I have been going by actions most of the time. If US was actually an Iranian ally, US would not have allowed iRanian quality of life/ per capita income remain this low. Iran has taken SERIOUS economic damage because of US so why would US do that to an ally? FInd me another US "ally"that is poor because of US actions.
