFs killed four militants of the LeT outfit who were hiding at the residence of one Abdul Aziz War. The militants were identified as Riyaz Ahmed Wani and Maqsood Ahmed Ganai from Kashmir; and Abdur Rehman and Abu Huraira, from Pakistan. An Army officer, identified as Captain Harshan, was killed during the encounter. One soldier sustained injuries in the incident.

March 10-11: Three militants are killed in the encounter between militants and SFs at Naibugh village in the Tral area of Pulwama district. The militants are identified as Altaf Ahmed Khan alias Raashid, Altaf Ahmed Shah alias Sahil and Shabir Ahmed Bhat alias Asif Jameel of the HM.

March 7: In a major combing operation in Wudar Balla forest cover of Rajwar in the Kupwara district security forces claimed to have killed four Pakistani cadres of the LeT.

February 27: Two soldiers of the Rashtriya Rifles and an unidentified militant are killed and a soldier wounded in the Mawar area of Kupwara district. The militant killed in the encounter is unidentified though he is believed to be a Pakistani LeT cadre.

February 23: Two Pakistani HM militants and an Army personnel are killed and two other soldiers are wounded in a day long encounter during which militants fled from one house to another in populated village of Hasblot and Raina Mohalla in the Thannamandi area of Rajouri district. The slain militants are identified as Shahid Rasool alias Abu Mavia and Abu Umar alias Khalid while the Army personnel killed is identified as Anant Kumar. One AK-47 rifle, one AK-56 rifle, five AK magazines, 73 rounds, one grenade, two pouches, three mattress sheets, eight diaries and two mobile telephones are recovered from the incident site.

February 8: Militants ambushed a security force patrol and killed four soldiers of the Rashtriya Rifles in a late night ambush, in the Tral area of Pulwama district in south Kashmir. Six to eight soldiers sustained gunshot wounds. A civilian, namely Mohammad Afzal Rather, was also killed in the crossfire.

January 23: A CRPF spokesperson said that terrorists detonate an IED at Probabad on the Awantipora-Panzgam road in Pulwama district when two CRPF vehicles were passing the area. He said three CRPF personnel, identified as Thomas, S. K. Misra and Ganesh, died in the blast. HM claims responsibility for the attack.

January 17: SF personnel kill at least three cadres of the HM, identified as Sheeraz alias Muzamil, Muddassar and Riyaz,, during an encounter at Augam in the Kulgam area of Anantnag district.

January 13: Three people, including two militants of the LeT and a civilian, are killed during a joint search operation conducted by SFs at Sumbler in Bandipora in the Baramulla district.

January 4: Security force (SF) personnel killed four top commanders of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami during an encounter at Barf Wali Gali in the Gool area of Udhampur district. They were identified as Abu Salem, a 'divisional commander' of the Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami, Abu Sufian, a 'district commander' of the JeM, Abu Billal, an 'area commander' of JeM, all three Pakistanis and Mohammed Sharief alias Abu Hamza, a 'group commander' of JeM.

2006

December 28: SF personnel laid an ambush in the Banwali area, close to the Line of Control in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, and in the ensuing encounter kill three unidentified terrorists of the group.

December 18: Four of the six terrorists, who were reportedly trapped in three separate operations at Bandipora and Lolab, have been killed by the SFs since December 18-evening. Sources said that SF operation ends with the death of both the holed up terrorists at Kota Satrena in the Bandipora area of Baramulla district. They are identified as Saifullah and Khalid alias Zubair, Pakistani cadres of the JeM.

December 9: LeT 'area commander' Abu Salam, a soldier, Varinder Singh, and a civilian, Mohammed Sharief, were killed and two soldiers wounded during an encounter with a group of terrorists at village Banola in the Mendhar area of Poonch district.

November 30: Three top cadres of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen HM, including 'battalion commander' Shabir Ahmed alias Tufail, were killed by the SFs during an encounter at village Deval in the Mahore area of Udhampur district.

November 25: The overnight gun-battle between terrorists and SFs at Rampur in the Bandipore area of Baramulla district claimed the lives of four soldiers of 2-Grenadiers and one Police Constable, even as two more soldiers were left wounded and all the holed up terrorists managed to escape from the cordoned area. One civilian, Bashir Ahmed Shah, was also killed in the operation.

