Is India a country or continent?

Isn't it unfair comparing India's GDP to that of normal, real countries? A realistic comparison would be that between India and one of the continents mentioned above, or China. India is only ahead of Oceania (tiny population) w.r.t. nominal GDP. That's nothing to brag about.
You have a point but you have yourself answered to your observation. Total GDP is always a notional number. A number that just highlights a certain aspect of an economy.

Anyone with even basic knowledge of these things would never term it as an ultimate benchmark of wellness. When GDP increases, per capita would also increase and total numbers are feel good. That’s it.

It is “per capita” that matters. There have been so many threads on PDF bringing out per capita GDP of various countries in the region. Actually there is a corollary to this. Per capita and total GDP of few Indian States is more than a lot of countries in the world as well as the region. But what is the value of this fact? Zilch.

India has higher GDP than Britain. Does it make India more wealthy or a better state? We all know the answer.

Then why this sudden urge to question total GDP figures and compare it with total GDP of continents?

The population of North America in 2022 was 376,870,696, a 0.42% increase from 2021.

It's 579 million according to Wiki.

Can't this logic apply to China?

China is very unique, 98% people look identical and speak same language. India is extremely diverse, more diverse than other continents and probably as diverse as Africa. India spans 4 primary language families and hundreds of ethnicities.

Indians keep comparing their GDP to that of other smaller countries incessantly to prove their country is on the way to become supapowa. You know what I'm talking about. So just a reality check for them.

It's a subcontinent actually. That's what they call it.

Also supapowah India ap ke ha great contry good ok.

Ohh. You are right.
Thanks for this social service of creating such a nice thread. We need more good folks like you.

again, diversity, population or whatever is not what determines if a land mass is a continent. a continent is a geological feature, what part of that dont you understand?

as for GDP and such, the comparison is generally made between economies, and economies just are generally its own countries which makes logical sense, but its not always so which is why places like HK is counted separately from china for GDP and such because it is a unique economy from china in practice. and also why sometimes EU is counted as one, because of the integration there.

Well across ethnic lines it is a continent and has ever been a continent

A Continent

It is a general definition that a Continent is a very large land mass that is separated from other continents in the world by oceans. But, that is not precise. These continents are separated only by geographical boundaries that limit these land masses to a certain area. Rather, the continents are defined by the rocks it's made of and how it came to be that matter. These continents are a group of some countries which are conglomerated based on certain physical and geographic characters.

A Country

A Country is a certain part of a continent defined by some specific geographical territories. These are separable with other countries politically and culturally. Every country will have its own law, constitution, government, and other governing institutions. In spite of having a few similarities, each country is a separate entity having unique cultural and traditional practices.
