Thanks to Ershad north Bengal is in good shape.

Thanks to a very centralised Bangladesh - Dhaka region is doing well.

Thanks to the port and entrepreneurial culture of Chittagongians - that region is doing fantastically well.

Thanks to Londonis - Sylhet division is in good health.

However, Mother Nature has dealt our brothers and sisters in the south west a bad hand.

The bridge is a good start but should the government do more?

I don’t see mega projects related to climate change and flooding!!!

Can the knowledgeable people share what the chetona mob is doing for this part of Bangladesh!!!???

Will the bridge facilitate opening of 100s of garment factories to employ women of that region?

If people cannot help themselves, no one will help them.

Working hard and improving one's station in life is an innate drive that some people have, others don't.

Ask Khulna and Barisal people why they themselves did not develop their own areas and industrialize them.

Khulna is right across the border from Kolkata area.

No one gave rats behind about these areas. Sheikh Hasina is from that area too (Tungi Para) - what happened?

No Sylhet isn't in good health. Sylhet should have had the best infrastructure and living quality in Bangladesh as we are an Oil and Gas producing region (lets not talk about remittance). We don't even have a road that isn't broken in every couple of kilometers.

After M. Saifur Rahman Sylhet has became orphan. Sylhetis have money but they cant build public infrastructure. And why should we spend our personal wealth after giving taxes? Where is our fair share of government development fund and "our" Oil and Gas revenue?

Let me tell you a very controversial and bitter truth, we Sylhetis were better under British crown then Pakistani period and current Bangladeshi state. We can not speak as we are heavily out numbered.

Ask Khulna and Barisal people why they themselves did not develop their own areas and industrialize them.
They will rather flood Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet for jobs...

What you say maybe is somewhat true but Sylhetis are mostly highly educated and are in leadership positions in academia, govt. and businesses (What about Muhith and his brother Momen?).

Londonis are also a significant part of the Sylheti diaspora who have done quite well for themselves. However non-Londonis are also are in well-to-do spots and some happen to be my relatives who are quite highly qualified and placed.

I don't know if I'd say that Sylhetis are doing badly. I can't see Sylhetis doing badly compared to the rest of Bangladesh, mainly because they are adventurous and hard-working.

Industrial infra alone, take a look in just Habiganj.

A portion of the Londonis have emigrated to Hamtramck city in Michigan and quite a few of course live in NYC as well.

Sylhet Hi-Tech Park

That didn't fix our bad public infrastructure, law and order...

Bhai, I never said we are doing bad. I said our public infrastructure is bad (which in turn making our living standard bad) even after we are paying our taxes. We aren't getting our fair share of development fund and lets not even talk about our oil and gas revenue.

Bhai, do you think Sylhetis are flooding to get those low paying jobs? Most of the workers are non Sylheti.

@Abu Shaleh Rumi here is Sylheti entertainment for you...sorry I'm no expert on these things...dance seems authentic though.

There will be high paying jobs too, I think a lot of companies are interested in Sylhet High Tech Park as well as EPZs in Sylhet.

High Paying jobs will only come to Sylhet when local people are highly educated AND decide to STAY BACK in Sylhet to set up businesses.

When educated Sylhetis are migrating overseas like Gujarati people - then local businesses will not flourish. It's a circular problem.

What Sylhetis need to do is petition the PM for more funding for improving Sylhet infra like roads and other things showing business needs.

Some things are actually tried in Sylhet first in terms of infra.

For example taking electric cabling underground was tried in Sylhet (Zindabazaar) near the Dargah Gate area first - before even Dhaka.

Setting up business in Bangladesh? Unless you're a government croney forget about it. Corrupt, incompetent administration and political terrorist will fuk you up.

Setting up business in UK, France, USA and Canada is much easier and you will get local governments help too. In Bangladesh you have to worry about corrupt, incompetent administration and political terrorist more then your business.

When you have to worry about other things over your business it will not flourish...
What Sylhetis need to do is petition the PM for more funding for improving Sylhet infra like roads and other things showing business needs.
Waste of time...

Dude! When I visit Sylhet - some parts look like Home Counties of England.

People look well fed and I don’t see slums.

As for infrastructure - industrial parts of Bangladesh is rightly getting the big ticket items for now.

We sylhetis should not decry that.

Remember, without Bangladesh we would be at the mercy of Hinduvta in Assam.

If people cannot help themselves, no one will help them.

That region has always been plagued by leftists.

I think sylhetis and Chittagong people are the most capitalists in Bangladesh.

Also the most willing to travel for opportunities. Sufi inheritance I guess.

Leftism has never taken hold there.

Both are also big Sufi country with loads of shrines.

To tackle the adverse effect of climate change Bangladesh launched its biggest and longest running delta management works with the help of Netherlands named 'Delta plan 2100AD' in 2018. Under this program, Bangladesh will spend $37.5 billion by 2030 and hundreds of billions there after upto 2100AD. It is a holistic program will manage our water resources similar to the Netherlands. It will tackle our flooding, drought, salinity intrusion, sea level rise and will build infrastructure for coastal protection, land reclamation from rivers and the Bay of Bengal and many other things.

To be honest with you, quite literally the same applies to Chittagong...

Very poor infrastructure, I don't want to list what the region and it's people do and have done for this country but suffice to say without Chittagong, Bangladesh would probably dissolve in the years following it's independence anyway.

Nowhere except Dhaka has any bits of infrastructure worth writing home about...

I'm travelling to Bangladesh in the coming month, I will update this thread, If I believe roads have gotten better since the last time I visited four years ago.

Also, things are improving now, government has alot of ongoing projects and high quality bitumen is being made in the country too, expect roads to get better in a decade or so.

Instead of throwing Mezban feasts, Chittaingas can build a road in his/her name everytime someone passes.

Do you mean people from Chittagong division or Chittagong district ?

If the latter, then I'm afraid you're misinformed, Chittagonians don't really go abroad for work, most life off family businesses or ancestral wealth..

The actual population of khati chatgaiyas is not large compared to overall population of Chittagong division..

The most hard working people in Bangladesh are undisputably Noakhaillas, God, the drive on those people... And this is coming from someone from Chittagong, which is saying something as both regions have a friendly rivalry.

Most well to Chittagonians throw their money at pirs from Pakistan... There is a particularly notorious one called Tayyab Shah from the city of Sialkot in Punjab Pakistan...

I can confidently say 50% of Chittagong proper are his followers... When he comes to Chittagong on the day of the prophets birthday he gets treated like a God, in Pakistan he's a nobody.

You would not believe the scenes of people throwing millions of taka his way, literally their entire fortunes being given away, you have to pay his cronies large sums to even get a sight of him.

When he comes the airport is kaputt for atleast 3 hours.

If I said all of this in public in Chittagong city and opposed him, I'd probably not live through the day, not even exaggerating... He claims to be of the prophets lineage.

Some people are ripping my people off in the name of religion.. it's honestly disgusting, you may think I'm crazy but the money they throw is big numbers, come to Chittagong and see for yourself.

This man's cult is so powerful within the city, he can probably get people to run riot, If he wanted to.

That’s the bad side of Sufism!!!

At least it’s a lot better than the bad side of Wahhabism!

Chittagong along with Sylhet are blessed. Mother nature has been kind.

Stop whinging boys!

Let other parts of Bangladesh develop!
