Iraq asks U.N & Nuclear countries for help to build new nuclear power reactor

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Iraq asked on Saturday for assistance in building a nuclear power reactor for peaceful purposes, more than 25 years after the destruction of the reactors it had under Saddam Hussein.

“Iraq calls for assistance from our kindred nuclear countries to build a nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes ... in accordance with the non-proliferation treaty,” Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafar told the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Iraq had three nuclear reactors in Tuwaitha, its main nuclear research site, south of Baghdad. One was destroyed by an Israeli air raid, in 1981, and the two others by U.S. airplanes in the 1991 Gulf war which followed Iraq’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

True, but ISIS's own growth story makes the situation complicated. If they can come onto the scene from literally nothing, what's stopping another succesor group filling their role?

Iraq needs stability, so no other groups can emerge.. now it is working on it..

No of course not, but high risk projects like nuclear power plants can wait until the situation improves. Can you imagine the difficulty in fighting extremist groups utilising depleted Uranium rounds or armour?

There are plenty of other safer options they can use in the meantime like gas, geothermal, hydro, or solar. Its not like nuclear tech is a necessity.

How many years before a deal is signed with a country, how long before agreements are reached, planning is done, funds are released and construction starts. How long before it is operational?

No less than 5 years, rather say 10 years, this is long-term planning. You don't seem to get it.

Do you see Iraq being completely cleared of such groups within 5-10 years?

Why do you believe a nuclear plant is so important? like I said there are plenty of other higher capacity and easier to construct alternatives no one is saying development of the country needs to stop, but high risk projects should wait until the situation changes.

Infact, given that this is a long-term project I wouldn't worry about insurgents as they will be dealt with in due time. The threat will come from Israel once again, before having nuclear reactors there will be need for proper air defense, fighter jets and other security improvements.

All those alternative energy sources are not as efficient as Nuclear energy, also the Iraqi electricity grid was almost totally destroyed by the US coalition, so Iraq needs Nuclear energy to revive its industry to which a nuclear plant will give a new kick-start..

Such a site could be built inside a military base zone, not easy for terrorists to overrun a military base, they didn't even manage to do this in 2014. The major airbases, some besieged by IS with no US forces present such as COB Speicher (Tikrit airbase) remained free from IS. That's not the issue, the threat will be from Israelis as before.

Today's Iraq has no hostility with Usrael.. unlike Saddam's regime..but I agree that in any case, a strong air defence and airforce is necessary, not only because of the Nuclear plant, but as a state defense system..

Alright if security can be guaranteed, Iraq is asking the international community after all and even without the Israeli lobby I have my doubts on whether foreign companies could move forward on such a project.

Not really, They can sell their oil and gas and use Nuclear energy.. it is more efficient..take a look at all neighbours, they are all doing the same after thorough studies.. Iraq shouldn't be left behind..

Nuclear energy is very expensive to invest into, if the Iraqis feel that they can afford the costs as well as the necessary upgrades to security apparatus in order to satisfy foreign investors, then go for it.

I would have waited a few years to see if the situation improves, maybe use that money to rebuild destroyed infrastructure, but its up to them I suppose.
