Islamabad: Pakistan's Senate chief has warned that constitutional checks to prevent yet another military takeover have become redundant in the country which has seen Army rule for nearly half of its 68 years of independence.

Raza Rabbani was winding up the debate in the upper house to commemorate the International Day of Democracy yesterday.

Opposition leaders had raised fears of increasing disconnect between the powerful military and the government.

In the past, the Army had toppled the civilian government four times to directly rule the country and the military interventions continued despite Article 6 of the 1973 Constitution which criminalises the abrogation of the constitution by declaring it as "high treason", which is punishable with death.

"I believe that Article 6 has become redundant. Our weaknesses have made it redundant. In my eyes, no constitutional clause can protect democracy," Rabbani said.

He said that only people of the country can stop the Army from seizing power.

"Only the people can protect democracy provided they are given ownership of the system," he observed adding that Pakistan could not afford another military intervention.

"No system other than democracy can keep the federation intact keeping in view the country's internal and external situation," he said.

The last military ruler Pervez Musharraf took over in 1999 but was forced to resign in 2008.

A case of high treason was filed against him in 2013 but due to pressure from the Army, it has been effectively abandoned though the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has refused to allow Musharraf to go abroad.

Personally I don't think that such a takeover is going to happen in the near future but for the sake of argument, lets just say that there is a Military takeover. The Army, General Raheel to be precise has hit new heights of popularity amongst the general public of Pakistan. If decides to takeover tonight, then he will have the general support but he won't because of the international pressure and consequences.

if its not a personal wish, then Army don't need to take over..
they are already taking actions and obliging govt departments (come out of political influence) to take actions..
so they are driving while insisting political setup to be at driving seat

I agree but I have a feeling that if the Rangers do a similar operation in Punjab like the one in Sindh, then we might run into some serious conflicts between the establishment and the Government. So far, everyone is feeling comfortable in their respected zones because the government is secure, but if the government starts to feel insecure then we might see some political unrest.

People say NS is smart and don't forget his opposition but remains silent and pretend harmless..
anyway he couldn't stop his ally falling victim of govt dpeartments like NAB, FIA etc which are in Islamabad control..
Plus dr shahid says, NS has though of sacrificing some of his ministers (not relatives). if its true, then in future he w'd lost his fellowship/support.. Like he spent/dispensed senator mushaid after some statement of taping phone calls of ISI cheif. so more minsters are to follow.

I think that the institutions should continue working like this and also that they should start taking the same actions across all provinces for the remainder of this government's tenure. This will ensure that by the time the next elections come, majority of trash had been taken out.

Very well said and I hope that we can setup military courts for corruption cases as well, then the army would never have to take over.
