In 1971, Iran purchased 202 of an improved AH-1J, named "AH-1J International", from the United States. This improved Cobra featured an uprated P&WC T400-WV-402 engine and stronger drivetrain. Recoil damping gear was fitted to the 20 mm M-197 gun turret, and the gunner was given a stabilized sight and even a stabilized chair

Iranian AH-1Js participated in the Iran–Iraq War—which saw the most intensive use of helicopters in any conventional war.

Iranian AH-1Js (particularly the TOW-capable ones) were "exceptionally effective" in anti-armor warfare, inflicting heavy losses on Iraqi armored and vehicle formations. In operations over the barren terrain in Khuzestan and later in southern Iraq, beside the standard tactics, Iranian pilots developed special, effective tactics Due to the post-Revolution weapons sanctions, Iranians had to make do with what was at hand .

they equipped the Cobras with AGM-65 Maverick and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles and used them with success against Iraqi targets such as osirak nuclear reactor

Starting from October 1980, the AH-1Js engaged in air-to-air combat with Iraqi Mil Mi-24 helicopters on several, separate occasions during the Iran–Iraq War. One document cited that Iranian AH-1Js took on Iraqi Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters.

Iranian AH-1 pilots achieved a 10:1 kill ratio over the Iraqi helicopter pilots during these engagements

There were even engagements between Iranian AH-1Js and Iraqi fixed-wing aircraft. The AH-1Js scored three confirmed kills against MiG-21s, claimed a Su-20, and shared in the destruction of a MiG-23—all using their 20 mm M197 cannon.

Ali Akbar Shiroodi and Ahmad Keshvari were two distinguished Iranian Cobra pilots during Iran-Iraq War and are considered wartime heroes in Iran.

Iranian AH-1Js are in service with the Islamic Republic of Iran Army Aviation and have undergone indigenous upgrade programs.

With the new found love between US and Iran is there any chance Iran is going for modern US military hardware? Cobra upgrades or replacement? anything that you guys can foresee?

Thanks for your insight.
Well what i meant was that with the deal that have been signed and how the issues have been resolved, things have surely improved and opened up new opportunities. I guess it will give access to western systems now.
So the actual question was that whether Iran have any plans to go for Cobra upgrades or replacements?

.
The Bell Helicopter AH1J was based on the Bell 309 King Cobra Developed to meet USMC needs of a twin engine attack helicopter where previously The AH1G,AH1Q, and later AH1S, AH1E and AH1F were based on the US Army wants and the original Bell 209 Cobra with a single Engine.
Ah1J Was one of the First Models to feature the M197 Three barrel 20mm Gatling cannon along side the AH1F single engine model Replacing the M28 turret system that was armed with a 7.62mm Minigun and 40mm Grenade launcher.
In the US AH1J would be superceeded by AH1T then AH1W The Farther improved AH1(4B)W and then the Current USMC AH1Z Viper.
The US Army however Would Replace it's Cobras with AH64 starting in the 1990's and the last leaving service in 2001.
Twin engine Cobras remain in service for Iran, Turkey, the USMC, and Taiwan.
Single Engine Cobras for Japan, Turkey,Jordan, South Korea, Pakistan, Thailand and Bahrain.
The Iranians Father Cloned the Super Cobra in the form of the IAIO Toufan and Toufan II

no , nothing has changed , back then there was a question in Iran :"we are sanctioned for probability of building nuke . now that we are sanctioned then why we shouldn't build nukes and secure ourselves from military aggression !? " , west hear the voice through their channel and make this deal .... but this deal has nothing for us , westerns stab our heart with their Iraninan western wannabe and worshipers ....

there is no such thing as eternity. and that's not any good , its consumer good , other ways you also must ban any CPU or GPU import. i fact its not even ban on consumer goods otherwise you must have say byebye to shiny apple junks that you see everywhere

But there are many used ones which IRAN and Turkey can buy.
if you are not aware we bought all our equipment from USA customized not even USA built a new class of warships for us something they never did for anybody else . So why you think we are interested with anything second hand, Specially something we are able to produce locally and we get a complete assembly line for it more than 35 years ago?
