ISI chief wants no coverage in media

Makes absolute sense. Otherwise ISI had been turned into a dog and pony show for all and sundry.

How I wish for ISI/MI and even SSG etc. to go low-profile instead of being paraded around idiotically. Not everything should be seen or put on display.

Even the meetings of the CoAS with foreign dignitaries need to be clamped down on at least in terms of coverage. It looks like a clown show that the CoAS is meeting the departing ambassador of Greece (reported today).

It seems sane voices like these are now far and few in between in this country.

Lt-Gen (retd) Amjad Shoaib says the basic principle of intelligence services is to stay away from the media’s eye

ISLAMABAD: Director General (DG) Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt Gen Nadeen Anjum has asked all authorities concerned not to release to the media his picture or video footage, made during any official meeting.

A federal minister, on condition of not being named, told The News on Monday that for the same reason, the government did not release any of his picture or video footage. The National Security Committee met on Monday. The meeting was also attended by the DG ISI. However, the picture and video footage, released to the media by the government, showed almost everyone else except for the top spymaster of the country.

When asked for the reason, the minister said it’s a standing instruction for all concerned from the incumbent DG ISI not to release any of his pictures or video footage of any official meeting that he attends. The minister was reluctant to say this on record.

The minister added that for the same reason, ever since his appointment as the DG ISI, none of his picture or video footage has been released to the media. Lt-Gen (retd) Amjad Shoaib, while commenting on it, said the basic principle of intelligence services is to stay away from the media’s eye. He said there have been violations of the principle in the past and a number of times the governments had been releasing to the media picture and video footage of the intelligence chiefs.

Shoaib said the intelligence chiefs should not be shown on the media and TV screens. Generally, he explained, the spymasters are not recognised in the public all over the world for the same reason. He said this basic principle got compromised during the Afghan war when Gen Hameed Gul and General Javed Nasir were heading the ISI.

He said he was not part of any intelligence network but even then when he was promoted and posted as GOC Quetta, the then Army Chief General Abdul Waheed Kakar advised him to stay away from the media.

Maj Gen (retd) Ejaz Awan, who also served in the ISI in the past, told The News that the new DG ISI seems to be following the pattern of doing his work without being publicised in the media.

Awan recalled that when he was appointed as ISI Sector Commander Lahore, he was told by his DG ISI General (retd) Ahsan that “you would be a good intelligence operator if you roam around Lahore and no one notices you and no one recognises that here the ISI Sector Commander is going”. Ideally, he said, people should not know by face who is the intelligence operator.
Smart man, and a good move. Miss the good old days when these things were kept totally low profile and not every idiot ran around taking pics on their mobile phones for vanity sake.

Every time I see the COAS in his sit down pose with foreign dignitaries I cringe. He needs to be less available to foreigners.

we are not 'other' countries nor we want to be..
if qasim sulemani is celebrity for you then why cant an average Pakistani celebrate his isi chief?
None of the Iranians know about their Intelligence chief. Soleimani was a celebrity for his services and his valour during Iran Iraq war where he spent 8 years of his life in trenches fighting the invaders and later breaking the ISIS in Iraq, Syria. He was a celebrity since the beginning and the only one. Is the new IRGC chief a celebrity? No. But every ISI chief is. We should move on from military fandom. Nobody around the world does that and yeah their militaries are working well without that.

Rest assured pakistanis also remember only the important chiefs..noone remembers people like ziaudin butt..its the ISI institution itself the reason behind people keeping isi chief in high regards.

There should be a strict law in the land not to mention the ISI organisation, their activities, or show any retired / serving personal in the media. I'm not sure why the retired Chiefs are always giving interviews.

If it's necessary to mention the organisation, it should be mentioned only as the "security agency" or the "secret service".

Aged like milk?

what about now?
The media should never be a court to judge right or wrong. I say this as a member of the media (via Quwa).

Rather, there are 2 places where a security institution should be held accountable:

1. In front of a judge and under the laws of the country. This is in cases where the institution is charged with committing illegal action.

2. In front of trusted, neutral experts. This is for cases where the institution is charged with incompetence.

Unfortunately, our country is so borked, that there's little point in discussing how to do the advanced things (like accountability mechanisms) when the fundamentals are non-existent. We have foreign officials apparently bypassing the government to meet our military officials. We have politicians maintaining links to the outside. We have a nationwide propensity to basically inflict violence and hardship when things aren't going our way.

The above does not just apply to Showbaaz in today's circumstances.

Normally the whole army should be out of the media limelight.

Stop CAOS pressers of him meeting people. No media coverage needed. Guy calls up Bill Gates and there is a presser.

Even the DG ISPR pressers are a circus. Cut down it’s size. Only during war times should it be active or regime changes. 😂

Only time army should be in the limelight is 23rd March.
