Hassan Rowhani won landslide election in June, takes office on Sunday

Two days before his inauguration as Iran's new president, Hassan Rowhani said on Friday that Israeli occupation of Palestinian land had inflicted a "wound" on the Muslim world, according to a segment of his remarks broadcast on Iran's state-run Press TV.

An earlier report by Iran's student news agency ISNA had quoted Rowhani as saying: "The Zionist regime is a wound that has sat on the body of the Muslim world for years and needs to be removed."

That version echoed the fiercely anti-Israeli language of outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but was swiftly repudiated by Iranian state media, which said unidentified news agencies had distorted Rowhani's remarks.

Press TV then broadcast an excerpt from an exchange between Rowhani and journalists at a rally to mark Iran's annual Al Quds Day in support of the Palestinians. "After all, in our region there's been a wound for years on the body of the Muslim world under the shadow of the occupation of the holy land of Palestine and the beloved al-Quds [Jerusalem]," Rowhani said in the segment.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seized on ISNA's version of Rowhani's comments, saying they showed the reputedly moderate Iranian cleric was as hostile to Israel as Ahmadinejad, whose denial of the Holocaust and description of Israel as a "cancerous tumour" prompted international condemnation.
Moderate Rowhani offers better chance of diplomacy

The United States and its allies suspect Iran of seeking nuclear weapons capability. Tehran says its nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes, but Israel regards it as a threat to its existence and refuses to rule out military action.

With a more pragmatic president in Iran, Western countries may see a better chance for diplomacy to lead to a deal to curb Tehran's uranium enrichment program and avoid any conflict.

"The true face of Rowhani has been revealed sooner than expected. Even if they hurry to deny his words — this is what the man thinks and this is the Iranian regime's plan of action," Netanyahu said in a statement.

Rowhani's words "must awaken the world from the illusion in which part of it is placed since the Iranian elections," he declared, saying Iran still aimed "to acquire nuclear weapons in order to threaten Israel, the Middle East and world peace."

"A nation that threatens to destroy the state of Israel must not be allowed to have weapons of mass destruction," he said.

Ahmadinejad addressed Israel on Quds Day in his last speech as president. "You planted wind in our region and you will reap the storm. I swear to God that a ferocious storm is coming and it will uproot the Zionist entity," Iran's state news agency IRNA quoted him as saying.

There goes the moderism...

Esfand khan,he did not say Israel must be removed.you as a Persian speaking member should confirm my words?

BTW,when it comes to Israel, rohani has no business.its just up to leadership.however we cant say the same when it comes to US.

True, he does not say that Israel must be removed at any point, but he refers to it as a wound.

So,as a president of a country that doesn't recognize the whole israel, what do you suggest him to give speech in the Qods day?

He called the occupation of Palestine and Jerusalem a wound, not Israel. You can't really expect him to come and say how great Israel is!it has nothing to do with being a moderate.
You should read Netanyahu's response, that's what we call extremism.

Idiots who run ISNA are the wounds that MUST be removed from the face of the earth. It was completely intentional. They must be fired and thrown in jail for their idiocy and distorting the president-elect's image. They're the only "journalists" in Iran that actually deserve to be jailed.

When would this farce end? They call Occupation of Jerusalem a wound and they are the ones who throw salt on it. If what Iran does to help Palestine is out of love, then what is hate then? Palestine card doesn't work anymore.

No Iranian president should comment about Israel anymore.

He should've let Ahmedinejad do all the talking this year.

You guys need to understand that Israel is just waiting for Iran to make one little mistake and use this mistake to it's advantage.

Israeli officials were so upset that Rouhani got elected, they were hoping for a Ahmedinejad 2.0

Ahmedinejad was so helpful to Israeli cause, he made it easy for AIPAC and all the neocons to demonize Iran , pile on sanctions and shape public opinion about Iran.

The Title is very misleading. He said that Zionist regime is a wound not Israel.

Which frankly is quite true.

Persian language is poetic and very passionate , so whatever he says is bound to be mistranslated and misrepresented.

IMO this is a better message.

"I bet that sooner kindness will govern the Middle East"

Ironically, after being besieged by their Egyptian 'brothers' in the army in Gaza behind a closed border, they are all calling for better relations with Iran, again. They only turn to Iran in moments of need.

They fight Israel with Iranian weapons, we give them some military leverage over Israel, we send them money, foods, clothes and many other things and at the hand, someone like you who does nothing for Palestine except talking, bites our hand. I agree with you though, we should let Arab 'brothers' deal with Palestinians, the same way Jordan helped them in September of 1970 aka 'Black September', or the Egyptian brothers' way. They will love it.

Well, Black September thing was between lawless militias and Jordanian army, given that there were both Jordanian and Palestinians in the militias and the army. Period. You killed in your revolution in 1979 more than anybody else, so spare me from this crap. We are the most country that scarified for Palestine, fought Israel 6 wars and many battles, we received millions of Palestinian refugees and granted them all right just like Jordanians, Palestine is num 1 priority for Jordan. Unlike Iran, spreading death and blood all over the region in the name of Palestine. Iran will mind it's own business the easy or the hard way. We don't need crazy Mullahs to tell us what to do.
