Massoud Ali-Mohammadi, a leading Iranian nuclear scientist, has been killed in a bomb blast in Tehran.

He was killed as he left for work when a booby-trapped motorbike exploded in the street outside his home in Qeytariyeh, one of the capital's northern suburbs.

State television blamed "Zionists and American agents". No specific motive was suggested for the attack, though it described Dr Ali-Mohammadi him as a "staunch supporter of the Islamic Revolution".

Windows in nearby buildings were shattered, and blood was left on the street. There was no word of other casualties.

Dr Ali-Mohammadi was a professor at Tehran University, teaching courses in nuclear energy and writing on quantum physics.

It was not immediately clear whether he was attached in any way to the country's controversial nuclear programme, which has brought it into conflict with the West.

A scientist attached to the programme, Shahram Amiri, a physicist for the Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation, went missing while performing a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia last year. The Iranian authorities say he was kidnapped by the Saudi authorities and handed over to the Americans, though this is denied by Riyadh.

Tuesday's attack in Tehran could have been the work of a number of terrorist organisations which have been active in Iran, though if there is a political motive Tehran is also likely to blame agents of the West, particularly the United States and Britain, the "Great and Little Satans".

On the other hand, Dr Ali-Mohammadi was an Iranian representative to a Middle East wide nuclear co-operation programme run under the auspices of the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency.

The IAEA is the forum through which UN Security Council members are putting their demands to Iran to hand over the enriched uranium at the centre of the nuclear row.

"Massoud Ali-Mohammadi was a professor in the nuclear field and there have so far been no arrests of those behind this incident," said Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi, Tehran's chief prosecutor.

. . . . .
You don't understand. He was killed and the Iranian authorities IMMEDIATELY blamed Americans and Zionists. If they knew that much, then they could have stopped the attack, or at least arrested the perpetrators immediately. Since they didn't do either of these things, one can only conclude that the mullahs are either complicit or lying.

Yes I agree, your'e right on all accounts.

The problem is, after years of passive aggression (the term is too soft methinks, for strict sanctions on Iran; whether justified or not is another matter; is not just passive aggressive but rather brazen) have led to the general populace and the leaders taking it for granted to always blame the J and Z words.

But lets just say, if there was a top level Iranian Nuclear scientist, who would in the whole world benefit the most from taking out that scientist?

1) Arabs? ...... NOPE

2) Europeans? ..... some interest but still NOT THE MOST

3) Americans? .... a great deal but still not the most

4) Israelis? .... Hell Yeah !!

and to make it more realistically practical, put 3) & 4) together and you get:

the perfect combination of parties interested!!

Well of course they blame the US and Israel because who else would try to sabotage their nuclear program?

They know their program is under threat but that doesn't mean they know where or when the saboteurs will strike, therefore while I'm sure they're doing all they can to protect their scientists and such there are simply no guarantees, MOSSAD after all is an enviably effective organization.

I hope India's own good for nothing secret service is paying attention. While I think military action against Iran is a bad idea, I envy/admire how proactive Israel is in dealing with matters of national security. India needs to adopt Israel's covert strategy and hunt down the terrorist bastards plotting attacks against the country.

So did US decided to go to war after 9/11 and so did indians during the bombay incident... you forgot to record you observation when iranians blamed Pakistan in last incident !!!!

You've forgotten the Green Revolution. It appears this scientist had nothing to do with Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program, however it seems he was "an outspoken supporter for Mir-Hossein Mousavi." link

This poor fellow's specialty appears to have been cosmological particle physics. link Do you think that's the sort to help build a nuclear weapon, or the sort who uses science as a process to liberate his mind and thus opposed the mullahs?
