Mysterious Ship In Iranian Shipyard Is Likely IRGC’s New Flagship

We believe that Iran's IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard) will unveil a new ship soon. The 64m (210 ft) long catamaran is much larger than the IRIS Shahid Nazeri, a related ship already in IRGC service. This raises the possibly that it may be a new flagship or command ship.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) ship IRIS Shahid Nazeri is unique across navies. It’s distinctive lines, being a large catamaran with an unusual superstructure, mark it out as one of the most recognizable warships afloat. But intelligence suggests that it is soon to be joined by another. And this one will be bigger, and possibly every bit as unusual.

Nothing has been revealed about the new ship. Thanks to high-resolution commercial satellite imagery we have been able to keep an eye on it however.

The new vessel is being built at the Shahid Mahallati Shipyard in Bushehr, Iran. This is the same yard that built the IRIS Shahid Nazeri, which fits as the two vessels have some similarities. both are large catamarans with narrow widely-spaced hulls. The superstructure sits above the two, mounted on several tall legs, almost like a pond skater. This ungainly appearance may all the same allow a shallow draft yet high superstructure and decent stability. It also conveys relatively high speeds, reportedly 28 knots for the IRIS Shahid Nazeri.

The widely spaced hulls also allows small boats to be driven under the ship, which may be useful in some tactical scenarios. One possibility is that the ships can act as command ships for Iran’s swarms of small boats. The relatively spacious interior, high vantage point and helipad all match this interpretation.

We can infer from the family connection to IRIS Shahid Nazeri that the new ship is also constructed from aluminum. It is significantly larger however, not just in overall dimensions but in volume. The superstructure extends much further aft than on the earlier boat. Although currently unconfirmed, we expect it to feature a helipad.

Armament is likely to be similar again with only cannons for self-defense. IRIS Shahid Nazeri has a Gatling gun (possibly a locally produced copy of a minigun) up front and two ubiquitous Dshk 12.7mm heavy machine guns. There does not appear to be space for a larger cannon on the new ship either.

So we are waiting for the new ship to be revealed to the public. Perhaps then we will get additional information and can start to fit it in to the IRGC’s ever-expanding naval line up.

The dimension of this ship corresponds to the Shahid Soleimani that has been talked about officially. That ship will be 65 meter long. It is equipped with air defence missiles.

Sina jan is probably right this is most likely the new "Soleimani Catamatan" or(less likely) it's sister "Abu Mehdi class", Admiral Tangsiri has declared their existance some time ago.

Soleimani is 65 meters long and is equipped with anti surface, anti air missiles and has a helipad.

"Soleimani" and "Abu mahdi" will be comparable to PLAN type-22 missile boats.

I would like to see one of the two new catamarans being a air defense "hub" for other IRGC fast boats which lack it.

3 x Kaman/AK-630
12x vertical launch containers with 3rd Khordad Taer-2 variant
1x multi-functional radar (air/surface search)
1x 3rd Khordad engagment radar

maybe 4 x Nasir AshM for self defense

In that way the vessel could protect a group of Nasr/Nasir equipped fast crafts by creating a protection umbrella and allow extended range anti-air engagement

Does catamaran have the stability to be able to launch Taer-2 missiles?

Seems I read somewhere on here Iran is having trouble with VLS cells and launch stability on a Mowj design.

same missile different names if you know what i mean, if defense ministry builds them then its Ghadir and Fateh, they could be more advance and with different names but basically they have same platforms
Most likely ghadirs

I thnk Yavar said that vls on Dena is cancelled altogether. The size of the ships might not allow for anything bigger than shorter range missiles until something heavier is available. They should use the new bigger ships as testing platforms for vls sayyad family...

Would be extremely interesting if they could distribute the hardware on multiple warships. If IRGC can pull of distributed force projection asstets, then I would say it is game over conventional navy.

I heard someone say in Iran that they are working on it. This individual had no more details than, ... AD for surface-to-surface attack boats is very important to IRGCN and IRINS as they remember vividly the sinking of original Sahand and 2 kaman class attack boats. If they had AD, it could have been very different.

Iran is working now on Bavar 373 version 2 (upgrade). They are confident but money is tight and projects keep shifting funds as there is internal fighting (some) for resource allocation, and some key engineers left the country and went to Germany.

It is more complex that it seems. The British had some problems with this for quite some time.

In 2017 there were rumors of a possible purchase of the South African DENEL VLS system, perhaps today with the end of the arms embargo ........., it could be an opportunity.

the naval VLS version also used by South Africa, Algeria and Finland.
However, on units already built you could opt with the VLS launcher like the one in the version of the photo posted above.

here a quick photoshop with Dena-75,
canister anti-ship missiles relocated as in the Jamaran-76
with the system in vertical position only when it is in alarm

Dude Denel is dead they couldnt even get the loans from banks to fulfill an order for Egypt of Umkhonto-IR so Egypt cancelled and bought MICA IR.

They've lost a signifcant amount of their engineers to UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other South African companies.

there should be no problem with funding because "Air Defence" was put under "National Importance/High priority"-projects

and some key engineers left the country and went to Germany.

where did you get this from, any source?

Iran is working now on Bavar 373 version 2 (upgrade).

2-3 years ago they said the upgraded version will be ready in 2 years, so if there was no delay this project should be completed already or nearly completed

They've lost a signifcant amount of their engineers to UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other South African companies.

lets hope Iran got some Denel engineers on board, knowledge is needed....

South Africa has applied to the United Nations Security Council for arms sell to Iran ( Umkhonto sea based surface-to-air missile system )

According to the report carried by mybroadband website on Saturday, South Africa has applied to the United Nations Security Council to sell missiles worth R1.5 billion ($118 million) to Iran.

and some key engineers left the country and went to Germany.
Could this be a problem in terms of further development?
More importantly, could this pose a threat to the system altogether? Certain people involved in sensitive things like this should not be allowed to leave the country. The internal security is a joke at times...