Four soldiers and a terrorist, Sayyar Ahmed Chopan alias Hamaas Bhai, a 'district commander' of HuM, were killed during an encounter that ensued after SFs launched a cordon-and-search operation at Neeldora village in the Shopian-Kulgam belt of south Kashmir.

November 23: Police shot dead three top LeT cadres, identified as Mudasir (code name Hanzla), Mohammed Irfan (code name Abu Sohail) and Mohammed Ismail (code name Umer), in an encounter at village Hunzar under the jurisdiction of Marwah police station in Doda district.

November 15: Even as a search is still underway for three terrorists, seven of their freshly infiltrated associates are killed by the SFs in the forests of Kupwara district. One soldier is reported to have died and four others sustained injuries in the operation. Almost all of them are believed to be Pakistani cadres of the LeT. SFs had launched a major combing operation in the Warsun-Gulgam forests on November 13-evening.

November 13: Two Army personnel, Sepoy Daya Singh and Sepoy Jagtar Singh, and an unidentified terrorist are killed and three SF personnel are injured in an encounter at Malla Parot in between Khour and Sunderbani sector of Jammu district.

November 10: Six persons, including four girls, are killed and over 50 others wounded, when terrorists hurled a grenade outside a mosque at Tahab village in the Pulwama district. The incident occurred around 1.20 p.m., when people were going to the mosque along with cleric Moulvi Abdur Rasheed Dawoodi. Belonging to the Barelvi school of thought, he was specially invited to deliver a sermon. Deputy Inspector-General of Police (South Kashmir) Hemant Kumar said that it is the handiwork of the HM.

November 8: SF personnel kill three LeT ‘commanders’, identified as ‘area commander’ Shabir Ahmed alias Abu Bakar, Ashiq Hussain, a ‘section commander’ and Saifullah, ‘area commander’, at Draman in the Gandoh area of Doda district.

November 4: Terrorists shot dead four members of a family, including three women, in their house at Maglogi in the Ramban area of Doda district.

October 27-28: Three unidentified terrorists and a soldier, identified as Lance Naik Jyoti Parkash, are killed during an encounter between SFs and terrorists at Kasblari in the Poonch district.

October 24: Police in the Doda district shot dead two cadres of the HM outfit, 'divisional commander' Mushtaq Ahmed and 'section commander' Abdul Lateef, in an encounter at Keen Dhar in the Gandoh area of Doda district. A porter, who was carrying arms and ammunition of the HM cadres and is killed in the operation, is identified as Mohammed Issaq. A Special Police Officer is reportedly wounded in the incident.

October 22: SFs foil an infiltration bid in the Uri sector of Baramulla district and shot dead three Pakistani intruders.

October 21: Three militants are killed during a shootout that occurred in Nagrin Bahak village of north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

October 18: The Army foils an infiltration attempt by killing four terrorists at Sona Pindi near the Line of Control in Kupwara district.

October 13: Two cadres of the HM, Azad Ahmad of Shopian and Shakeel Bhai alias Abass of Gujranwala in Pakistan, and a SF personnel are killed and a SF personnel wounded in a 24-hour-long gunfight at Allayalpora village in the Shopian area of Pulwama district.

October 10: Four SF personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer, and a LeT 'area commander', Abu Jabran alias Ali, are killed and another soldier injured during an encounter at village Chamrerh in the Surankote area of Poonch district.

October 8: SF personnel foil an infiltration attempt by a group of suspected LeT cadres killing four infiltrators on the LoC in the Sabjian sub sector of Poonch district. One soldier is also killed in the operation while a Captain is injured.

October 7: Army personnel kill five Pakistani militants trying to cross over to Indian side into the Kanzaluan area along the Line of Control in Gurez sector in the Baramulla district. Two army personnel are also killed during the operation.

October 5: With 10 fatalities – five JKP personnel, two CRPF soldiers, two terrorists and one civilian - the overnight gun-battle between the holed terrorists and security forces in the business hub of Budshah Chowk in capital Srinagar ended in the afternoon. Approximately 30 people sustained injuries in the suicide attack. Director General of JKP, Gopal Sharma, said that the 27-hour-long operation ended with the toll of 10 human lives after both of the Fidayeen (suicide squad), who occupied the second floor of New Standard Hotel for about 20 hours, were shot dead by Police and CRPF. Spokesman of the Al-Mansoorian outfit, Aamir Mir, identified the two terrorists killed as Tariq Ahmed Bhat and Mohammad Mushtaq.

