Also, in terms of the field, there are some distinct areas namely quantum computing, quantum cryptography, quantum sensors, which should all be treated separately.

China is most competitive in quantum cryptography.

China is still a kid in terms of quantum computing however.

IIT Bombay is in the same place Tsinghua was 15-20 years back. Similar to Tsinghua, it is the hub of country's brightest, but like Tsinghua back in the days, due to shortage of funds it is not very competitive I'm research.

I am not an expert yet. I hope in the next 5-6 years I can confidently say that I am am expert.

China is way past the Industrialized country now. It would be more interesting to know the areas where China is lagging behind

there are many sectors that we are still lagging behind the strongest industrialized countries, e.g. Germany, Japan, or USA. Some areas are about conventional machinery sector, e.g. precise machining, specialized steel for extreme conditions, etc. Some are about new technologies, e.g. semiconductor, robotics, autonomous driving, machine learning, etc.

We are very clear of the limitations of our manufacturing industry. On the one side, we've managed to significantly narrow the manufacturing industry capability gap against the most developed countries, in the past 20 to 30 years; on the other side, the gap is still there. I think we will need another 20 to 30 years to eliminate the gap.

What's important to us is, within almost all emerging/disruptive technology areas, we've seen the emergence of some Chinese scientists or startups. Many of them are still young, or immature. But we are there, inside the circle!

Agree. Another angle to find out what's lagging is trade deficit, given China is the world's largest and most complete industrial base, trade data reflects relative competitiveness. Top deficits are with Taiwan, South Korea, Germany and Japan. How? Let's look at their competitive edges, which correspond to what China is lagging.

Taiwan: Chipsets/semiconductors (which is the single largest import item of China, surpassing crude oil); Optics.
South Korea: Chipsets/semiconductors; Advanced chemicals; Heavy machinery; Special steel.
Japan: Optics; Special steel; Precision mechanical components (e.g. compressors); CNC machine tools; Robotics & automation; Heavy machinery;
Germany: CNC machine tools; Precision mechanical components; Robotics & automation; Luxury automobiles.​

Again, except for consumer goods like luxury automobiles, I wish "Made in China 2025" can close the gap on all industrial items (capital goods, core components, advanced steel/materials).
