The following which i am going to say is not verified by any link or any other thing. Only what i have heard from well placed people I know.

I had a conversation with a guy, who is well placed in the Govt. and i had a little bit of an argument with him, he told me that what do you common people know? Ask us what we have done, and then all the usual blabber. Then i said tell me about your achievements in detail.

He told me that the Government HAS PAID OFF 70% of the national debt. I told him about the economy during Musharraf era, he said it is total false, nothing like that happened, Pakistan grew minimally in the first 4 years of Mush , contrary to popular belief. He said that the kalabagh dam is now in it's final stages. And then went to the usual blabber about the NFC awards, 18th amendment and such. Said the Army is more corrupt than the political setup.

He said that have you ever seen any army leader walk with his shalwar up in the flooded streets. ( we all know that COAS goes to the frontlines everyweek)

He confirmed that Rehman Malik is not in favor with the people at the moment, and not taken seriously.

But, the question i have in mind, Has Pakistan really paid off it's 70% debt in three years?, i personally think it is BS.:what:

Assalam alaikum

It depends on how repayments are described.

A $100 loan, payable over a long period of time with interest, will total several hundreds dollars of repayments. So after paying $70 back, one could claim to have paid back 70% of the loan, but with several hundred dollars worth of repayments still to be made.

Well VCheng, that is one way of looking at it.

But he said that we dont know what is going on behind , we dont know all the things that are going good in the countryy, and the army is doing more bad than the politicians. And if PML and PPP would be abolished, Pakistan would disintegrate.!

But, i think he meant it with full interest included as well, but even without interest , 70%? Would be nice to see some figures, of debt taken last 50 years, and then last 3, and then debt paid off in last 3. I cant get them anywhere.

I would like to pass judgement on his personal opinions about the Army and the political parties, but there are lots of data about the debt position of Pakistan, and trust me, is quite bad. The figures would not support your "well-placed guy", and I was merely giving an example of how to reconcile what he was saying with the actual numbers.

I think, he just want to save his seat position in government. Telling you many lies. Last three years, Pakistan spend heavy prices on WOT and increase borrowing.

@ nuclearpak, Check the inflation today. You will know the truth (provided you know the basics of macroeconomics).

Well Camacho, i am not really into financing and economics, but please do say, that if i loaned 100$ in 1995, with an interest rate of 3%, would it increase more because of inflation or decrease?

Well, i tried to look to find some figures, but could not find them. At that moment , i sadly had no figures to prove him at fault, other than the usual " pachas saal main itna karza nhn liya jitnay in teen salon main". Wonder if that is true as well!

He put the accomplishment of no bombings in Isl and Lhr squarely on the Political establishment and totally forgot the role of the Army and the Military, Rehab and all that.

But we would be going a bit of topic, or rather off section, by taking the army opinion further.

To stay on topic, here is some information you may find useful on the debt situation:

and

IF GOP has paid 70% debt then is it not an achievement to brag about? why would any political party will keep it secret?

If Government will repay even 1/3rd Debt, It will shout 24x7. why they will be silent when it can give some political gain that also when things are negative?

BUT GDP growth, Inflation, Increasing expenses are same for last 3 years, So looks unlikely.

All political leader/people related with Gov. says same positive things for vested interest. But I don't know sure for this one. Just my general view !!

Well i have a relative in FBR, currently deputed at PM Secretariat, i consulted her and frequently ask her about these things, according to her, it is not getting better any time soon, so forget the 70%, it aint even 20%!