September 26: An Army Captain and two terrorists are killed during encounter at Bandipora in the Baramulla district.

September 24: Foiling a second infiltration attempt in the last four days, the Army shot dead four heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists at Trikanjan forest in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, raising the number of terrorists killed along the LoC in the area to eight.

September 21: SF personnel kill a group of four infiltrating terrorists, believed to be Pakistani cadres of the LeT, who were equipped with state-of-the-art communication equipment in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, close to the LoC. One of them is identified as Mozam Ali Qureshi, a resident of Lahore in Pakistan.

September 19: SF personnel kill three LeT terrorists in an encounter at Tanta Draman in the Gandoh area of Doda district, while another cadre manages to escape during the five-hour gun-battle. They are identified as ‘tehsil commander’ Mohammed Sadiq alias Abu Haider, Mohammed Imran alias Abu Sofian and ‘section commander’ Umar Pathan, a Pakistani.

September 16: Three JeM militants are killed during a cordon-and-search operation at Gurwatan Sarpathri in Pir Panjal foothills in Shopian area. One of the killed militants is believed to be a Pakistani national.

September 14: A LeT ‘commander’, Aijaz Ahmed, involved in the April 30, 2006-massacre of 13 Hindus was shot dead by the SFs in an encounter at village Lower Punara in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district. A Special Police Officer, Noor Alam, and a Village Defence Committee member, Mohammed Abbas, also died while six SF personnel are wounded in the gun-battle.

September 4: A Major and two soldiers of the Rashtriya Rifles are killed and a civilian wounded in an encounter with the LeT terrorists at Ayatmulla village in the Baramulla district. Two Pakistani cadres of the outfit also died in the gun-battle.

August 31: SFs kill two cadres of the LeT, identified as Zaheer Hamid alias Abu Jarar Askari and Musaib (both Pakistan nationals), at Bonibagh village in the Srinagar district, on the Srinagar-Leh national highway. A soldier also died in the encounter.

August 17: Three LeT terrorists, two of them Pakistanis including the one who was involved in last week’s killing of a woman and her three children at Harra, Gool, are killed by the troops at Dachan in the Gool area of Udhampur district.

Two soldiers sustain injuries in the incident. Terrorists attack personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF at three places in the capital city of Srinagar on with silencer-fitted pistols, killing two of them and injuring two others. One of the injured succumbs to his injuries later. Inspector General of Police (Kashmir), S M Sahai, said that a freshly inducted JeM module has carried out the attacks.

August 16: At least five infiltrating terrorists, believed to be Pakistani cadres of the LeT and Al-Badr Mujahideen and a soldier are reported to have died in an encounter near the LoC in the Machhil sector of Kupwara district. Two soldiers, Himayatullah Khan and Ramachandran, sustain injuries.

August 11: Suspected Let cadres shot dead three members of a family, including a woman and her two children, 14-year old daughter Meena and six-year old son Neelam Singh, in the house of a neighbour Abdul Samad at village Harra in the Udhampur district. The family was reportedly the lone Hindu family in Harra village.

Two Pakistani cadres of the LeT, identified as Abu Katal, a ‘district commander’ and Abu Usama Umar, are shot dead by the security force personnel at Gursai in the Mendhar area of Poonch district. A civilian, identified as Lateef, is killed and two Police constables and an Army personnel are injured during the cross-firing.

August 7: Two terrorists and a soldier are reportedly killed and three persons held hostage are rescued in a gun-battle at Shirpora in the Anantnag district.

August 5: Three terrorists are killed during an overnight gun battle between security forces and terrorists at Helmetpora in Kupwara district, including one, identified as Abu Usama, resident of Pakistan.

August 2: SF personnel shot dead two cadres of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami, ‘section commander’ Ashraf Ahmed Malik alias Khalid Zubair and Izaz Ahmed, at village Kochal in the Doda district. A soldier, Jitender Singh, is reported to have died during the encounter.

August 1: A Police Constable and two terrorists, including a Pakistani national, are killed at Chidipora in the Pulwama district.

July 31: Four Pakistani infiltrators are killed during an encounter with the SF personnel near the LoC in Gurez Sector of Baramulla district.

