Iraq greenlights gas pipeline deal with Iran, Syria

Hürriyet Daily News

Iraq on Feb. 19 gave the go-ahead for a framework agreement to be signed for the construction of pipelines through Iraqi territory that would deliver Iranian gas to Syria.

A cabinet statement said that Oil Minister Abdelkarim al-Luaybi had been instructed to sign the deal, by which Iranian natural gas could be delivered in the future to Europe as well.

In July last year, Iran, Iraq and Syria inked a memorandum of understanding for the gas pipelines, with Tehran saying that the total cost of the project would be about $10 billion.

The construction of pipelines stretching for several thousand kilometres (miles) "should take three to five years once funding is secured," Iran's deputy oil minister Javad Ouji said at the time.

Ouji said in July that the project calls for the construction of a 56-inch (142 centimetre) pipeline with a capacity of 110 million cubic metres a day, connecting southern Iranian port of Assalouyeh to Iraq and then to Syria, with the possibility of extending to Lebanon and Europe.

Iraq should initially receive about 20 million cubic metres a day for its power plants, and Syria between 20 and 25 million cubic metres a day, he said.

Iran has the second largest proven gas reserves in the world after Russia.

It currently consumes almost all of the approximately 600 million cubic metres (21.8 trillion cubic feet) per day of gas production, but hopes to double its output and export some 250 million cubic metres per day to its neighbours and to Europe from 2015 through developing a giant offshore gas field in the Gulf, which it shares with Qatar.

Hmm after Iran-Pakistan it is now Iran-Iraq-Syria.

I thinking we are looking forward to a new Persian rise and much more tensed middle east politics!

Iraq ans Afghanistan are controlled by US, and both circumvent US sanctions most.

They want to make a pipeline to Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and China too.
Of course safety is always an issue.

I am not talking about the Iran-Pakistan line but rather Iran-Iraq-Syria line which will not see the light, not jealous but being realistic.

I have read that Iraq wants to sell gas to Jordan through pipeline. Is that right?

The Iran-Pakistan Pipeline can in turn be extended to be Iran-Pakistan-China/India Pipeline should the need arise !

Maybe it would; the current Iraq Government is predominantly Shia & the polarization in their society is often talked about ! Maybe it is possible after all.

yes, that's right, the oil line will provide Jordan with all it's oil needs at lower prices and Iraq will be able to export oil through Jordan as it's a direct and closer to the Western markets, not to mention that Iraq don't have an enough space by the sea to export/import all of it's needs.

Iraq doesn't need gas or oil, it is just a rout to Syria, and I don't think such a project will be done.

I am aware of the oil pipeline. I meant a gas pipeline.

@ Somebozo
I think the same way:
"Allah ho Akbar chanting terrorist" will do their best from Afghanistan to Iraq.

Iraq has oil but extracts less gas even compared to Syria and Turkey.

Jordan already imports gas from Egypt. I am not aware if Iraq started exporting gas or not.

Iran will become an energy superpower in the future. they have have the worlds largest hydrocarbon reserves (oil+gas combined).
and they have a huge untapped reserves as well. Pakistan needs to be wise and ask Iran for more energy.
