Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan railway to open next month

Pointing to the opening of Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan railway, Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi announced reviewing international tariffs and discount for transit due to creating a competitive advantage in the transit corridor.

“In line with the development of Iran’s international cooperation with the world and neighboring countries, this railway plays an important role in trade and transportation development,” said Abbas Akhoundi at a press conference, adding that the bulk of transit takes place between China and the West which is more than 350 million tons per year.

Regarding the mechanisms of competitive advantage for the prosperity of this corridor, Minister of Roads and Urban Development said that trilateral negotiations were underway to reduce tariff rates.

Announcing that the negotiations will soon wrap up, he expressed hope by reducing tariffs, the corridor would greatly flourish.

Akhoundi expressed hope that in addition to transportation and development of trade, the project would have a positive effect on peace and would increase cooperation between nations.

The railway is of 920 kilometers length, 85 kilometers of which pass through Iran, 700 kilometers through Turkmenistan and 140 kilometers through Kazakhstan.