July 28: A Pakistani Major, identified as Mohammad Hyder Turkey alias Abu Bilal of 9 Baloch Battalion of the Pakistan Army, is reportedly killed along with two terrorists, Mohammad Qasim Khan alias Abu Usman and Mohammad Ayub Khan alias Islam, both residents of Pakistan’s Punjab province, as troops foiled an infiltration attempt at the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.

July 26: Three SF personnel are killed during a cordon and search operation launched at Renipora village in Shopian area of Pulwama district when a group of five LeT terrorists fired at them and managed to escape.

July 21: A top terrorist of the LeT, Irshad Ahmed Bhat, is killed along with three other terrorists at Sursunoo in Kulgam area of Anantnag district.

July 20: Troops of Rashtriya Rifles raid a house at Sursunoo village in the Anantnag district and killed four LeT terrorists.

July 12: Two girls and two boys of the Hindu community are killed and two others are injured in a terrorist attack on two families at village Mangnar in the Poonch district.

July 11: Eight persons are killed and 43 others sustain injuries in a series of grenade attacks by suspected LeT cadres in the capital Srinagar.

July 8: Five persons are killed and 42 others are injured in a terrorist attack outside a shrine at Kulgam. Senior National Conference leader and former legislator Ghulam Nabi Dar is among the dead, while former Minister Sakeena Itoo suffered minor splinter injuries in the attack.

June 30: Rashtriya Rifles officer, Lt. Colonel Vinay Rao Chauhan, and two civilians are killed in an exchange of fire between troops and terrorists in a shopping complex at Bandipora in the Baramulla district. Subsequently, troops set ablaze the building and the holed up terrorist, identified as Abu Talha Hazarwi, a Pakistani cadre of the LeT, is killed, while one of his accomplices managed to escape.

June 29: Troops kill eight infiltrators, suspected to be Pakistani cadres of the LeT outfit, in an ambush at Hema on the LoC in the Keran sector of Kupwara district.

June 26: Terrorists shot dead three civilians, identified as Mohammad Iqbal Khan, Mohammad Shafi Malla and Manzoor Ahmad Wani, in the Bandipora area of Baramulla district.

June 12: Unidentified terrorists in combat uniform shot dead nine Nepalese and Bihari labourers and a soldier in broad daylight near Yaripora in the Kulgam area of Anantnag district.

June 6: Security forces intercept a group of infiltrating terrorists and killed at least eight of them near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Machhil sector of Kupwara district. The troops recovered eight AK assault rifles, ten magazines, 160 rounds of AK ammunition and ten grenades of "Pakistan make" from the incident site.

May 25: Four tourists - two children and two teenagers - from Gujarat are killed and six others sustain injuries when terrorists hurled a grenade at a tourist bus on the outskirts of Srinagar, capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

May 21: Two terrorists in police uniform attack a rally of the Youth Congress at Sher-e-Kashmir Park in the capital Srinagar, killing three political activists and two police personnel, minutes before the scheduled arrival of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Inspector General of Police (Kashmir), K. Rajendra Kumar, is among 25 persons injured in the attack which is claimed by the LeT and Al-Mansoorian. The two terrorists are subsequently killed in an encounter.

May 16: Four top HM terrorists, including 'tehsil commander' Arshad Gujjar, are killed in an encounter with the troops at Akhran in the Banihal area of Doda district.

Two terrorists of the LeT outfit and a Junior Commissioned officer of the Army are killed in an overnight gun-battle at Nunmai village in the Kulgam area of Anantnag district.

May 13: Two BJP activists are killed and 41 others sustain injuries in a grenade attack on a procession being taken out jointly by the BJP workers and the people, who had shifted from Kulhand after the killing of 19 Hindus on May 1, at New Bus Stand in Doda town.

May 3: Three LeT terrorists, identified as Omair, Kubair and Suleman, and an equal number of soldiers are killed in an encounter at Hayan Palpora in the Kangan area of Srinagar district.

May 1: Suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists kill 22 Hindus in the mountain hamlets of Kulhand and Tharva in Doda district and 13 at Lalon Galla, a high-altitude meadow above the town of Basantgarh in the Udhampur district.

