Okay there I was sneezing [have a bad cold] and a thought grabbed me. What if any are signs of a country/culture that has potential to get developed or is on the way to being developed? Well I leave all the complicated economic indicators to the likes od Riazhaq and the Indian techies here. Being a simple chap this is the 5 Point Test I have come up with. Go out in your town and see if you tick these boxes. Now don't forget to tick the sign it must be widespread or ubiquitous and not isolated to few cases. Okay here we go.

I am going to use Turkey as "test example". Does your town have -

1. Predominantly or significant sloping roofs that use some type of roofing tile. Image below of old house in Istanbul.

Old-Houses-In-Istanbul.jpg

2. Does the sloping roof have some sort of water dispoal guttering that relays rain to the ground thereby preventing unsightly stains along the walls and causing ugly cracks over time?

Istanbul- above/below. Old houses.

3. Do you typically have pavements in your town that are elevated and disgned only for pedestrians/ Also they have not been encroached on and are free to use without obstructions.

4. Does your town make some effort to relay cables underground this hiding them and not have them hanging everywhere posing danger/looking hideous?

5. Does your town make some effort to lay underground sewer lines as opposed to leaving open lines everywhere?

Turkey scored 5/5 therefore it passed the test. well done Turkey ! Although this is meant to be lighthearted 5 Point Test of your culture/country but there is deep basis to it. Greatness is in the fine details. Greatness is in the subtle things in life. Greatness is being particular with even small things. Non of these 5 points is rocket science. It could have been done 2000 years ago. What it does require though is a culture and society that is particular with doing things properly. No corners cut. Societies that have such traits that are concerned with even small details are societies that will succeed in time. They have the right cultural/societal traits. It has little to do with being poor either.

And before some of you cite lack of rain as excusing you from some of the signs I have enumerated. Don't. If you look at Karachi in 1900s under British rule most buildings had all the signs I have marked. Karachi was dry as a bone then as it is now. However the culture/society that ruled it has changed.

And finally if your town gets a score below 4/5 then your country is doomed to stay undeveloped for at least the next 50 years if not more. If it score 4/5 or higher then your either already developed on well on the way to get developed or will be within 50 years. So how did your town/country score?

Thats actually a very basic but a good indicator for development state of a country though in Turkeys case i wont take it as an exsample regarding sidewalks, sometimes they dont even think when doing stuff, Turkey has still a long way to go.

Not a bad start! Not sure if is it is 100% accurate but I think you are at least going down a good road.

Maybe you should add in more basics like clean water and electricity that is affordable to the common man. Maybe even concentrate on the common man stuff as only say 30% of the population being able to have something is meaningless if the other 70% are excluded. For instance China looks modern when you look at their cities and infrastructure but if say over 50% are still living in crude housing in the countryside without utilities then you have to put things into perspective.

You could even say do 90%+ of the population live in housing built by professional builders (vs tossed together with no plans).

Absolutely right and I can even show you much more pictures with ridiculous urban planning which is particularly dangerous for people with handicaps. However, we shouldn't forget that this was Istanbul just 15 years ago:

Pakistan's financial capital Karachi turned 'into rubbish bin'

We have come a long way since then. I can see that even in the most underdeveloped corners of Anatolia municipalities today show more awareness.

How do you change the mindset of a nation in very short time without using dictatorial policies?

My country is already developed but we are doing more and pushing the boundaries, Australia for such a small country keeps punching above it's weight, be in at the Olympics, Cricket, sports in general, tech, medical field, or education Australia is always ranked among the top 10.

You should also add the cash in hand for instant use, the feeling for safety, criminal rate, life expectancy, food quality, etc

For example, USA the so called super developed country in name but in reality, more than 80% of Americans can't even have 1000 cash for emergency use, you can't walk alone at night which you don't know how many guns are pointing your back(las vegas shooting), more than 45 millions Americans are living by food stamps, americans' life expectancy is worse than some developing nations, no need to say the world' famous American chemical foods.

Hey buddy, Australia is not small at all it is huge.
Agree, you guys also have a lot of untapped potential.

The work is still not being done propperly though, its a little better than before but not enough, we must be much better instead of wasting tax money by repairing the same road every second year.

Possible? Sure

Likely? NOPE

by 2050, I feel around 15-20 cities in India at Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia level........rest of India would be like a respectable middle-income level sub-Saharan African country..let's say Ghana...............total GDP per capita (nominal) before economic progress stagnate---around 9000 dollars ..........so we can still grow by about four and a half times....the first interim report when India should be assessed---When Modi's second term is over at 2024

Population wise it is a small country, our population is just 23 million, land area is huge, so I am talking about how good we are for a small population, better than China, India etc.

You guys are good because white people believe in rationality and agnosticism rather then superstitions or religious belief...no secret sauce really....but incredibly hard for a non-white race to inculcate that sort of temper

.
30million population, tiny n under the radar

I think only 20% chance of making it due to high corruption, ignorant and laid-back majority and petty trivial politicians with no sense of priority

There was a time when Malaysia was truly High flying.....There was the Petronas Towers, the Sepang Race Track, Petronas puring 30-50 million dollars a year in F1 sponsorship, Petronas even pouring money for a three cylinder MotoGP project which later became the Foggy FP1 superbike, Proton sponsoring Kenny Robert's V5 MotoGP development, Proton buying Lotus sports cars, Proton buying MV Agusta superbike company, Proton having a world class rally team

It seemed Malaysia could do no wrong
Then sadly it all fizzled out

This year Malaysia hosted its last ever F1 race at the Sepang track, bringing curtains to an amazing 20 year growth story of a country

Incidentally Sepang was the first of the new mega budget architecturally stunning modern F1 tracks in traditionally non-motorsport countries.....

It seems growth of China took away the Malaysian growth story

1998-2017 was a terrific time for Malaysia
