Is 'pursuit of happiness' overrated?

Happiness is a relative term and depends on the state of your own heart & soul.
To keep one's own heart happy, there is only one formula.

"Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction". Quran (13; 28)

All attachments leads to suffering. A human remains happy as long as his possessions are with him. The moment he loses something it becomes hard for him to let it go, so much to the extent that he will cross seas and oceans in search of it. This whole world is a materialistic realm. Once a person gets rid of all this materialistic attachments, he will have nothing to lose. Therefore he will achieve his inner peace. Happiness is just an expression. One should rather aim for inner peace.

Those were not Quresh but people of Taif.

Happiness is all around us we don't need to chase it, however being successful and feeling accomplished is one aspect of being happy. A simple example would be when your child takes his/her first steps, when she utters the words baba mama for the first time, when you see your parents smiling etc these little things make you will feel happy like nothing else. We chase things that we don't have and it is not necessary that once we have achieved those things that will make us happy. This chase could be more of for peace of mind rather than for feeling or being happy.

Actually you are right. I made the mistake. Yes it was people of Ta'if.

Indeed. But remember Allah loves to see one helping his creation. :)

You will only help Allah's creations, when your own heart & soul is satisfied and happy. :-)

You sure? I kinda disagree here. What if you're put on trial by Allah and things are not working out in your life. It is not making you happy. So in that case you won't help others? Actually, sometimes when you're unhappy with things in your life, you help others and make them happy which technically brings smiles and happiness in your life. Nai ?

I am sure.
The discussion can go on and on, but just keeping it simple.
As I said, happiness is relative and may have a different meaning for each individual.

I believe, that one can truly help other's when he/she is truly satisfied themselves, otherwise it would be for other reasons.

Isn't pursuit of happiness a very selfish thing? It's all about you. You want yourself to be happy & sometimes it doesn't even matter to people that on their way to find happiness-----they have made many unhappy & crestfallen. Interestingly, just cup of tea can make you happy. Then why the furor about it? Isn't pursuit of impact a bigger thing than pursuit of happiness? When you want to do more for others than yourself. You want to make this world better place to live? How can you do it when all you think is about yourself? Technically, making others smile or happy is already making you happy as well. No?

What is your take on it?