April 14: Terrorists trigger out seven grenade blasts in the capital city of Srinagar, killing five civilians and injuring 44 persons, including 14 SF personnel. A local news agency, Current News Service, reported that four terrorist groups – Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen (JuM), Al-Mansooran, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and J&K Islamic Front - claimed responsibility for these blasts.

April 9: Terrorists shot dead three members of a family, including two brothers, at village Challad in the Udhampur district.

April 2: Unidentified terrorists are reported to have shot dead Mohammed Afzal, a Councillor of Sopore Municipal Council, at Sopore in the Baramulla district. Afzal had won the 2005 municipal elections as an independent candidate backed by the Congress party.

March 5: An Army Major, a soldier and a terrorist were killed and another soldier was injured in an encounter at Deri Lalyot in the Manjakote area of Rajouri district.

February 10: Two Army personnel and a terrorist are killed in an encounter at village Kund in the Mahore area of Udhampur district.

January 23: Two personnel of the Special Operations Group of Kupwara Police and at least two terrorists are reported to have died in a gun-battle at Didikote village in the Vilgam area of Kupwara district.

2005

December 16: Two terrorists, including Sangar Pathan, a ‘divisional commander’ of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, and a soldier are killed in an encounter at Gurnuwali in the Darhal area of Rajouri district.

November 23: In a Fidayeen attack at Hawal in the outskirts of capital Srinagar, two terrorists and three SF personnel are killed while seven persons are wounded when the former stormed a CRPF company headquarters.

November 16: Four civilians are killed and 72 persons, including legislator and former Minister Usman Majeed, sustain injuries in a powerful car bomb explosion near the main entrance of the J&K Bank Corporate Headquarters in Srinagar. The Al-Arifeen, believed to be a front outfit of the LeT, claimed responsibility for the blast.

November 15: Six persons are killed and 90 others sustain injuries when terrorists targeted the former Minister and PDP leader Ghulam Hassan Mir’s public meeting with a grenade explosion at Tangmarg in the Baramulla district. The PDP leader and five of his Personal Security Officers, a Deputy Superintendent of Police and Station House Officer of Tangmarg are among those wounded.

November 14: Two soldiers of the CRPF and an equal number of civilians are killed while 17 persons, including a Japanese journalist, sustain injuries when terrorists carried out a Fidayeen attack at the business hub of Lalchowk in Srinagar. The Al-Mansooran and J&K Islamic Front has claimed responsibility for the attack.

November 2: A few hours before the swearing in of Ghulam Nabi Azad as the tenth Chief Minister (CM) of Jammu and Kashmir, a Fidayeen (suicide squad) terrorist detonated a powerful car bomb in the Nowgam area of capital Srinagar near the old residence of outgoing CM, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, killing at least 10 people and injuring 18 others.

October 18: Terrorists assassinate the Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Education, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Lone, while CPI-M legislator, Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami, escaped unhurt in a similar attempt in the high-security Tulsibagh area of capital Srinagar. Two SF personnel and a civilian are also killed in the incidents, for which the Islamic Front and Al-Mansooran have claimed responsibility.

October 10: Ten persons belonging to four families were reportedly killed by terrorists of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen outfit at Dhara and Gabbar in the Budhal area of Rajouri district.

September 10: Five soldiers are killed during a terrorist attack on an Army convoy on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway near Awantipore in the Pulwama district.

September 9: Six members of three families are killed and eight others sustain injuries when a group of terrorists attacked their houses at Dharmari in the Udhampur district.

August 12: Five civilians are killed and three others sustain injuries when a group of four terrorists attacked two houses at village Chajru in the Mahore area of Udhampur district.

July 29: In an attack at Budshah Chowk in the heart of the capital city of Srinagar, terrorists kill two SF personnel and injure at least 18 civilians, including ten journalists, and four SF personnel.

July 20: A Major of the Indian Army and two soldiers were among five people who died and 17 persons were wounded when a suspected suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden car into an Army vehicle near Burnhall School in the high-security civil lines area of Srinagar.

July 19: A group of terrorists, suspected LeT cadres, are reported to have killed six civilians at Dungi Bahak in the Mahore area of Udhampur district.

June 24: Nine soldiers are killed and 21 others sustained injuries when their bus was blown up in an explosion caused by the terrorists on the banks of the Dal Lake in Srinagar.

