So who really believed the F-117 officially 'retired'...Not me...

WHY IS THE STEALTHY F-117 NIGHTHAWK STILL FLYING? | aviationintel
...is still flying around the Nellis Range Complex years after it’s official retirement back in 2008.

...we know that at least one, and reportedly up to six F-117s are still flying,...

...could theoretically be used as something of a “flying measuring stick” for evaluating a radar system’s ability to detect and track low-observable flying objects, or conversely, it could be used as a surrogate to test new radar absorbent materials and coatings applied to it’s flat, facet like structure that was built originally to accept such applications.

...program managers could have a control variable, in this case the F-117′s well documented radar cross-section and it’s infra-red and visual signature, and an independent variable for which to test upon, that independent variable being a new radar absorbent material or other experimental signature control component. By doing so testers can leverage highly accurate real-life metrics for which to judge the effectiveness of their new application and then either ditch it or improve upon it, with the goal of eventually migrating it to operational weapon systems.

...it would make total sense for the USAF to field the F-117s as stealth aggressors against American and even friendly foreign platforms and aircrews during military exercises.
We WILL -- if not already -- know how to detect other low observable bodies.

It's not really active service, more of a testing platform?

It doesn't go out dropping bombs after all!

The American Phantoms are still in service too (QF-4) as target drones. QF-16s will replace them in the near future

Why so surprised gambit?Havent the USAF been useing the phantom till fairly recently as ew platforms and the A10. I strongly believe the USAF will continue to use the F 117wherever they deem necessary.

Not at all. The F-117 is the ideal testing platform to develop effective countermeasures against low radar observable bodies. Just another step ahead of the competition.

why not test the systems with the f-22

F-117 was never destroyed it was kept intact and put in storage...

but

F-117 will most likely never be used in combat again, unless in the unlikely event there is a severe air force equipment shortage.

This is strictly my opinion...

The F-117 offers greater flexibility because of its non operation status and therefor it is not burdened by normal USAF 'combat ready' requirements and because of its greater dependency on absorbers for low radar observability which compelled the design to have regular maintenance on installed absorbers, different experimental absorbers can be tested in different quantities in different situations.

Like the author's opinion -- a measuring stick.
