Is South Korea Switching Sides?

While I fully acknowledge South Korea's legitimate concerns about the North, I believe it will be wise for South Korea to think twice about over-relying for its defense and security, on the US who's a staunch ally of Japan, South Korea's nemesis. Apparently, there has been huge American pressure being brought to bear on South Korea regarding the installation of the THAAD system on its soil. This is a move which serves to undermine the increasingly cooperative spirit between South Korea and its most important economic partner, China.

Why is South Korea willingly putting itself in harm's way in the possible line of fire in case of a conflict between the US and China? Rather than being overtly defensive, perhaps it's time for China to seriously court Ecuador, Cuba and Venezuela to install its own version of missile defense system in the American periphery?
Of course SK have legitimate concerns about the North, so dose china, but countries like US and Japan claiming that NK is a treat to them is just so funny, anyone with a bit of knowledge about military knows that NK doesn't have the capability to launch any aggression against US and Japan, but you know their media is hyping up the NK like it is some sort of super power, there are many chinese and American intel suggests that those NK nuclear tests were fake, they don't have nuclear weapon, and will certainly never have under the strict sanctions.

I think china can offer SK both economic benefits and security, i mean the real security, or we can ignore the NK, which is losing it value and becoming too hot to handle anyway, we can pass it to someone else, since some countries seems so eager to succeed our role, if you know what i mean. The unification would be a nightmare for some countries, they will do everything to stop it form happening, the South Koreans are smart people, they know that.
As for the THAAD system, the US is repeating the mistake they made to the EU countries to use them as cannon fodder, it will only further disappoints the South Koreans. Yes,the NK crappy missile can indeed hit South that for sure, but easy to intercept, the real stuff that the south is concerned are those thousands of artilleries, which can turn Seoul into a hellhole in few minutes. they know if the US is really want to protect them, some patriots and standards anti-air missile would be enough, they know the THAAD system is for countering china, not shielding the South.:)

Agreed. the US does not seem to sincerely wish the crisis to end. What is better than a no-crisis situation is a crisis that can be manipulated. The US manipulates the South-North crisis to its marrow. Japan plays the spare-tire role, which is not lost to the Koreans. What is left for Koreans is to balance the US out by getting closer to China.

Also agreed on the missile system. The US pushes hard on the South for it; just as they did with countries near Russia's borders. The end is that the pawns are used and spent as the large geopolitical powers often stay intact. In the case of China and the US, the lackeys will probably pay more dearly than the primary actors. South Korea seems to recognize the danger of being used by one side for that side's own geopolitical games against another giant nation.

South Korea never really was anti-China.

They just had this lingering suspicion due to CCP's support of the Fat Kims.

If at all, Korea actually holds the key to normalizing relations between all the three East Asian neighbours: Korea, China, Japan.

China doesn't need South Korea on it side. China doesn't need exclusionary relationship with any other country. It is acceptable to China that other countries, like South Korea, can have a good relationship with it, the US, and any countries at the same time. However, if any country, including South Korea, and especially ones that's close to China that does something which is strategically threatening to China's national/sovereign security then China must respond to it appropriately.

Korean unification is not possible without China's blessing. North Korea actions has embarrassed China while South Korean-China trade is booming. Both countries are using each other to discipline North Korea.

I do not think so. This is just wishful thinking. South Korean economic ties with West are much more stronger than with China. South Korea's products from mobile phones to cars are sold like hot cakes in US.

Yes. I observe a similar realignment, especially with the FTA tie-up with China. South Korea seeks a more balanced and independent foreign policy. This does not mean they will decouple from the US regime, but, they seek China to balance the US presence.

One thing is a clear. Korea is no Japan and does not wish to be a vassal of the US.
korea is a vassal state of the US. I thought Korea have already decided THAAD is a go. Korea is looking after its interest. They want to make money from China, and align with US on international policies for the most part.

They are talking about North Korea , they are the ones rethinking their relations with Beijing in favor of Washington , well guess what , everyone is starting to hate china .
Who needs North Korea, in fact Iran should be buddies with NoKor now, I mean both being poor pariah countries.