June 13: At least 13 civilians, including two schoolchildren, and three officers of the Central Reserve Police Force are killed and over a 100 people sustain injuries when an explosives-laden car blew up at a crowded marketplace in front of a Government school in the Pulwama township of south Kashmir.

May 12: Two women are killed and at least 60 persons, including 25 children, are wounded when terrorists lobbed a hand grenade targeting a patrol party of the BSF at the main entrance of the Tyndale Biscoe School in the Lalchowk area of Srinagar.

May 11: At least two persons are killed and 50 others sustain injuries when terrorists triggered a car bomb explosion in the Jawahar Nagar area of capital Srinagar. Over a dozen vehicles and approximately 40 shops, bank branches and residential houses are damaged in the blast. The HM, Al-Nasireen and Jammu and Kashmir Islamic Front claim responsibility for the blast in separate statements.

April 6: A day before the bus from Srinagar to Muzaffarabad in Pakistan occupied Kashmir is to be flagged off, two suicide squad terrorists attack the Tourist Reception Centre which was reportedly accommodating 24 passengers. Both the terrorists were killed in the ensuing gun-battle and seven persons, including a police personnel, were injured. 45 persons, including the passengers, were subsequently evacuated to safety.

February 24: Three police personnel, a woman employee of the Revenue Department and two terrorists are killed and four persons sustain injuries during a Fidayeen (suicide squad) attack at the Divisional Commissioner's office in the capital Srinagar.

January 7: A Deputy Commandant of the Border Security Force (BSF), two soldiers, one police personnel and a civilian are killed and four persons sustain injuries when a two-member Fidayeen attacked the Income Tax office in the capital Srinagar. While one of the terrorists was killed on January 7, the other was shot dead the next day.

November 17: Security forces kill two Fidayeen terrorists near the Sher-e-Kashmir International Cricket Stadium in Sonwar Bagh, Srinagar, the venue of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s public meeting.

October 24: National Conference president, Omar Abdullah, the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, and a number of other senior leaders of the party had a narrow escape when an IED, planted by unidentified terrorists exploded injuring seven people in Anantnag town.

October 9: In a suicide attack on an army convoy, at least four soldiers and a civilian driver are killed while 35 others sustained injuries near Hartrath bridge, Singhpura on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway.

October 8: A group of terrorists attack the convoy of National Conference president Omar Abdullah at Sher Bibi between Ramban and Banihal. Abdullah, however, escapes unhurt.

August 4: Nine Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, including a Company Commander, and one terrorist are killed and nine people sustain injuries during an encounter after two terrorists stormed a CRPF camp in the Rajbagh locality of capital Srinagar.

July 28: Five Central Reserve Police Force personnel and two terrorists were killed during an overnight gun-battle inside the para-military force camp on the banks of Dal Lake in the capital Srinagar.

July 19: Even as Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma escaped another assassination attempt - six days after a grenade attack in the capital Srinagar - at least six persons died and 50 others sustained injuries when terrorists carried out a grenade attack on three Congress Ministers and over a dozen senior Government officials during a rally at Kapran village in the Anantnag district.

July 13: Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mangat Ram Sharma, escapes a bid on his life when terrorists fired a rifle grenade on his cavalcade near Lala Rukh Hotel in the capital Srinagar. Five persons, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, sustained injuries during the attack which occurred when Sharma was en route to Jehangir Chowk to attend the inauguration ceremony of Kashmir’s first fly-over.

July 2: Six police personnel are killed and two others sustain injuries when terrorists attacked the convoy of Member of Parliament, Choudhury Lal Singh, by detonating two improvised explosive devices at Sangom Bahthi in the Doda district.

June 26: Twelve persons, including three children, are killed during a terrorist attack at village Teli Katha in the Surankote area of Poonch district.

June 12: At least five persons are killed and 25 others sustain injuries when a grenade planted by unidentified terrorists exploded in front of the Purnima Hotel at Pahalgam in Anantnag district.

May 23: At least 30 persons, including 19 Border Security Force personnel, six women and five children, are killed during an Improvised Explosive Device explosion at Lower Munda, near Qazigund, on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.

April 8: At least eleven persons are killed and 58 others are wounded during a terrorist attack on an election rally of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the border town of Uri in Baramulla district. Among those injured are Finance Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig and Housing Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir.

March 9: Offices of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Government of India and Directorate of Information of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir are destroyed during a fire even as troops kill two Fidayeen (suicide squad) terrorists who attacked and occupied the three-storeyed building in the Press Enclave area of capital Srinagar.

