Iran seizes oil tanker in Gulf



Iran has seized a foreign tanker it says was smuggling fuel in the Gulf.

The vessel, which state TV claimed was smuggling fuel to foreign customers, was intercepted south of Iran's Larak Island in the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Sunday and its 12 crew members arrested.

The report did not identify the tanker or say which country the crew were from. An oil tanker based in the United Arab Emirates traveling through the Strait of Hormuz drifted off into Iranian waters and stopped transmitting its location over two days ago.

US officials have expressed suspicion that the Panamanian-flagged oil tanker Riah had been seized in Iranian territorial waters.

Iran said it responded to a distress call from the Riah, based in the UAE, and came to its rescue. But no other nation has reported receiving a distress call from the Riah, which was seen being escorted by Iranian naval vessels after the transponder that automatically reports its location was switched off on Saturday.

The tracking report of the Panamanian ship MT Riah from MarineTraffic.com showed the vessel began its journey near a port off the coast of Dubai in the UAE on July 5.

It was then tracked near the coast of Ras al-Khaimah before changing course and travelling north towards Iranian waters, after which it stopped transmitting its signal on Sunday at about 4.30am local time.

This just got out 3 minutes ago , it has been in the back of the headlines for more than 24 hours but only now the Iranians officially came out with the announcement that they seized the ship.

Yesterday they said that they aided a ship that signaled a distress call.

This just got out 3 minutes ago , it has been in the back of the headlines for more than 24 hours but only now the Iranians officially came out with the announcement that they seized the ship.

Yesterday they said that they aided a ship that signaled a distress call.

Two different ship,this one only can carry 1,000,000 liter of oil or around 7000 barrel of oil. These are ships that buy oil from smugglers and then sell it to other neighbouring countries.

it's not the first time we arrested such smugglers now if they want to go to war with iran to protect their smuggler scums then they are welcome after all body bag industry also need to make some business .

What do you mean smuggling ? from where to where ?

First they Said it was answering a distress call ( though no other ship heard such a call ) Now they say they arrested that ship for smuggling. Sounds more like a premeditated action to me.

Two different incident and from iran to neighboring countries that don't have oil and buy it at much higher price these ships stay away from shore and then send oil in small fast boat to them .

One ship does not mean " imminent attack " i remind you the Iranians held British and American ships and freed them in the end.

Another thing to look at is that after china , UAE is the country that exports most of the stuff to Iran ( about 14% of Iran's imports last year came from UAE ) , does Iran really want to make the relations with them worse ?
