TEHRAN, Jan. 12 (MNA) – AEOI deputy head has announced Iran’s plan to sell heavy water surplus to the US through a third-party intermediary.
Deputy Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Asghar Zare'an stated that 6 tons of Iran’s exported heavy water will be used by atomic centers and the rest by US scientific institutions; “in view of AEOI’s commercialization strategy in production, a recent survey in US’s Savannah Laboratory on Iran’s heavy water has confirmed a 99.75 per cent purity of the Iranian product."
"The issue is a manifestation of the compliance with standard and quality of Iran’s nuclear industry,” he added. Zare'an stressed that the export of enriched UF6 which took place in December 27, 2015 was followed by standard and quality assurance of the Russian side which provided a strong proof validity of Iran’s nuclear activities as well as the high quality of the country’s nuclear industry.
“The recent measures have put Iran in the group of countries capable of producing strategic nuclear materials including UF6 and heavy water,” continued the official. AEOI deputy head further noted that “Iran produces a total of 20 tons of heavy water per year the surplus of which is exported to foreign customers.” “Iran has become an official member of a consortium established in western countries in the area of nuclear activities which marks a great national achievement.
“A cooperation agreement will be officially signed by Iran and China by the end of next week aiming to construct a reactor with various options including Fordow,” he told reporters. “No further physical action with regard to Arak’s 40-megawatt reactor will be taken before the finalization of the contract.”
Zare’an also touched upon the issue of JCPOA implementation; “all sanctions imposed due to Iran’s nuclear activities will be terminated and EU countries will announce the implementing regulations for economic and financial conditions on the first day of the implementation and the Islamic Republic of Iran would remain fully committed to its obligations.”