March 3: Seven persons, including four police personnel and two under-trial terrorists, are killed and six persons sustain injuries when a lone suicide terrorist (Fidayeen) attacked a police bus carrying 13 under-trials, mostly terrorists, from the district jail to the Court complex in Jammu. The lone Fidayeen was later shot dead by the troops.

January 2: A day ahead of the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s visit to Pakistan to attend the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit, two Fidayeen (suicide squad) terrorists attack the Jammu Railway Station killing four security force personnel and injuring nine others and six civilians.

2003

October 17: Security forces foil the first Fidayeen (suicide squad) attack on the official residence of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Maulana Azad Road in capital Srinagar. Two BSF personnel are killed and 10 persons, including three photojournalists, sustain injuries.

September 13: Prominent counter-insurgent leader and the leader of the Jammu and Kashmir Awami League, Mohammad Yusuf Parray alias Kukka Parray, is killed along with two of his colleagues, while eight others including four of his bodyguards are injured when terrorists ambushed his vehicle in his hometown Hajan in Baramulla district.

September 6: Seven civilians are killed and 32 others injured in a car bomb explosion at the main entrance of a fruit market on the national highway by-pass in Parimpora, outskirts of the capital city of Srinagar.

August 28: An encounter between two terrorists holed up in a hotel in Srinagar since the evening of August 27 ends, with five persons, including counter-insurgent and National Conference leader Javed Shah, a former legislator, dead.

July 22: A three-member fidayeen (suicide squad) storms an army camp killing eight security force personnel, including a Brigadier, and injuring 12 others, including four top Generals, a Brigadier and two Colonels at village Bangti on the Tanda road in Akhnoor.

July 21: At least seven persons, including a child, are killed and 30 others injured in two powerful explosions triggered by unidentified terrorists at Banganga, two kilometers from Katra, on way to the Vaishno Devi shrine.

June 28: In the first major terrorist strike since Prime Minister Vajpayee's April 18-peace initiative, two fidayeen (suicide squad) terrorists attack an army installation at the Dogra Regiment camp in Sunjwan on the outskirts of Jammu city killing 12 soldiers and injuring seven others, including a Lieutenant, before being killed by the troops.

May 26: A group of seven unidentified terrorists intrude into the house of a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member and kill all five members of the family, including three children, and later set ablaze their house at village Seri Khwas in the Koteranka area of Rajouri district.

May 19: Four women and two children are beheaded by suspected JeM terrorists at village Chowkian in the Kot Dhara area of Rajouri district.

April 26: A group of fidayeen (suicide squad) attacks the local station of All India Radio in Srinagar. Three terrorists and two SF personnel are killed and eight others injured in the ensuing encounter.

April 25: Two unidentified terrorists conduct a suicide attack on the Sector-11 headquarters of the Border Security Force at Madar in the Bandipore area of Baramulla district and kill three BSF personnel. Later, both the terrorists and a civilian are killed in retaliatory firing. Four more BSF personnel and three civilians sustain injuries in the attack.

April 22: Six persons are killed and three others injured in a landmine explosion in Pulwama district.

March 23: Terrorists massacre 24 Kashmiri Pandits (descendants of Brahmin priests), including 11 women and two children, at Nadimarg village near Shopian, Pulwama district.

March 16: Nine Special Police Officers (SPO) and two civilians are killed and two others injured in a terrorist attack on a remote police post in the Gool area of Udhampur district.

March 14: Three civilians and a Deputy Superintendent of Police are killed in a suspected fidayeen (suicide squad) attack on a Muharram (religious procession of Muslims) procession at the Poonch Bus Stand, Poonch district.

January 28: National Conference leader and prominent businessman, Farooq Ahmed Kuchchay, and his Personal Security Officer are killed by a group of four suspected Hizb-ul-Mujahideen terrorists at Udhir village, Chatru area of Doda district.

December 20: Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Abdul Aziz Mir of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) is assassinated by an unidentified terrorist near Pampore town.

December 19: A Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) suicide terrorist and one security force (SF) personnel are killed while three more SF personnel are injured in a suicide attack on an Army post in Khablan village, Thanna Mandi area, Rajouri district.

December 1: Two SF personnel, two terrorists and a civilian are killed in a suicide attack by the LeT on an Army patrol in Bilalabad Mohalla, Doda town.

December 5: Ghulam Mohiuddin Lone, elder brother of slain State Law Minister Mushtaq Ahmed Lone, is killed outside his residence in Sogam village, Lolab area of Kupwara district.

November 28: Al Badr carries out a rocket attack on the main station of Radio Kashmir in Srinagar causing extensive damage.

November 24: 13 persons are killed and 45 others injured as two Lashkar-e-Toiba fidayeen (suicide squad) storm two shrines––Raghunath and Panjbakhtar temples––in Jammu.

November 23: 19 persons, including nine SF personnel, three women and two children, are killed in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast at Lower Munda on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

November 22: LeT terrorists kill six SF personnel in the first suicide attack of the year 2002 in Srinagar.

September 25: Abdul Wahid Shan, legislator and National Conference (NC) candidate from Gool-Arnas constituency, escapes an assassination attempt in the Gool area.

September 21: A police personnel is killed and seven others injured in a suicide attack on the Police Housing Colony, Bemina area, Srinagar.

Minister Sakeena Itoo escapes another assassination attempt at Mirhama, in Kulgam.

September 20: An unidentified terrorist makes an unsuccessful assassination attempt on the life of Sakeena Itoo, NC candidate from Noorabad Assembly constituency and Minister of State for Tourism.

September 15: Terrorists make an unsuccessful attempt on the life of Sakeena Itoo, Minister of State for Tourism and NC candidate from Noorabad constituency. One SF personnel and a civilian are killed in the incident.

Terrorists launch grenade attacks on the house of NC Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament) Member Abdur Rasheed Shaheen, at Pattan in Sopore.

September 12: Terrorists attack Defence Minister George Fernandes’ entourage proceeding to attend the funeral of slain State Law Minister Mushtaq Ahmed Lone in Kupwara. No casualties are reported.

September 11: State Law Minister and NC candidate from Lolab constituency in Kupwara district, Mushtaq Ahmed Lone, is assassinated while addressing a rally at Tikipora. Three SF personnel are also killed in the incident.

September 9: Unidentified terrorists kill five civilians, including two couples, and injure another in the Thanamandi area of Rajouri district.

September 6: An independent candidate for the Legislative Assembly elections is killed in an ambush at Handwara, Kupwara district. Three more persons are also killed in this incident.

August 6: Eight Amarnath pilgrims are killed and 32 others injured in Pahalgam.

July 13: 25 persons, including 12 women and a child, are killed and 35 others injured in a terrorist massacre at Kasim Nagar, Jammu.

May 21: Senior leader of the separatist All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and founder-president of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC), Abdul Gani Lone, is assassinated by two unidentified gunmen at the Eidgah grounds in Srinagar.

May 14: 36 persons are killed and 48 others injured in a fidayeen (suicide squad) attack on an army cantonment in Kaluchak, Jammu.

April 30: Five SF personnel are killed and 25 civilians injured in a grenade attack by unidentified terrorists at Surankote, Poonch district.

March 30: In an attack on the Raghunath temple in Jammu by two fidayeen (suicide squad), seven persons, including three SF personnel, are killed and more than 20 injured.

February 16: Four suspected terrorists of LeT’s Abdullah Bhai group massacre eight civilians and injure six others at Nirala in Rajouri district.

November 30: Four Village Defence Committee (VDC) members and three civilians are killed by a group of five unidentified terrorists at Galyot, Udhampur district.

October 22: Four Lashkar-e-Toiba fidayeen (suicide squad) terrorists attack the Awantipora base of the Indian Air Force. All four are killed and so were two civilians.

October 18: Separate unsuccessful assassination attempts are made on two State ministers in Baramulla district by suspected HM terrorists. The target of the first attack was Works Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar while the second was Minister of State for Rural Development Ajay Sadhotra. There were no casualties in either attack.

October 1: 36 persons are killed in a suicide attack carried out by the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) on the State Legislative Assembly complex in Srinagar.

September 17: Nine SF personnel, sleeping inside the basement of a building in Handwara, Kupwara, are killed when two fidayeen of the LeT attack them using grenades.

August 29: Six SF personnel and two civilians are killed as terrorists detonate an IED under a bus at Hangalpua, Anantnag district.
